Hey, can someone recommend me some really looooog books?
...or trilogies, series, anything that will keep you occupied for a little while?
we are going on two weeks of vacation next month and even though i´m sure we´ll do quite some sightseeing we´ll also have a few days lazy beach days and there´ll be a long flight, too.
if the book comes in a kindle version that would be extra-super because i´m already schlepping 20 pounds of camera equipment !
i think bali demands something lighter than proust
how about 2666? I haven't read it precisely because it is so big. It sits on my shelf and mocks me. might be a little heavy for a beach holiday though.
what kind of genres do you like to read? if you like sci-fi/fantasy stuff you could check out Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun series, that's 4 books total if I remember correctly. Or perhaps Samuel Delaney's Dhalgren, if you like post-apocalyptic stuff, that one is pretty long.
I read Shogun over my last vacation. It's about the first English pilot to make it to Japan. I thought it used its length perfectly. You're gonna feel like you're stranded in feudal Japan... but... in a good way.
Anyway, I liked it because it was super engaging. 1,152 pages and not one of them dull.
Jess, take this. I haven't read Shogun.
Maybe you should start the Game of Thrones series, Barbara.
Maybe you should start the Game of Thrones series, Barbara.
This was going to be my suggestion.
Derek will disagree but Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell kept me pretty engrossed and it's about 1000 words.
Shōgun is better than Game Of Thrones.
I was going to suggest Moby Dick.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I really loved Foreign Fruit by Jojo Moyes but there is no kindle version.

I wanna read this now.
i´ve read game of thrones and i liked jonathan strange and mr. norrell, too.
shogun does sound good, especially because i´m sure ludwig would like it.
i´m not overly into sci-fi but fantasy i can get into every now and then.
Now i want to read Shogun too.
I try to get everyone to read Shogun.

I liked Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude a lot.
Les Misérables.
The Silmarillion + Unfinished Tales
James Ellroy's Underworld USA Trilogy
The complete Sherlock Holmes

That tickled me too.
I read the Stand and that took a decent amount of time?
Jonathan strange I couldnt really get into.
As for an epic journey I cant say I am a huge kind fan but The Dark Tower kept me going and still does.
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
The Silmarillion + Unfinished Tales
James Ellroy's Underworld USA Trilogy
The complete Sherlock Holmes
hey, how about some suggestions that don´t jump at me every time i walk by our book shelves
The Twilight saga, Liebling ?

hmpf. very funny, mister !
I laughed.
When you pick one, you should let us know who won. I mean... what you decided to go with...
The Silmarillion is a tough read. And The Children of Hurin is the last book I can remember not being able to finish reading. These are not like The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Reading them, I felt like I was reading the Bible. But they were never meant to be seen in that form--they are just notes.
i bought shogun already !
might still need another one though, i´m a fast reader.
The Silmarillion is a tough read.
If by "tough" you mean "unreadable", then you are correct.
This is why we can't have nice things.

Maybe... I went through it fast because like I said, it ain't boring. I'm so excited though! I hope you like it!
Have you read Vanity Fair? I got it last Christmas and still haven't started it. The thickness (or weight) discourages me though, I would've probably read it if I had it on my Kindle.
I enjoyed Vanity Fair when I read it, but that was about 12 years ago.
If you're into that sort of thing, it's pretty good.
Well that's a really looooong book. Not what everyone else suggested. And Silmarillion is not unreadable. It did take me six months to read it, but I finished it. Some day I'll read and re-read everything by Tolkien, but I don't think that day is very soon.
Also, here are some log books, as the title suggests:

Ha. I didn't even notice that.

Plam sounds like a sound effect for an old episode of batman.
*Plam*

It is a tough read, but I found two very valuable tools :
- the proper maps (I recommend The Atlas of Middle Earth, by Karen Wynn-Fonstad)
- When you organise the stories chronologically they make much more sense and are in my opinion much more epic and beautiful, including The Hobbit and LoTR. This site does it for you :

Apparently, this is a Loog.

Now I want one.

oh the shame.

A la recherche du temps perdu. I read it on the kindle earlier this year.
I am actually dying to see the pictures. I think Bali is wonderful.
