There's something about scary japanese men covered in flower tatoos who cut off their own fingers that just gets me. Of course, I would never tell that to my counselor. Would anyone like to recomend me some steller yakuza reads?

Without a doubt, Confessions of a Yakuza by Junichi Saga. It's technically true crime, not fiction - the author was a doctor, and he recorded hundreds of hours of stories an elderly Yakuza patient recounted to him. The book isn't stylized Yakuza as shown in the movies, but it's a damn good read.

Also - Yakuza: Japan's Criminal Underworld by Kaplan and Dubro. I haven't read it yet so I can't vouch for it, but it came highly recommended. It's up next in my non-fiction pile.

If you're in the mood to rent some good stuff, check out Seijun Suzuki's Tokyo Drifter and Branded to Kill. Oldies but goodies. He also did the more recent Pistol Opera, but I haven't had the chance to check that out yet (but am very much looking forward to doing so). Also Takeshi 'Beat' Kitano's Sonatine springs to mind.
