Happy New Year. What are you reading before the world ends? January Book Thread.
Started God Is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens.
"A celibate clergy is an especially good idea, because it tends to suppress any hereditary propensity toward fanaticism." -Carl Sagan
"Am I cruel? Probably. Is she an idiot? Yes." -jane s.
Damned by Chuck Palahniuk. I'll comment on it in the Damned section of the forum when finished.
Just finished Neuromancer. Wonderful. Exciting and super interesting.
Starting The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
The Dispatcher by Ryan David Jahn. Meh. I was expecting great things from this but I'm finding it lacking. It's nowhere near as good as his book Bad Neighbours.
Derek, I'm recommending By The Time We Leave Here, We'll Be Friends by J. David Osborne. I told you I'd try and throw some recommendations your way. I'm reading this right now and I'll be finishing it today. I loved it.
I've just started reading Zero History by William Gibson and also The Westside Barbell Book of Methods by Louie Simmons while I design my new training program.
I Read the Thunderdome book, In Search of a City. LA in a thousand words. Putting aside the fact that I'm friends with Monkey Mike it's a fucking awesome collection. My favourite story was called Subtitles for a Silent Film by Nik Houser.
I want that book sooo bad.
Just finished The Fault In Our Stars by John Green.
Fantastic and moving and sad. A fair number of quotes in there that really resonated with me/ made me laugh. I'll post them in the favorite passages thread.
I'm finishing off 11.22.63 by Stephen King. I keep stalling on reading it since it's so good.
I've been listening to the audio book of that.
I started Into The Darkest Corner by a new writer called Elizabeth Haynes. It's great so far. I can see myself getting lost in it for a few days.
Nemesis by Philip Roth.
Half way through Farenheit 451
What do you think?
That book is great.
That book is great.
Goddamn right it is. Shit. It's sooooo good.
I don't want to start The Devil All The Time yet, mostly because I'm in a weird mood.
So, I'm trying to decide what to read between these (because they are on my nook):
- Sorry I Ruined Your Orgy by Bradley Sands
- Siren Promised by Jeremy Robert Johnson
- or one of the Bizarro Starter Kits
Help a brother out!
Nobody wants to help me?
If those don't please you, recommend something weird to me.
The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock.
If those don't please you, recommend something weird to me.
Did you read the new Criminals yet?
Yeah
And...?
It was awesome. The most personal story in the series I think.
I'll have to format you a copy.
I'll have to format you a copy.
Yes, please.
Working on The Virgin Suicides at Steve's suggestion. It's quite good so far.
Rereading Snømannen (by Jo Nesbø), because Scorcese is gonna make a movie of it.
Gosh, my Mum's obsessed by her books! She'll be so excited to hear they're making a film of that.
I'm still on Part 3 of 1q84.
I'll be finishing up Sorry I Ruined Your Orgy today. Soon. It was pretty entertaining. A few of the stories were awesome. But most of them were just light and funny. Good read!
I think I'm going to start Sirens Promised by Jeremy Robert Johnson after that.
I'm still on Part 3 of 1q84.
It's a man.
Ha! really? I wonder if my Mum knows! (She'll probably be disappointed!)
Maybe she'll fancy him!

I'm trying to finish off a pile of books I started last Summer. I'm halfway through Them Or Us by David Moody and it's picked up a lot or maybe I'm not as restless now.
Hi Derek
Hi Hattie!!!!
Siren Promised was fucking great. I nice little novella that I found randomly by browsing Jeremy Robert Johnson's site. Highly recommended.
Starting The Devil All The Time now.
Finished Nemesis. I'm halfway through the first volume of Proust and on to the fourth in Arabian Nights.
Everyman by Philip Roth.
I'm finally reading Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. It's been on my shelf for a few years and now I'm reading it I can't believe I didn't read it as soon as I bought it. It's really good, I wanted something rich with character like this is.
That being said, Fante by Dan Fante arrived today and I don't know if I can wait to read it!
I'm 100 pages into Drak Horizons by Dan Smith. It's ticking along nicely but I could do with a Holy Shit moment soon.
Ternura by Gabriela Mistral. Very short book of Spanish poems.
The Devil All the Time was very good. It made me feel funny inside.
Now reading Rico Slade Will Fucking Kill You by Bradley Sands.
The Punk by Gideon Sams yesterday.
Going to read A Light To Starve By by Axel Taiari today.
I have tome to start By The Nails of the Warpiest (Nik Korpon) before As a Machine and Parts (Caleb Ross) arrives on my doorstep.
This is why we can't have nice things.
The Four-Chambered Heart by Anais Nin.
Damned.
Hope springs eternal.
This is why we can't have nice things.
The End of Alice by A. M. Homes. Not as disturbing as I'd been told. So far anyway.
I started reading that a couple times. Everybody always tells me I will love it. I can never get into it though.
The Revelations by Alex Preston. Not bad, not great so far.
The Big Nowhere (James Ellroy)

I know you've read that one before!

Black Jesus by Felice Simone. Short enjoyable book that I'm trapping digging.
