Fantasy Fiction?
Does anyone read Fantasy fiction?
Everytime I go to the bookstore I think I will try some of that but never do. Apart from Lord of the Rings what should I try out. I want easy reading stuff to begin with.
Is Game of Thrones a good place to start or Robert Jordan?
Is Neil Gaiman Fantasty Fiction? I like him a lot!
Oh shit. How could I have forgotten him? American Gods was amazing.
I was gonna say Neil Gaiman but yeah too late.
Currently reading this, first fantasy I've read since Lord of the Rings in high school. I'm loving the hell out of it.
So far it's a little like taking The Tudors, added some The Wire and then sprinkled awesome-dust all over it with a sword.
I'm sticking to that.
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
Gaiman's Neverwhere was decent. Smoke and Mirrors is a great short story collection.Or Pratchett if you want satire mixed in
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy

I will aslo vouch for the series. The best I've read. Plus, you'll be able to see if HBO does it justice or gets it wrong!
A Game of Thrones is the fist book.
Definitely Gaiman - if you liked American Gods I would suggest you try Anansi Boys next, they have similar themes.
Russell Hoban - The Medusa Frequency.
Great little book, if you can locate a copy, I'm not sure if it's in print right now. Hoban has a lot of good stuff, Riddley Walker is also great but it's really more of a post-apocalyptic fiction than fantasy.
If you like your fantasy with a little sci-fi added in, you can't go past Gene Wolfe's Book of The New Sun series. Epic.
Also Dan Simmon's Ilium.
This is the second place I've seen this series highly recommend today alone. Gonna have to check it out.

If you like your sci/fantasy on the heavier side, I can't reccomend it enough. The series is really involving, if occasionally heavy-going (in the good way). The world he created is incredible and all-encompassing in its detail. I haven't read the follow up 'Urth of the New Sun' series, but it's supposed to be good as well.
For some Wolfe that's a little less of a commitment than 4 books, The Fifth Head of Cerberus is also a pretty good read.
No Kindle version, so looks like I won't be reading it just yet. Clicked the "notify publisher you want a kindle version" link and added it to my wishlist. Oh well. Good thing I have a huge list of other shit I want to read.
I'm not into Tolkien or Dungeons and Dragons-esque books, but I really like Jonathon Carrol's novels, China Mieville's Perdido Street Station and The Scar. And Jeff VanderMeer's City of Saints and Madmen and Shriek: An Afterword. Also, Steve Aylett's Accomplice series.
Book of Lost Things, but i'm sure you read that, derek.
I'd recommend Roger Zelazny's Amber novels.

Read A Song of Ice and Fire, the whole series. That was about the second fantasy series I've ever read. And loved it.
