Earth-shatteringly, groin-churningly depressing books!
I'm on a "serious literature" binge at the moment, and looking for the most depressing novel in the world. The latest "sad novel" I've read is Philip Roth's American Pastoral, which isn't just sad but also fundamentally angry. It was beautiful.
What's the most depressing book you've read, and would you recommend it?
