Dostoevsky and Literary Criticism
I was surprised to find that in London's biggest bookstore, there were only two books on the life and/or works of Dostoevsky. I can't order from Amazon because I have no fixed home right now. Does anyone living in London know where I can find a store with a large section on literary criticism?
If I don't get a response, I will have an epileptic fit.

I know it's beside the point but: http://community.middlebury.edu/~beyer/courses/previous/ru351/odost.shtml
Edit: Wrong link. If shops have online catalogues use those titles for reference, if you want.

Have you tried any little independent or second hand book stores?
I'm planning on doing so. There's plenty of those around.

That could indeed come in handy. I didn't know JM Coetzee had written about Dostoevsky.

Foyles on Charing Cross Road is usually a good bet for that kind of thing. I assume you're talking about the Waterstones in Piccadilly?

Nope, I was talking about Foyles. Waterstones in Piccadilly also only had two titles.

In that case, try Blackwells on Charing X Rd. That's usually got more academic type books.
That Waterstones is the biggest in Europe...so the much better Foyles sadly lost its crown as London's largest. The jazz cafe upstairs is brilliant.

Will do.

Are you looking for general criticism or specific critiques, like essays on certain books or applications of an “ism”? I might be able to find you some literary journals, if they’re in full form on a college’s database, but you’d need to be more specific.
I don’t know if you have Bedford/St. Martin's editions over there, but they have Case Studies in Contemporary Criticism Series for classic books that is quite good. I’d recommend those if you can find them.
Well, I'm mostly interested in finding literature on authors as subjects, rather than on specific isms and their various applications. For instance, though I enjoy browsing through post-Marxist, postmodernist, deconstructivist, third-wave-feminist, whateverist literary journals from time to time, what I'm looking for here is a wide range of studies on the oeuvre of specific authors. Those studies can be post-Marxist post-etc, I don't mind. All I really seek is a large selection of books on specific major writers. It's incredibly easy to find that stuff in Paris --- walk into any independent academic bookshop and you'll find at the very least ten titles on Lacan --- but London's proving to be rather tougher.

Yeah that's called a biography! And if you're traveling why are you reading criticism or biographies? You'll have plenty of time for that at the McLean asylum, so snatch up summaries and keep your head cocked. And if you're just out for a walk, all that junk prior is crossed out. You know French? I'd rather have sex with a twig than read a biography on Lacan. Paris gave me a bitch of a time. London was OK, the English understand American, a wee bit, ask Riddle there.
Have you tried Blackwell's yet, you Francophile ism jism?
If not - do. If you have - and nothing came of it - head over to Skoobs in the Brunswick Centre (not too far from Russel Square tube, so easily walkable from Charing X Rd). I haven't actually been there myself, but I know that it's got a good chunk of second hand stuff and tends to specialise in academia, including literary maguffins. While you're there you can pop in to the University of London Waterstones, which is near their main union building on Gower St. I'm not sure, but I think there might also be an academic bookstore somewhere in that main building. There's also lots of lovely students, but that's another type of studying altogether.
Nobody wants to read a biography on Lacan.

Update: I gave up and simply ordered the books online. They'll be sent to my family's house, and I'll only get to see them in four or five months.
I'll see you at McLean's.

Well, Blackwell's was just as unsatisfactory.
