Dostoevsky
I have read Notes from the Underground and really loved it. I know his most widely known works are Brothers Karamozov and Crime and Punishment. Which of any of his works do you guys reccomend. Feel free to discuss anything Dostoevsky!
Nice avatar by the way. "Nobody fucks with the jesus".

The Gambler and The Double were both incredible
I've been slowly building my way up before trying to tackle one of his behemoth sized books
Dream of a Ridiculous Man i s probably one of my favorite short stories of all time
I think next I'm going to go after The Idiot also
I've had the Brothers Kalamazoo sitting on my shelf for a while, too.
I had been reading all these crime novels and when I tried to pick that one up, it was too much of a jolt so I decided to catch up on my W C Baer. I'll have to just buckle down and read this one sooner or later.

Haven't read B Karamazov, but I have read Gambler, Notes, and Crime and Punishment. Crime and Punishment was by far my favorite. It's one of those few novels I actually remember the name of the main character--Raskonikov. Also, it's not slow paced like some older novels.
i loved crime and punishment...i have brothers karamazov and the idiot but i haven't gotten to them yet
I’ve been slowly moving through the Idiot. It’s bleeding hilarious. What drives me batshit is that there are fifteen to twenty characters and each has four to five different names. I made a legend. But yeah, I suggest the idiot, just be prepared to make a family tree.
i am really looking forward to jumping into Brother Karamazov
but mostly because of the Lost connection

The Idiot lost me, too much fainting. I related to the name thing though, it's a Slavic thing. My name goes to "Miratchka" as an endearment and "Mirena" as an expletive or in exasperation.*
My favorite's are Notes and Crime and Punishment. Brother's Karamazov was a bit of a chore for me to get through, but worth it, just like most chores..
*Edit: My sister's name is even better: Martushka or Matsena! (Based on Marta)

can we affectionately refer to you as "Miratchka Malorkus?"

Nope, I don't make trippy polls.

I've heard similar things about BK. It's funny cause that's not the case at all with the handful I've read.
The whole story behind him writing The Gambler to paying off his own gambling debts is absolutely great and sad at the same time
the brothers is a really really long and slow read, but it's more than worth it. everything you will ever need to know is in that book.
the brothers is a really really long and slow read, but it's more than worth it. everything you will ever need to know is in that book.
ive heard that about crime and punishment too
a sort of all encompassing story of the human condition
Nice avatar by the way. "Nobody fucks with the jesus".
Haha, thank you. "Let me tell you something, pendejo. You pull any of your crazy shit with us, you flash a piece out on the lanes, I'll take it away from you, stick it up your ass and pull the fucking trigger 'til it goes "click." Priceless....
OK, returning from my tangent: Yes, I guess i will just have to finish his book of short stories which I have and then just go ahead and start one of either Karamazov, Idiot, or Crime and Punishment. What is summer for, anyway?

I have a couple of friends who tried to read it and couldn't finish it, but they said it seemed that was the case with BK.
Does anyone identify with Notes?
umm....yes?
anyways, theres a thread somewheres talking about the similarities between the Notes narrator and Tyler Durden and whatnot, might be worth digging up
someone guess which dostoievsky's book i loved the most!
Crime and Punishment.
(Okay, fine, I googled it...)

I'm currently reading "Notes from Underground." as well. It is great. I've read "Crime and Punishment." and enjoyed it immensely. Didn't finish "the idiot." when I read it. That was more difficult to get through.
Underground is amazing though. I like it better when Dostoevsky writes in the first person. I wish he would write more like that. I have his other short stories, can't wait to read them.
I'm reading Notes From the Underground right now.
Notes from the underground is an amazing book, so intense and well writen. it's my favorite book of all time, and dosto was a freakin good writer : in his books, YOU are the main caracter.

YES, YES, I like your outlook, my friend! Such enthusiasm and conviction and SHEER BEATITUDE. This is what we need around here, goddamnet! har har Haw, hopefully tonight Dostoevsky will visit me in a dream and we will play a scintillating match of 20 questions!
someone guess which dostoievsky's book i loved the most!
lol

why the fuck is everyone laughing at me?!:grumble:
because you spelt "dostoievsky" wrongly
oh, well in french it spells(?) in a different way
holy fuck i'm tired and it's making me stupid so goodnight! damnit
its spelled "palahniuk"
its cool everyone pronounces it wrong also
So, I'm having extreme thoughts about naming my future first son "Dostoevsky". It has a nice ring to it, wouldn't you say?
mine's probably gonna be "oyster"

And what is the source of inspiration for this fishy name?

D is a last name
go with Fyodor !
And what is the source of inspiration for this fishy name?
Lullabye perhaps?
That quirky little fucker, so smart but so misguided. would make an interesting son. but im partially drunk and would probably be of a different opinion tomorrow

just don't name him Tupac
D is a last name

Aha! It is actually quite funny that you say this, as my last name begins with a D. I'm not sure in the slightest as to how you knew this--you must be the modern-day Jesus Christ! That is the only resonable answer
Fyodor is also a strong contendor; it depends on whether I want my kid to sound totally Russian or not. Maybe I shall settle on "Pinochet" It's wise yet humble....yaaasss
just don't name him Tupac
no, no. no worries there. that's to be the daughter's name

I liked the Idiot, but it has been a long, long, long time since I read it.
I have the Brothers K on my shelf ready to go one of these days, but shorter, less daunting books keep getting in the way. I have heard its the one to read though by numerous people who are better read than I am.
