Do you people have lives or jobs or something?
Man no offence by the title.
I thought I read alot, but checking out some of these forums I'm surprised to see how much reading alot of you do. So, just wondering how many books you have read in the last month? couple months? year etc. I feel like I'm behind and don't get as many books done as I'd like. I'd love to be able to consider myself well-read but to be honest compared to alot of you folks around here I'm a total noob! :wtf1: Damn I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!
not many actually like 5-8 books in the past 2 or 3 months. and i do have a life....
actually i havent even been posting here all that long.
I'm serious- I probably don't have a life. But what the hell constitutes as a life? Partying all the time? Because if that's life I'd be dumb as a rock from drinking, and about to go on a shooting spree after all these annoying ass people.
I have a semblance of a life, and I've read maybe four books in the past month.

I do my reading on the train. I have an hour commute to and from work, so thats a solid two hours of reading a day. I guess I've been averaging about three and a half books a month.

You'd be surprised how much you can get done if you don't waste time. But my social life extends as far as, "Sorry mate, my last one." and "Nah, I'm desperate." to the questions, "Got a cigarette?" and "Go twos then?" Fucking cheap cunts. I do share with the homeless though, because they live outside. They deserve a break now-and-again. So no, I don't have a life or a job or something. Oh actually, I will have a job next week.
The title of this thread annoys me, whether it was meant in offense or not.

Wouldn't it be worth investing in your social life a little bit? People may be cunts, but they will distract you when you're miserable.

I usually do my reading or writing in spanish class.

Thanks for all the replies, 3 books a month sounds reasonable. Just wondering because sometimes I go to book forums (not only the cult) and people post that they are going to checkout a book, then a few days later they reply on the same thread that they finished it, it's things like that, they make me say "shit, how do they find the time?" I'm not trying to bash anybody but it's just really weird. I mean check this link out: http://www.stephenking.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=117;t=3270
I thought, "this chick reads 2 books in 3 days? damn that's crazy..."
I read for about an hour every night before bed, which means I can get polished off about one book a week. But right now I'm unemployed and I don't have a TV, so I'm sure I'm going to start reading like mad. Last time I didn't have a job, I reread the entire Harry Potter series in 2 days.
There is hope, but not for us.

It's really not that crazy. I average 3 and a half books a month, but I've certainly read books in a day without sacrificing social time. I read each of Chuck's books in a day, except Haunted. If it's a good book and it's not too long, you can read the whole thing - say on a Saturday when you don't have work or school - and still have time to go out at night.
you'd be surprised how much reading you can get in if you don't watch Dancin' With the Stars
I don't have a social life during the day - I do some work from home and I don't have cable or turn the TV on unless something really great comes from Netflix.
However, I do have a family that is here in the afternoons, evenings, and weekends - I read a few books a month.
Good coffee is like drinking Rock and Roll.
I have college and I see my boyfriend nearly every day but I read as soon as I wake up, which is usually six, to when I need to get ready for college, around 8. The times between homework and seeing my guy, before bed, when I can't sleep, when I'm on the bus on the way somewhere. I manage about 2 books a month at the least...and play a lot of videogames and watch at least two movies a week aswell.
Don't you have anything that isn't a job or social life?!?! I'm baffled by how little free time you must have 'n' stuff...
I work about 50-60 hours a week. I help out in my familys sweetshop and also help my brother with his vending business. In my spare time I read lots and watch plenty of soccer and of course the Cult.
I read about 3 books a week depending on hw good they are I can fly through them.
I made the decision to stop watching the stupid tube and start getting up at 4:00 to write. So I get up at 4:00, write for 3 hours (on the days I can stay off the web). Work my day job until 5:00 then read from 6:00 until 9:30, then bed. I also read on the way to and from work (traffic) and during my breaks. I read 2-3 good sized books a week, more if it rains, less if I'm writing alot. It's all in what you want. I don't go to bars, or party but I average reading 100 pages a day and usually write 2000 words a day. I'd rather be somewhat smart and published than stupid and drunk...
Yeah, I'm a dork.

I read to replace TV. Probably totaling 4, 5 hours a week. Usually during commutes, but I am just a fast reader. Sometimes it's not even that the word junkies you meet on forums have no lives, its that they read fast. I've caught myself scanning words up and down across about four lines instead of side to side. Read Rant in 3, 4 hours.
The guy who just posted before me has the exact opposite life from mine. Life like a vending machine, with three buttons for work, read and write. Living your life drunk is not wrecking your life, where do people get these ideas?
i mean the guy who posted before before me.
I read when I am on the can... As far as a life goes I stay inside mostly and WoW out during the week and party on the weekends.

Your routine scares me. I think you need a beer! or something..
I work mostly 5pm-10:30pm most days of the week so my days consist of sitting around and waiting to go to work (nobody's online, my friends have jobs too and they work mostly days), so I don't get out much. Usually only Sundays/Mondays, then it's straight work for the rest of the week.
Sometimes I read a lot (for ME), like when I read 5 books between Dec. 25-Jan 25 which is the best I've ever done, but then it took me like 3 months to read 3 books. Just depends on my mood and how long the books are.
But I've only been reading seriously since I got out of school almost 4 years ago so I haven't read much, still trying to catch up.
Will post for food.

so true.
I have a life, friends, and work three jobs, usally read a book a week, but I dont watch TV, so there's always a trade off. And I hardly ever post on the cult, which makes me kinda sad...except that I get to come out of my groundhog hole for a couple weeks right near meetup time. YAY!!
sexist egotistical lying hypocritical bigot
I haven't read a book since I read two over the 2 week winter break. And before that -- not since August.
Organic Chemistry and Molecular Toxicology (coupled with Thur.-Sat. nights of drunkenness) takes over lives.
No life social or otherwise, yet somehow I don't always make time for reading unless it's on the terlet. At the very least I try to round off one chapter a day.
Well, I finished Choke last night after starting this thread, I'll see how much more reading I can get done this week. Thanks to everyone who contributed, it's cool to see how you all fit it in to your schedules.
wife and 3 year old twins - up at 5:45, drop off kids to school by 7 at work by 8 - i read on my lunch HALF-HOUR, off at 4:30 pm, get kids by 5:15, home, dinner, kids to bed by 7:30/8 - then i either read or watch stupid tv, hang here, write - usually in bed by 11pm
i used to read more when i had 1 hour lunches, and on the train - in the summer with repeats, i read more - read on the can
if i love the book, i'll read it in 2-7 days depending on time available, i'm cruising through Rant right now - also reading The Road, a Barack Obama book, and Glamorama

I read a book once actually and that was my life and job and something.
I've called in sick to read a couple times.
4 books a month is easily achievable for anyone that atleast reads before bed. I average 4-6 month.
from where do these threads come ?
it's been dead for a year and a half. and here it is again.

^no longer true. I dropped that class the beginning of next semester. now I read in English IV and Egyptology and Health.
I still have a hard time reading at home. too many distractions. maybe I should record one of my teachers lectures and pretend Im at school at home so I can get more reading done.
"It is true, that which I have revealed to you; there is no God, no universe, no human race, no earthly life, no heaven, no hell. It is all a dream - a grotesque and foolish dream. Nothing exists but you. And you are but a thought - a vagrant thought, a useless thought, a homeless thought, wandering forlorn among the empty eternities."
At the moment, I read 6-8 books a month. I have to say that I am still in College, quite a fast reader and an English major as well. So it kinda goes hand in hand.
Maybe 3-4 a month, if I'm not bogged down with school work.
Manage your time well, I know you at least have an hour to yourself through out the day..
If not you can find it.
And fuck you for the non offensive title.
I do not have a life. This is my corpse speaking.
I use to be able to read two or three books a month as time allowed. Then my wife and I had twin sons and I'm lucky to polish off one every month or so. I try to make time for reading but working 50+ hours a week and having parental responsibilities of two ornery 2 year old boys doesn't allow for much time. When the day is done I try to read a little before going to bed but I'm usually so worn out I only make it through a few pages until I can't keep my eyes open any longer.
well let's do the math. Let's say you work 8 hours a day, five days a week. add into that 8 hours a day for sleep. that's leaves you with 8 hours of free time. You can spend 3 or 4 hours a day with friends and social situations, and that leaves you with two hours to read and two hours left over to do anything else you want to. Plus days off when you have an additional 8 hours of free time to divide up.
Let's say you read a half a page a minute, that's not too bad, a little slower than average. Your average book is 300 pages, that's 600 minutes, at 2 hours a day + weekends and you can knock out a book a week.
Right now I'm reading 4 books. It sucks actually, I wouldn't recommend it. I don't finish a lot of books because I read too many at one time. But I get bored too easily and I like to have a variety of books, and I also have to have something to read, I can't stand it if I don't have any books, so I overdo it. I like to read a lot of nonfiction, and I think that unlike a novel, It's hard to get really absorbed in the book and just sit down and read it for hours on end, or even all the way through, as has happened before.
"Nine times out of ten it's an electric razor, but sometimes..."
Wow, 4 books at the same time? I'd get horribly confused.
I want to be your medicine
I want to feed the sparrow in your heart
I used to do that all the time... start a book, find something else interesting, start that one and on and on. I stopped it when I decided that I'd like to actually finish a book one day.
As far as a life... I don't have one. Friends? Forget about it... I think I'm smarter than them because I'm so well-read
I read because I have no friends.. I have no friends because I read... it's a vicious cycle. Plus, I'm a projectionist... not much else to do except read now that IT took away our streaming video. Fuckers!

Substitute watching TV for reading books, and I have as much of a life as anyone else.

I gave up sleeping so now I have 1/3 more life than the rest of you chumps!
Ive read a handful of books, probably 1-2 a year since I was 18 but mostly I'll start a book and never get around to finishing it.
Maybe if I just drink half, I'll be half buzzed for half of the time

You belong in Yawnsville.
What you oughta do is, the next book you get, just read the last 100 pages of it and skip the beginning. Start reading them like that.
^ funny you should mention that because I actually started reading our assigned short stories like that for my creative writing class. There usually about 20-30pgs and just because the first 3 were really uninteresting to me I started reading the last 10pgs instead and it actually made it more enjoyable sometimes made me want to read the whole thing. Ill probably start doing that.

I've always said that's a great thing to do for your writing is once you've written the story cut it in half and have the middle of it act as the beginning.

rude. I read in my spare time. I have a life, I swear!
