Dennis Lehane anyone?
I've recently stumbled on Lehane in the form of audiobooks on my commute. It started with Coronado, an amazing collection of stories that really got my attention.
Then I found out, he's the dude that wrote Mystic River, and since I'd heard of that, I got that audiobook, as well as Shutter Island.
Both of which are taut thrillers with great eureka moments and remarkably good writing, especially for genre fiction.
I'm impressed.
When we call soccer 'football' the terrorists have won.
I've read all his books and admit to being a genre junky but he creates real characters and the city and the neighborhoods are integral characters. For another genre guy, try James Lee Burke southern gothic thrillers where the heat of LA and loss of hope in some of the poorer wards resonate just like in mystic river & gone baby gone
I can't go back to yesterday - because I was a different person then

I loved mystic river
