December 2010 and I am Reading...
unless you got a tv in there.
This is why I subscribe to magazines still.

Craig Davidson's Sarah Court. I like his writing style a lot, as it's very similar to what I usually aim for in my own work. These are interconnected stories bound by neighborhood geography, and he does a great job at capturing their unique first-person voices while maintaining his wit and descriptive talent. A return to form of sorts if you loved Rust and Bone but found The Fighter mediocre.
It's also adding to me despising the cold.
I loved this book. I brought it with me when I hiked the Smokey Mountains. I read it at the end of each day and then in the hotel when we finally got out. I found the story amazing. After you finish - watch the Discovery Channel show Everest (there are two seasons). It's pretty crazy.
I have this beside my bed. I've been slowly reading it in between other things. It's really good writing. I just can't ever stay focused on a short story book. I can't just read a short story book from start to finish.

Have you seen the movie for Into Thin Air? How was that?
I've never seen the movie. I've always wondered how it was too. If you end up checking it out - let me know what you think of it.
oof! My entire left leg is asleep. I just realized I was in there the last 50 minutes reading it! HA!
I hate when that happens!
I love one that happens. But Natalie is suspicious of me. She thinks I'm jerkin' the gherkin in there or something.
I haven't seen it either, but when I looked it up I found it stars Nathanial Parker!

I gave up drinking.
I was going to mention to Tuffy that less time drinking = more time reading. But I see you beat me.

I just reread The Deathly Hallows for the third or fourth time. It was still good.
Phil: I'm with you one Lady Chatterly. I loved that book.

FUCKIN' A!
Doesn't look like it would follow much of the book, but at least it was filmed on the mountain when things were actually happening.

I think this is the one I was talking about. It was a Discovery show I believe. I didn't know there was 3 seasons though. I thought there were only 2. It's really good. Most of the people end up with frost bite. Some go crazy on the mountain. It's just insane what these people push themselves through.

Reliquary by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.
Aye! I have that book in the queue. Is it next month's book club? I'll have to start reading that too, then. Shit. Still working on Candy from last month. And I haven't read one of Auster's books before. Have you? Are they good?

It's usually the best way to approach a book. Guess we'll have a lot to talk about in next month's book club, then.

Put your book in there, then -when it comes out. I took part in Richard's -I think it's cooler if the author actually participates. It's ballsy and awkward for everyone involved -but at the same time, a lot of fun. Do it, man! I'd participate in that for sure.

How is this months one going? I need to take part in these during the New Year.

At first I was thinking about staying out of it because I wanted people to be able to say whatever they wanted about it, and I thought that might be easier if I made a point of staying out of the thread. Now I'm actually leaning towards the opposite after how these last few book threads have gone. I guess I'll see how it goes, then decide.
I think it would be a lot of fun for you. For the readers, too. Plus, it might be a good way to field questions or keep it all organized unless you don't mind people asking you random questions about it in different threads. Just let us know up front, "please say whatever you want about it." And even if it goes south, it could still be a lot of fun with people getting nasty, throwing names and obscenities at each other, and then chairs. No, but I am serious about it being a lot of fun for everyone involved if you decide to participate.

Nobody's read it yet except me, so it's not going anywhere at present. Though Pete's working on it!

I get back from D.C. on the 5th, so I can check and see how it's going then. Sonbert's running the thing, and I know he'll do a good job, so chances are, I might not even need to come around. He should have some pretty good discussion starters for you guys to chew on.
Sounds good -looking forward to it.

What's everyone else reading?
How was this? I picked up Another Bullshit Night in Suck City in the bargain section a few years ago. It was okay.

I finally finished Fight Club and I'm gonna start reading Stephen King's The Dark Tower The Gunslinger.
Oh I loved this book. Some tight writing and some of the best dialogue. As far as noir goes, it doesn't get much better than this - In my opinion at least.
Somebody please give me a good reason to continue reading The Dark Tower series. I've tried twice to read the Gunslinger and failed both times. It is so fucking boring. I love King, but I don't know what it is about this book. I can't read it.

Yeah I kind of have that feeling that it's gonna drag for me. We'll see.
I like listening to Stephen King's books in audio format while I'm driving to my work. They're pretty straight-forward stories and aren't too deep, so they are perfect for my drive.
I tried to start The Gunslinger because of all the hype. But my mind kept wandering. I got to a point where I realized I had no idea what was going on.
I hate it when that happens.

Great but now I'll feel like a dick if I don't at least try to read since my friend let me borrow it. She had just finished telling me how she let someone else borrow a book and they didn't even read it. Gah! Good thing I'll have new reading material soon so maybe i can switch over as soon as I get bored with Gunslinger.

It's pretty good so far. Probably slightly better than his other two that I've read which were fairly decent as well.
I just bought Dermaphoria, I might switch that out with Underworld, I've been finding impossible to get into that book, but I bought it and it's been sitting on my book shelf for like two years and I usual don't get any further than the third chapter. I hate that.

I've tried to read The Gunslinger twice now. I love the first sentence. It's great. A fantastic first sentence. Unfortunately, what follows is an ambush of King's typically purple prose. All flowery and unnecessary. It's like the guy's never heard of "Omit needless words". I can't stand King. I can't read him. He can plot a good story, sure. But as a writer, and reader, I can't get into his style, at all.
I've never gotten further than the first page of The Gunslinger. And I want to like it so bad because the idea, the premise, that first sentence, is badass, and begging for me to love it. But I doubt I'll ever read it, or bother picking it up again.
from everything I've seen it's one of those things that creeps up on you. That if you somehow manage to get through the first book and the second by the time you're reading the third, you realize how real and important the characters feel to you.
Seems like anyone that's read 4+ books of the series think it's the greatest thing ever and if they've read <2 it's just plain and boring.
I guess if you like things like Tolkien and Narnia and whatnot, it's a good thing to jump into, but otherwise probably not.
As for me, I got the first 3 books, I plan to read them someday, but just haven't got around to it yet.
I just don't understand how someone could write such a brilliant opening sentence and then have the gall to follow it with the tripe that's immediately after it, in sentence two. It doesn't make sense to me. I think King's problem is that he just knows he's gonna get published and still be a millionaire now. He Doesn't even have to try. Maybe he is trying. That's probably just his style. I just don't like it, I guess. Wish I did though.
Thanks to this little discussion, I named my first hardcore electronica track Gunslinging Jones.

I couldn't figure out why the word "gunslinger" was in my head when I named it, and then I opened up this thread and POW.

Such a good word though. That's probably half the reason why I want to like the book so much--because it sounds cool.
Christ I give up,
Finished A Summons to Memphis by Peter Taylor, and started Waiting by Ha Jin.
Waiting Years by Fumiko Enchi.
So who wrote it? you usually put the author's name with it.

Towelhead. It's good, it reminds me of my ex-girlfriend.
