Cult Classics Book Club
Anybody interested in getting Cult Classics book club started again? If so, post here and suggest a few books. I already posted this on the official book club board, but I was thinking maybe more people would notice it here.
I could be interested, if persuaded with a good plan of action.

I remember the good old days, pushing Magic Christian at everyone...
When we call soccer 'football' the terrorists have won.
I'm sorry. I was all about helping this thing out. Moe worked pretty hard at getting it going. I have lost all confidence in the members of the cult being able to do anything in an organized fashion. We even were voting for the books WE wanted to read and people weren't participating...
Although nobody ever did pick The Magic Christian... lol. I was rooting for that book every time Chix recommended it.
If we could organize it in a way that I thought we would get a worthy participation, I would definately be in. I'd love to see it going again.
I would love to participate. I know there is still so much out there to read - even things I know I should have picked up long ago.
I am very open to new book suggestions. This sounds like a great idea.
Good coffee is like drinking Rock and Roll.
I'll play.

so do you just read and discuss books that are considered "classics" ?

Remember - "Cult Classics" were books that had a similar feel to Chuck's books. Clevenger, Baer, Coupland, I think House of Leaves was one, Ellis, etc...

I like the sound of that, Im in!!!
i been here 4 years and never heard the term Cult Classics before
Just think of it like the Oprah book club but without the Godsend guidance of the Great Oprah. The way it worked before was that everyone read the same book one month and then we could discuss it. Even if you’re not all that excited by book clubs, it’s nice because you can get a list of suggested reading.
The way it worked before (thanks to Moe.ron and Pgoutis01 for all the hard work) is that there was a list of 5 or so books that everyone could vote on. Someone would also volunteer to be the moderator. The moderator’s job was to start off the discussion, maybe with pre-reading questions, and then keep the discussion rolling.
I was thinking that this time we could try a more traditional book club format wherein there is a list of members and each person picks a month, a book, and then moderates for that book at that time.
What does everybody think?
P.S. None of this would be possible without Pgoutis01 or Moe.ron, so thanks are due.

It could also include books from other times that scratched the same itches. Bukowski, Terry Southern, Barry Hannah, etc.
They don't have to be minimalists, IMHO, though I haven't listed anyone who isn't...

It was mostly Moe. She is the one that compiled the list and did all the work. I just helped a little when needed. But thanks for the compliments anyways!

True - I don't think that it was always the writing style that tied the books together. Sometimes it could be the themes and other stuff.
heii:D
Sounds intriguing... count me in, folks...

Count me in
if it's anything like the Cult Classics I'm thinking of I'm game...Vonnegut all the way
I could get behind something like this....like A Clockwork Orange, that sort of thing?
"I thought I had mono once for an entire year. Turns out I was just really bored."
Wayne Campbell
Okay, so it sounds like there's some interest. Somebody suggested a Vonnegut book. I think that would be a great place to start. His books are easy to get a hold of and read pretty fast. There are two ways we could do it. If sexonaplane wants to be our first moderator, I would invite him/her to pick a Vonnegut book to get us started. Otherwise, I'll pick one and moderate. We'll start reading and discussing in the month of March. Sexonaplane, if you're interested in moderating you can message me and I'll give you an idea of what that involves. Or you could just look at the way the previous book club discussions went down. The biggest responsibility is being finished with the book by the beginning of March. It's up to you.
Please do Sirens of Titan. Or Cat's Cradle...
When we call soccer 'football' the terrorists have won.
waht about Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman ??
neet... xD

Why don't we compose a list of like 5 books and post a poll with the book and the person who recommended it?
When the poll closes the book that was chosen will be the book we read and the person that recommended it can be the leader. Unless that person doesn't want to lead and then somebody can step up to lead.
If you want - I will wait for a some recommendations and then start a thread later today or tomorrow.
Im in. I would love to take part in this.
I think PGoutis has a good idea...get the opinion of the masses then go from there.
we could do all the well known ones like
Slaughterhouse Five
Catcher in the Rye
Catch 22
or we could do some news ones like American Psycho, Geek Love, etc.

just found that link...it basically just gives you examples and explains that cult classics are basically books, movies, etc. that nobody wanted anything to do with then interest skyrocketed
But check in to make sure that you're not recommending things that we've already done a book club for.
I'm in the process of compiling a list. I really would appreciate it if some people threw more recommendations out real quick so the list wasn't like 50% me making it up and only a couple recommendations that we could use... So yeah please recommend books you would like to see in the book club.
i suggest 1. Tarantula by Bob Dylan... real psychedelic
or 2. Hey, Nostradamus by Douglas Coupland or 3. Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger 4. Dubliners by James Joyce 5. No Country for Old Men- Cormac McCarthy 6. anything by Charles bUKOWSKI OR. 7. The Possibility of an Island by Michel Houellebecq

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll go through them.
I already put a Salinger on the list (not Catcher in the Rye).
And we've already done Hey Nostradamus and Dubliners.
But I'll definately look into the other ones.

That would be great. Thanks for all your hard work.
I think that suggestions so far have been Cat's Cradle, Neverwhere, Catcher in the Rye, and Catch 22. I'll throw Clown Girl in the ring.
If anyone else has a suggestion now's the time.
Geek Love, but I will need time to get the book ordered, does anyone know when this is going to begin?

The way it looks the moderator would have it read, I was thinking by the beginning of March. Everybody could start around then. So there's time to get stuff.
I don't know if you need any more suggestions, but World War Z would be cool.
I'd just like to throw out a recommendation for future months. I happened across an advanced copy of a book called The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall, it's set to come out March 28. And I highly recommend it

Are you Steven Hall?
