Confederancy of Dunces
has anyone here read this book? please do yourself a favor and check it out - not a minimalist by any means - but the only book a man wrote before he killed himself - published posthumously by his family - excellent narration and character development...

He wrote another book called "The Neon Bible"...not as good, but still fun. He wrote it when he was 16, I believe.
Read it years ago and its one of these books I want to re-read.
its one of those books that, no matter how many times ive read it
its still funny when i re-read it
Haven't yet read it, but had to say it has the worst cover of a book I have ever seen, easily.
there is an old saying i believe, about book covers and judgement... but yes, it is a butt-ugly cover.

Just bought it a couple of days ago:
Reason:
Read Vernon God Little (loved it). Lots of people were saying that it's the best book since Confederacy of Dunces.
So I got it. Looks brilliant.
The story behind this book is as good as the book itself. I live very near to New Orleans, so the places in this book have a special meaning for me. I hope the movie doesn't suck. John Belushi originally wanted to play Ignatius and now Wil Ferrell is doing it. I think Belushi would have been perfect. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was also considered, but he just isn't commercial enough for this. They need an actor you wouldn't mind hating.
...all I can say is that my life is pretty strange...
im sorry but will ferrel as ignatius is the worst thing ive ever heard.
he cant act for shit. hoffman would have been brilliant. - what do you mean 'not commercial enough' .. this isnt going to be a blockbuster film..

This should NOT be a blockbuster film, but I think it will do well. Big studios are not going to shell out the money to produce a movie like this unless they have a bankable star. Sure, Hoffman is a great actor. He's a national treasure....but he doesn't put people in seats.

and will ferrel does?
if he plays the lead as is the rumour, it would certainly turn myself and a lot of other people i know off of seeing the movie altogether. this wont be a blockbuster movie, but it could do well if they cast it well. the kind of people who would normally go to see a movie like this arent the type who want to see a stand up comedian (and a bad one at that) mash up a perfectly juicy role.
morey, you can say lots of people only made good after they killed themselves.
think about half the art in the world. it only became noticed/valuable after the artists themselves died...
please dont tell me that if youve read this book that you think ferrel has the calibre and charisma to carry off this role
ah right, i think i misunderstood you.. thanks for clearing that up!
i must admit i wouldve thought less of you if you said you liked will ferrel

Please tell me Ferrell isn't that mugging fuck-nut from Elf?
yeah thats him, read the thread dude
I smell another Bonfire Of the Vanities style tragedy. I've only read a few pages of Confederacy... and already I can see that WILL FERRELL WOULD BE EFFING TERRIBLE AS IGNATIUS.
Don't want to be a pessimist or anything...
Look at Jim Carrey's performance in Man on the Moon....that's the same guy who played Ace Ventura and had a cameo as a rock star in one of the Dirty Harry sequels. I think Ferrell might be able to pull it off.

personally, i think carrey's best work was the truman show, and i didnt even really enjoy that. i havent seen eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, however. but i dont think you can compare the two. ace ventura was at least funny in a purile sort of way, elf was just pathetic.

know it. love it.
excellent satire.
you might want to say the name of the author ... John Kennedy Toole
