We are all aware of Danielewski and I am sure that many of us know of Brunner (Stand On Zanzibar, The Sheep Look Up, and The Shockwave Rider) but are there any other authors exploring alternative approaches in fiction? Authors that play with the actual concept of a novel.

There are a few that I've been reading about, but have yet to begin any of their work. What do you guys think of these authors?

-Georges Perec (Life: A User's Manual; A Void)
-William H Gass (The Tunnel)
-William Gaddis (JR; The Recognitions)
-Alain Robbe-Grillet (The Erasers; Jealousy; The Voyeur)
-Kathy Acker (Blood and Guts in High School)

There are more, that of which I do know, but I'm drawing a blank. There's likely a world of complex fiction, and non-fiction, out there. Anyone know of other authors breaking the mold?

If On a Winter's Night a Traveller, by Italo Calvino could fit in here.

I totally forgot about Italo Calvino.
Cosmicomics had an intriguing premise, stories that chronicle the evolution of the universe.

I used to be big on experimental novels, but whenever I brought it up here, I got poo-pooed. Eventually I lost interest. Good luck.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Richard Grossman.  He's got "The Alphabet Man" and "The Book of Lazerus".  I'd heard they were supposed to be a trilogy, but it's been a while since Lazerius was written.

If you're still using paper you're not even close to experimental.

Check out Shelley Jackson (she did the short story written in single word tattoos on a couple thousand people):
