Chad Kultgen - The Average American Male
This book is definitely one of my favorites from 2008! The description of the female characters was spot on! I loved it loved it loved in all its macho glory! A must read and close to cult!
Anyone else ?
I loved "The Average American Male." It was funny and poignant. Being a guy, though, I really found myself sympathetic to the hero of the book. There was a sort of aimlessness to him, but I'm not sure if that's what it was intended to be or if it was something that I assigned to him because I could relate to his anxieties on some levels.
I lent the book to one or two of my female coworkers and they liked it and their general feelings were that the protagonist was just a jerk if anything. I was kind of frustrated by that response because it seemed kind of dismissive. I kind of want to know more what women readers have to say about his choices. I'm not sure what I'm looking for except maybe some sort of affirmation that, yes, what he did throughout the course of the book wasn't that far outside the realm of acceptibility. Or something like that.
I'm not sure what any of it proves. I guess I'm just curious.
Meh.
Well I did understand the guy. Seriously, the women were total nutjobs. Personally, I do think that some women definitely think the way Casey did. I did not think that the protagonist was a jerk - if he was, so where the women! - I thought he seemed quite normal in his behaviour. (Though maybe I am biased as I mostly know College guys with the same mentality)
I loved this book.
I don't know if I felt sorry for the main character, but I identified with him. This might make no sense, but he reminds me of a passive version of the narrator of Fight Club. Disenfranchised, looking for something - anything, being misunderstood but by women but more than anyone, himself. It's got that whole nihilistic thing going on.
The women in his story were nutjobs, but so is the main character. There's no way the book would've been as good as it was if it had been written any differently.
After I read it, I commented on his myspace page (yeah I'm that cool) and said something to the effect of, "at the end of the day, we're ALL that creepy old person tonguing yogurt at the mall" and commented back and agreed with me. (Again, that cool.)
In the end, I thought it was a great book.
hah, yeah. for some reason, this book actually had some sort of effect on me. Really the moral being, "No matter which girl you choose, and no matter how awesome she is, you'll always get bored eventually."
I hope that isn't true.
But this was the first time a book ever made me want one of the characters to exist so i could just punch that character in the gut. (CASEY) She was the most , like, annoying character ever. But I loved his other girlfriend...
For some reason, (that reason being that i was having girl problems and wanted to vent them out in a woman hating book) I picked up Chad's new book-the Lie.
He really does make the same characters...like, yeah. and its bound to remind you of some people you know.
oh your god, i hate the word 'like'.
this book was great, had me laughing my ass off. the main character truly is the average american male, lol.

Dear Pretentious Boob:
Well, I do completely agree with your view on the main character. He seems to keep himself seperated no matter what. Anyhow, I thought it was funny that both female co-workers ended up saying the same thing: he's a jerk. Which, of course, he can be, but what guy can't? So I suppose I'm offering a female point of view regardless of the fact I get told I think like a man by a lot of people. Ha.
I loved this book. I honestly feel that this book describes how a majority of men think and feel on a daily basis. I think the problem is still the same problem it always has been: the double standard. He's the man for fucking all those girls, any girl is just another slut because she let him fuck her. So of course women that read this are going to be like OMG he's so disrespectful blah blah, but in all honesty, I think most women envy the fact that they will never have the freedom that he does. I know a lot of chicks that just wanna go out and get laid, fuck phone numbers and formalities, but in the end it somehow ends with the girl being the skank, thus, many girls shy away from the thought of being a.. player, I guess we'll call it.
So all of that boils down to: Thank you Chad Kultgen for finally saying it all out loud! What guys do to impress us on the first couple dates, if you start dating how they act and what they think when they become complacent. And how men can possibly feel if they finally do, really, find that one girl.
Maybe it's the bitter side of me because I've dated several men that were just like the main character
"Too weird to live, too rare to die."
I'm really not sure who that was directed towards since everybody in this thread said they liked it.

Hmm - No thoughts from anyone?
I was watching this thread to see what people would say...
