"When you leave your typewriter you leave your machine gun and the rats come pouring through." - From Notes of a Dirty Old Man
I gave a copy of Run With The Hunted to a first generation immigrant from Guatemala today. My work is complete.
picked this up really cheap the other day at the bookstore down the road. i think it was four bucks, maybe five. either way, too cheap. i have yet to read anything from it though.

I imagine his letters would be pretty entertaining.
I have the 2 books of letters of Hunter Thompson's. Some of his best writing is in those letters.
yeah, Ginsberg, Burroughs and Kerouac's letters are pretty entertaining, too.
Especially in The Proud Highway, mm-hmm. Probably my favorite collection of his work: more revealing than his autobiography, more touching/powerful than his essays, more creative than his fiction. Beautiful, beautiful book.
I see myself purchasing that Bukowski correspondence compendium in the future--I have a feeling it compares favorably to the above.
I will be back to add more after I get to work. But I just wanted to say one thing right now.
If your proffessor knew so much, why couldn't he at least pronounce the name right?
And if you think his stuff is about only drinking and fucking... I mean it is. But there's more to it - underlying, maybe hidden.
Just check out this reading of the shower. It's about him sexy timing his girl, then they take a shower. He starts crying halfway through.
fuck, Pete. I'm so glad you found and posted this. i just cried listening to this again. this is just so beautiful, and it shows that humane side of Bukowski that is so well hidden in the text.
fucking great video.
anyone ever read those letters from james joyce? Hotcheemomma!
I can't believe this thread keeps coming back. And I thought I was the only one who could ramble on about Buk.

I'm reading Women right now. It's great. But I got some dirty looks the other day. I was reading it at this playground place where yuppies drop off there kids. It's like a warehouse turned into a giant jungle gym.
Anyway, I'm there with the wife and daughter, and the dads are mostly watching Germany beat Uraguay, so I'm sitting there reading Women, and all the women near me really disapproved of the cover. I think. I didn't even realize it until we were about to leave.
It was funny.

Happy birthday, Bukowski.
isn't it tomorrow, August 16? and wouldn't that be in two days for you guys? isn't it still august 14 over your side of the pond?
Yeah, but I'm going to a Bukowski birthday party tonight, he he he.
ah, cool. Bukowski birthday party. that's genius.
you got a lot of mates that are into Bukowski or something? or is a bukowski birthday party some kind of weird slang for a bunch of people getting together to drink cheap booze, fuck cheap women and write?
I have the 2 books of letters of Hunter Thompson's. Some of his best writing is in those letters.
I salute you
when you read the Proud Highway you can see that he knew he'd be a writer and nothing would stop him. whether it was kicking a few candy bars, dropping a few bags of lime of billyclubbing a few homo's in the Big Sur baths, those letters are amazing.
I may have spelt a few things wrong above, the grammar police may come to get me but its ok i've spent a few nights in the "comma's" before
"They express their individuality by wearing the same clothes reading the same books listening to the same music and hanging around in a big group - individulas finding safety in numbers - even God laughed at that one" Chuck Palahniuk
IT'S 'OKAY' NOT 'OK', DAMNITTTTTTTTT!
I'm in love with Charles Bukowski.
From reading the back of Ham On Rye, I thought I was not going to like the book. So glad I read it. He is too fantastic. I have read Post Office and Pulp. I am trying to get my hands on the other books, but my library doesn't allow those types of books there. Ridiculous.
Ham On Rye is my favorite. I am just so disappointed that I went so long in life without his wonderful works in my life.
Good arms vs bad arms will win hands down.
is it "Good day to you sir or G'Dayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy"
"They express their individuality by wearing the same clothes reading the same books listening to the same music and hanging around in a big group - individulas finding safety in numbers - even God laughed at that one" Chuck Palahniuk
I know a lot of people say Ham on Rye is their favorite... But still, Women is my favorite. Probably because it was my first.
i really dig Women too, Pete. my favourite would be either that or Factotum. or post office. do i have to pick a favourite Bukowski novel? still haven't read Ham on Rye.
Bumping this since I'm reading Hot Water Music. And it's always a good time to show some Bukowski love
I imagine loving Bukowski will only leave you riddled with literary STDs.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with Bukowski unless you fail to go beyond him.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I like the Bukowski legend, because legendary writer types always have their appeal. But the Bukowski oeuvre is less compelling.
Also, I'm patenting "literary STDs" for a future work of literary criticism.

Win!

I read the book long before I saw the movie. Sad thing is I barely remember the movie, because I didn't like it as much as the book.
Rad! Thanks for posting this.
