During these 2months, I need to get together with Kitty and start working on the upcoming *true* Cult Bookclub website, and get a designer to do the layout. I'd ask Roland, but he seems to be AWOL.

BOOKS FOR MAY/JUNE ARE:

House of Leaves (everybody here knows the author)

Jennifer Government by Max Barry

edit: sorry for the mispell, i was late for work Tongue

read both books!

Mark Z. Danielwsky.

Anywho, I thought you already chose House of Leaves, Zaki?

Yes XChuck, but i don't think the others knew. I really want them to read that book (and I want to finish it myself this time around). It's gonna one of those "I read this during summer and it was fucking awesome weird" experience.

I just finished it a few nights ago (at least the main part, I'm still reading the poems diagrams and all that stuff at the end), and I have to say....it is weird, cool, out of this world, amazing, and something you will have never seen coming and never see again.

So, I'm a little confused, if we want to participate, we should read both? Or do we have a choice between the two? What's going on? And are we supposed to be discussing American Psycho right now? No offense to you, Zaki, and anyone else in charge, but it's a little unorganized. I think we need some kind of visual schedule or something so we know when to do things. Even have set times to discuss readings in the chat room. Chapters A through B this weekend, C through D the next weekend, so on and so forth.

I totally agree with you. That's why I'm kinda putting things on hiatus for 2 months, to put a bookclub site together with a schedule.

You should read both of these books. If everybody already read these 2, I can mention a 3rd book.

Excellent. Way to be on top of things, Zaki. And next time I'll stick my suggestions in the suggestion box, i.e. that other thread for suggestions. Smile

We might just see it in a few years, for Mark Z. has announced that his new book should take up to 5 years to make.

Wait, so does that mean there's no book club discussion of American Psycho? Well, no official one anyway? Book Club is getting pushed back to June or July?

It's tough to start and tough to read, but once you're done, it will be worth it. While I read it, I got so into it that I seriously thought that it was changing me. The book took hold of me and I was honestly scared for the duration of the time it took me to read it.

Once you're done, not only is it a relief, but it is amazing. The book was well worth the overdue library bill I know hold.

How exactly are you supposed to read House of Leaves...? I was confused as soon as I picked up the book.

while you're reading the mainstory, read the footnotes as you go. Read it all...page by page...no skipping.

Syrup was fucking awesome!! I read Jennifer Gov't first and it seems with agreement with most of you guys, Syrup was favored more. I love satire, and Max Barry gives straight satire. Which I think I am in need of since Chuck has seemed to back down from satirical writing. Is anyone else dissappointed with his change of direction???? I just think satire is great and should be practiced just for the sake of defending our constitution. But that's just me, and I'm getting too worked up over this. Anyone else feel the same way?
I especially liked Max Barry's way of weaving in gender issues with his commentary on corporate power and marketing.

What about those random blue boxes in HOL? And the ones with reversed text? What am I supposed to do with those?

Syrup was good but became redundant. One bad thing after another kept on happening to a point where it became old and annoying. I prefer Jennifer Government. I will anxiously await Barry's next novel.

Wow. Some people are truly helpless. If you even tried to look, you'd see that the blue boxes all are ONE LONG NOTE. If there's tons of individual words inside of them, you don't have to read it it's just there for the sake of being there.

And it's just a book. Don't be so scared of it. I mean as an object.

I think The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall should be included in the next book club. His writing style reminds me of Chuck and MZD (House of Leaves author) put together. He constructs the most delicate sentences. They're so good that you have to read them a few times just to appreciate the perfection of them.

If it's printed backwards...find a mirror and read it in the mirror. That's what I did.

House of Leaves isn't for everyone. Just like his 2nd novel Only Revolutions isn't for everyone. He's a think-outside-the-box author.
