Anyone else dislike McCarthy's writing style?

Just the literary diction:

"The mother dead these fourteen years did incubate in her bosom the creature who would carry her off."

Stuff like that, makes the flow really tough for me. It could be because I'm not used to a book that I really have to put so much time into.

hmm..

McCarthy is sometimes a pompous ass when he writes but goddamn the man can spin a yarn. Push through it, it's worth it.

Fox, avoid James Joyce.

I'm having to put a lot of time into Moby-Dick for that same type of reason. But, oh man, it's so good, it doesn't really feel like a chore. More like savouring each sentence.

but, yeah, I was finished with Mccarthy after reading The Road and seeing No Country for Old Men.

he's a good writer but I dislike the fact that 60% of the book was detailed descriptions of the landscape and how red and ungodly it was. ugh. I pointed that out in another thread and nate told me that the road was exactly the same so I pretty much avoid him.

and before anyone can say anything, I was more then halfway through meridian before giving up so you cant say I didnt give him a chance.

he's incredible and sometimes harsh but always of grit for the story
the man is a fucking talented writer

though i did not savor no country, either of the two times i read it front to back, nor--like nate--enjoyed the movie, blood meridian and the road were outright exceptional. the road is one of the best written novels in forever. i still have all the pretty horses to go, but i have to reread suttree first. cept ive misplaced it and have to refind it. it's like compulsion; i have to get through suttree a second time before i can touch the horses. whatever. what works.

Totally agree with you on that. I read it twice, literally back to back. I went back to page one when I'd finished it the first time.

i'm not so ready for the reread..
took too much outta me the first time. that's a guess. who can know such trivia!
i will more than likely get back to it a year or so after i view the movie coming soon.

I've read Child of God, The Orchard Keeper, All the Pretty Horses, The Road, Blood Meridian, and No Country For Old Men. I still don't get why he's so popular, but dammit, I'm trying.

I like Blood Meridian just because it's hard to read! It keeps the rif-raf away, and gives the book tremendous snob appeal. I like to read it at the gym, and make everyone else feel like lesser human beings. (But in truth, I'm just pretending to read it, cuz that shit's hard. I should probably just take the Blood Meridian cover and put it over a Judy Blume book. I think I'll do that right now.)

I read The Road, Blood Meridian, and No Country for Old Men, and gave up. I already played this game with Tom Robbins. If I don't like two of an author's books, I'm just going to stop trying. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Those three are my favorites!

I respect that other people can't get into his style. I just get pissed when they say he's overrated or pretentious. If you don't like a writer, fine, move on. Just don't berate other people for their tastes. (Yes, no one is doing it in this thread, but McCarthy threads can get ugly!)

I can respect his style, I think he's a wonderful writer and his work is a wonderful display of how beautiful our language can be. It's not that I'm unintelligent, that's just silly, I don't need a dictionary either, I understand the words, I just think sometimes the way his sentences are put together make the flow really difficult. I'm still going to try to read it, I rarely give up on a book.

To be fair I have said all those things before, but that was mostly just to fuck with Tom.

To be fair, I just quoted this because it already contained three quotes within a quote and I just wanted to quote more stuff.

The first time I read this, my eyes skipped over the word "with" and I was pretty shocked.

I must say though that The Orchard Keeper is quite a solid novel. The style is different from the recent stuff, and more to my liking.
