Anyone want some Stephen King books?

Im a fiend for King and since my post Rehab days Ive built up quite a collection. Now its time to give it away. Im going to keep one hardback copy of each of his books for myself and the rest are going to my fellow Culties. I could easily bring them all off to the secondhand shop in Galway and trade them in but I would prefer if they were read and not left on a shelf in a storeroom. So if you want one let me know through this thread.

As of two weeks time, one person a week is entitled to between 1 and 4 King books which I will post out from Ireland. To help you choose you can use this great website for a Bibliography, www.fantasticfiction.co.uk.

If youve never read a King book but may like one I will choose one for you.

First up to go is 3 copies of On Writing, its a non fiction account of how to write, well worth having for any budding writers. I would love to send it to anyone who takes part in the Workshops.

I will keep sending until my collection is gone.

I dont want anything in return but if you insist a crad, letter or spare kidney will do.

Happy Reading!

hmmm.... I've never really read any King, but I've always wanted to read The Green Mile.

You don't got any extras of Rage, do you?

I would ask how anyone ends up with 3 copies of On Writing, but I've also got an extra copy of The Stand. They just show up somehow.
It's free if anyone wants it as well.

I have a copy of Rage in the Bachman Books, isnt that the one that was banned in the US?

I have about 3-4 copies of most of his early stuff. Every week when I had to go to aftercare in the city I would pop into this secondhand bookstore and buy some King books. It gave me something to do with the money I was saving from booze etc.

Rage is yours Nate, I already have your addy.

If you have any more copies of "On Writing", I would greatly appreciate it. I haven't read any of his books, but have heard very good things. Which of his books do you recommend?

Hello and Welcome

I will pick out one of his for you and throw in On Writing. But first you have to stick around the Cult.

If youve got a paperback of Everything Eventual Id like that one aswell.

Im not really a big fan of Kings novels. I think he writes best in the short story form. It just seems like when he writes something big he just kind of overdoes it. well, except for his nonfiction, On Writing was awesome and Ive yet read Danse Macabre. I think he should write a sort of sequal to that picking up where the first left off, including chapters about torture-porn and the reemergence of the zombie in popular culture.

Never really read King but if you have any extra copies of a book of his short stories, I'd be glad to check it out, man.

On Writing is a great book for anybody who is considering writing.  Of his books, the Bachman Books (which includes Rage and The Long Walk, as well as Roadwork and Running Man) is a fantastic grouping, I also love The Stand, IT, The Dark Tower Series (there are 7), Dead Zone, Pet Sematary, and any of his short collections.

Have fun Derek, I'm good, I don't need anything.  Just that hardcover 1st edition of Carrie.

Derek,

First let me say that your kindness is wonderfully refreshing.  On Writing is very enjoyable, and there are some gems on the craft to found inside.

My book requests would first include The Stand.  As a King expert, what are your personal opinions on that one?  And I'm also interested in Different Seasons, being that it contains Apt Pupil, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, along with The Body.

Of course, if you have a better suggestion for me, I trust your wisdom.  Thanks again for sharing!

Dave

good on you, barcaboy.  this is really selfless. i already have some of his books and won't be requesting but for those interested, you may want to ask for Misery, Four Past Midnight, and The Shining, of course.

I'm not asking for it, but I loved Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. Mostly though because I loved The Shawshank Redeption.

he has a lot of great books but most of them you need to really reach inside your head to imagine what he's trying to paint with his words (especially From A Buick 8, which I think is one of his weakest books). If you want to start with something non-supernatural (well, to a degree), try Misery. You can also try Salem's Lot, which starts slow but builds up in the middle and towards the end. Tommyknockers too is good, I still get chills when i remember the scene with the dog.

If you want to see how he can create a whole book out of just a very simple plot line, try Gerald's Game. I can't remember if he blatantly used deus ex machinas to save the story but I thought it was a pretty good read.

Totally amazing Barca.

I know i don't even know you on a personal level, but you always seem to be giving something to someone. i'd like to send a couple books your way - because you read faster than anyone else i've never met, and because you are alway giving without expecting in return.  PM me.  for serious.

Barca Boy,

it sure is generous of you to send all your books from Ireland!!!  Can I get a hook-up on some books from the Dark Tower series??  I've read books one and two, and they were awesome.

What was your final opinion on Duma Key, by the way? I liked it.  It didn't make me run circles around the block like I thought I would, but it was really well-written. Now I need to re-read Lisey's Story. Man, that book was awesome!!!

mmm... I would love to read misery in english (since i read the spanish version, and gerald`s game seeems fun (but i can get that one here) I rather ask for "the rage" (if you have another copy besides the one that goes to nate) since I have not read it at all, and I can`t get it here, and nate got me  all  curious on it.

the other day a friend of mine actually yelled at me because I had a stephen king book on the shelf, she started to go all like "OH MY GOOOD this is just a little stupid american novel, you can`t red this!!!" she is into sartre an that stuff and apparently she does not know how to enjoy a scary story, the funny thing is that when I went into her home she had an OSHO book next to all her philosophy, I shut my mounth not looking for confrontation.

Thanx in advance bro.

I probably shouldn't ask for any books anyway since I'm moving to GREECE in 12 weeks!!!!!!!!!!  And I've about 50 other books in my possession that I still need to read because I'm addicted to books, and I kept buying them and checking them out from the library and borrowing them from friends.

Now I have a book castle.

Current read: The Demon by Hubert Selby, Jr. (awesome)

I have no idea what an OSHO book is but Joe Hill is one of Stephen Kings sons thats now writing aswell. He wrote a good book of short stories called 20th Century Ghosts and a promising first novel called Heart Shaped Box. You wont see anywhere on his books that hes the son of Stephen King. His brother Owen King writes aswell.

I love what you're doing Derek.  I'm a huge King fan and have read roughly 80% of his work (don't worry I'll finish).  Some of my prized possessions are my first editions of Carrie, Salem's Lot, and The Stand, bequeathed to me by my mother.  I realized the other day when Pet Sematary was about to come on the tele that I've never read it.   I quickly changed the channel as to not ruin what I know I'll eventually read.  I made that mistake watching The Shining.  It wasn't really a mistake, I was young and had never read King.  But every time I read The Shining I always see Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrence, and I like to see my own characters in my head, ya know?

So about Pet Sematary, do I make the cut?
