Aww...
have you guys seen this crazy Haunted review?
www.laurahird.com/newreview/haunted.html
Don't get the feeling the guy likes Chuck much...
Reading in the bath? What are you, a pansy?
I said exteme thrills. Now pass me that buttered crumpet before it cools down. I wanna taste the HEAT
I used to read during physical fights, but it got to be quite strenous.
You got to turn the page with your toes, punch with your fists. It's the first rule of Reading Club.
It's my head toe coordination.
Well, we're gonna have to lop one of them off. Which one will it be?
Summary: Graham Rae lives in Scotland where he hates Catholics and nurtures a low-key kind of homophobia. His hobbies include writing long rants filled with ad hominum attacks and intentionally exposing himself to things that disgust him, then becoming upset about it.
That pretty much nails it, though I think he now lives in America.
Graham, that's an excellent review! I don't know for sure if you're the 'instigator' but I suspect it's probably you, the author of the review, since the instigator joined only today and only to share this critical masterpiece with us. Thank you for joining The Cult just to share it with us. Did I already say 'share it with us'? I can't stop repeating myself today... but this new nineinchnails CD is incredible!
I especially like your blazing use of the 'F' word toward the end and, of course, the obligatory ad hominem attack on Chuck Palahniuk's fan base. These marks set your work apart as professional criticism, for sure. If you spent much time on this website, you'd know that many of us don't like Haunted all that well, and for many of the same reasons you covered, regarding its recourse to simple and extreme shock value, it's stitching together of disparate stories with a questionable connecting device, and the unbelievable trope of suggesting 19 different authors when the authorial voice really doesn't vary.
Scores of savvy Palahniuk readers and fans like his earlier works much better than his latest, but it doesn't move us to take brutal digs at other fans vis a vis the standard stereotype, nor does it move us to take personal digs at Chuck based on his sexuality, religion, real life tragedies, or anything else. Next time, spare us the psychobabble and save yourself the 15 minutes worth of research that produced this completely amateur historiography of the author's life as reflected in his work. Righteous indignation alone doesn't save this review from the very stamp of hack-work that it so eagerly dispenses.
Edit: Damn, wish I'd seen Spike's Summary. Could've saved me the trouble.

Didja really hafta delete my thread? After all, it did/does have a psychological/sociological writer-in-question craft/psyche point...leave it up...whassamatter, can't take a wee bit of destructive constructive criticism?
www.laurahird.com/newreview/chuckpalahniukreading.html
And I might ask you one very serious question. If you find my post offensive, one long-term disappointed/creeped-out ex-fan's appraisal of Mr Palahniuk and his new direction, you might want to ask yourself why you find my post offensive...and yet find a man standing in public talking about seven-year-old girls masturbating or naked dead old men to be so amazingly enthralling.
Just a thought.

G.
we already know haunted sucks? whats to talk about
bring something interesting next time
First of all it wasn't deleted. Its just no one cared to post on it so it went away. Secondly, this is me merging this thread into that one.

With a username like instigator, how could we ever see it coming that you would try to stir up shit just to see what happens?
their even to chickenshit to come back and argue ?!
what the shit is that all about ?
wait
where both these threads named Awww ??
No.

awwwwwww !
You'd think someone called Instigator would try harder.
Learn to hate correctly, damnit.
When we call soccer 'football' the terrorists have won.
"G"...
Why do you want us to read this review so desperately?
Is it your finest hour?
Yours,
P.
Ah, just read (bits of) the second.
Are you really that chuffed that you stood up in front of a crowd of people and asked Palahniuk an inane, pointless question?
Because, truly, you don't come across as the hero you seem to think you are.
G, Instigator, Grae, Graham...whatever your name is - I used to write reviews too. They're fun! A good way to work on your writing, and a good way to figure out what you like and don't like.
But please don't think you're doing or saying anything particularly note-worthy.
We all know that statues aren't made for critics, but maybe non-paying hack websites are.
all i wanna know is why just Haunted? why not criticize any of his other books?
maybe in Awwww part III
Can any natives Scot's explain what "punt" means as used here:
"and you grunt and punt
your load into her cunt"
http://www.laurahird.com/showcase/grahamrae2.html
It's certainly a beautiful couplet.
As a native Scot, I'm not too familiar with it in that context.
But I wonder!
Could the poet be using the term in reference to "Punting" - as in "Punting along the Thames". It's an activity that involves the use of a large wooden pole.
Masterfully, he leaves us to draw our own conclusions...
"huff and puff
your load into her muff"
..might have worked better. "Cunt" is so difficult to rhyme!

Your posts aren't offensive, just rather boring, like your articles:)
you could make a Three Little Pigs kind of connection
to show like the loss of childlike innocence or something
brilliance!

For me that conjures an imagery of a 106 year old guy ejaculating a whispy cloud of spores like a puff-ball mushroom.
Edit: oh, and I've already read the book, formed my own opinion and have no need of a review.

I don't have time to read that I'm afraid.
I'm too busy smearing my existential excrement on my new gay alienated ex druggie St Sebastian patron and generally rooting around for extreme thrills. Like reading in the bath.
