Sir Arthur C. Clarke died on March 18th at the age of 90 in Sri Lanka - which is where he lived since 1956.
Sir Arthur C. Clarke was considered one of the "Big Three" by many in the Science Fiction community. The Big Three consisting of: Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, and (of course) Sir Arthur C. Clarke.
One of his best known works is probably 2001: A Space Odyssey - which he wrote with Stanley Kubrick.
There's a pretty good article about his life and works found here: Omnivoracious

ah that sucks. I love the 2001 series (other than 3001). Wonderful writer but in all honesty the dude was 90. NINTEY! i cant imagine living to be 60 let alone 90.

I heard about this yesterday. Sad. I think I read somewhere that he wrote over a 100 books. Remarkable.
