I'm almost done with Behold the Man.  It's actually really good.  I thought I wasn't going to like it because I'm pretty religious - but so far it's been really entertaining.

The book really has a modern feel.  I was surprised to see in the copyright information that it was originally published in 1969.  Not that that is so long ago - but the book is sort of reading like Apathy and Other Small Victories (Apathy is still much better being one of my favorite books).

I'm reading Pnin by Nabokov.  I wasn't too impressed with King, Queen, Knave, which is the last book I've read by him, but I've heard this is amongst his better ones.

I loved that book. Let me know what you think of it.  Have you read The Beach? I think The Tesseract is slightly below The Beach, but still an outstanding read.

I'm reading Jailbird by Vonnegut.  It's ok so far.  Most of Vonnegut's books take a little while for me to get fully wrapped up in, so I'm sure it'll pick up.

i loved the tesseract. i read the beach first and that's what led me to the tesseract. i can relate to it because i spent my college years in manila and grew up in a small city close to the location of the rural story plot. the native dialogue was a bit clunky (as expected, i doubt garland is a native speaker though he probably had help) but all the social and superstitious rural mores were pretty much on target. all the plots weaved together nicely in the end.

the beach was fantastic. i saw bits of the movie first (i don't remember finishing it and i don't remember liking it) but i'm really glad i picked up the book. it is outstanding for a first (?) novel.

That pisses me off aswell, as soon as I see he has a new movie out I rush to the bookshop only to find out there is no book. The Beach is one of my favourites of all time.

Around the middle of Gravity's Rainbow by Pynchon.  Took a while to get traction with it, as the first two hundred odd pages are extremely fragmented, but it's showing some definite potential, with your typical Pynchonian cast of bizarrely named characters and sweeping paranoia.

I'm reading Song Yet Sung by James McBride. It's about slavery and the Underground Railroad and the secret code that was used to pass along messages to all those involved. I expected it to be sort of adolescent, as most historical novels about slavery in America are, but it's not. The dialogue is gritty and full of awesome Old South slave lingo. Good stuff.

I spent most of the summer reading Koji Suzuki, I finished the Ring books, Birthday, and Dark Water. I've also read Truancy by Isamu Fukui, Rumors by Anna Godbersen, and Things the Grandchildren Should Know by Mark Oliver Everett.

Yeah, I hated that too. Even worse is her incredibly whiny book Lucky.

Can't we multiquote anymore? I read the Twilight books and would recommend them but only if you like young adult girl books (which I do).

I just started Snuff.

I have read the first three books in the series, and have book four waiting on my shelf. They're fun little reads, and pretty quick. I equate them with other fantasy series books (like The Dresden Files, of which I'm a fan); there's nothing really arty or edgy about them, they're just fun little adventures.

I liked them a lot. Loop is a great conclusion to the series and a something you wouldn't expect. I suggest you read Loop before Birthday though because I made the mistake of reading birthday first and it spoiled everything else.

I read Snuff on a plane last week....meh.  It was a little awkward because the guy next to me was reading it over my shoulder the whole time and I don't think he could've been a day older than 17 and I'm like, a grown up.

And now I'm reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman. 'Tis very gewd so far.

You and the person who loaned it to me said the same thing, basically. The story's apparently rather good, but she picked a rather pedantic and exhausting way of writing it (even though it's "in character"). I've got to ask, though: do the annotations ever really lend anything to the story? I've begun skimming over them and I'm afraid I'm missing something, but I just can't read each one word for word. She just never seems to get to the point that way.
