August, Damn Summer is nearly over and I am reading...
Rereading American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis
and The Box and other stories by Richard Matheson.
Tree of Smoke by Denis Johnson
Before getting to my specially selected Eurotrip books, South of Nowhere and Elephant's Memory, by Antonio Lobo Antunes.
Omgomgomg. You made my WEEK. Just for that, I'm going to finish The Brothers Karamazov.
There is hope, but not for us.
Anna Karenina effed up my childhood!
i am reading these posts
so far so god?
"They express their individuality by wearing the same clothes reading the same books listening to the same music and hanging around in a big group - individulas finding safety in numbers - even God laughed at that one" Chuck Palahniuk
i'm on a bit of a Raymond Carver kick at the moment. I had to read Fat for class and even though i have read it a good ten times before i still read it again and then i read Neighbours, and so on until the closing and title story of Will You Please Be Quiet, Please.
Light Boxes by Shane Jones
It was one of the best books I read in a while; Scooter- Mick Foley
"The rat inside your brain rules the world."
Citizen Kane SUCKED!!!!!!! True fact.
Alcoholism is the cure not the disease.
I gave up on American Gods before the end. Instead I've started rereading the first volume of the Chronicles of Amber, titled Nine Princes of Amber (Roger Zelazny), a much better treatment of a similar idea.

Still swimming through The Raw Shark Texts and also started At the Water's Edge : Fish with Fingers, Whales with Legs, and How Life Came Ashore but Then Went Back to Sea
Think for yourself. Question Authority.
P.S. I really want to read the "new" Mark Twain autobiography

Everything is Illuminated by Foer for University.
Really? What do you think so far? I dislike that guy so much I can't read his writing.
I'm reading You Shall Know Us By Our Velocity, by Dave Eggars and am not sure how I feel about it.
I'm also not sure I like the undertones in my recent writing that sound a bit like him.
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
Apart from Anna Karenina, I'm also reading Saramago's Gospel According to Jesus Christ, which is AWESOME.

I didn't finish Velocity. It was a little too lighthearted or something, i don't know. There were some brilliant parts but i found it boring. What is the What is great though, much more interesting than Velocity.
Sounds interesting. I'll give it a shot.
I'm not HATING Velocity, but I'm just not really into it. I'm going to give it another few days.
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
I was kind of excited to get this Return of Sherlock Holmes with a bunch of short stories and whatnot, but now I want to hold off on it and get the rest of them and read them in chronological order that they were released. Kinda sucks but oh well. I'll probably try The Caine Mutiny instead.
Omgomgomg. You made my WEEK. Just for that, I'm going to finish The Brothers Karamazov.
We oughta start a Tolstoy thread. I've only read a couple of his short stories but, WOW! Them damn dirty Ruskies knew how to write a little bit. Good thing we just raced them in space or they would've kicked our asses.

i've only read a little bit, but i have to say, i'm not fussed at all, so far. i hate novels where the opening sentence is the narrrator telling us his name. it's so pointless, it's something you can reveal later in dialogue or something. it's a shitty 'hook'. moby dick is probably the exception. probably.
i'm gonna get right into it tomorrow, see how it goes.
I enjoy Eggers work, Foer not so much. His books have moments, but overall I don't really like his style. I'm finding I have little tolerance for meandering protagonists.
Don't read my first book. (This is good advice for all)
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
hurry up and write it, so i can not read it then.
Last night I started Leaving Las Vegas. The writing is really good. I'm sucked in. I can tell I'm going to love this book and I'm not even that far into it - maybe a few pages or so.
shit. i want to read that so bad, Pete. it's on my next order. but money is tight at the moment, so i haven't done a big order in a while.
Savages, by Don Winslow. Buy it. Read it. NOW.
peace, love, and angst
Transubstantiate by Richard Thomas.
Nice!
Gearing up for the discussion?
Just finished Eating the Dinosaur by Klosterman (skipping the parts about basketball because I don't give a shit.) Probably his best book so far, barring Downtown Owl, which I have not read. The last essay on the Unabomber might be the best essay of his that I've ever read.
There is hope, but not for us.
I'm liking Heartsick but does she have to tell us Susan's hair is pink every time her hair is mentioned? We get it, she's weird and indie and a little punk rock. She has pink hair. She put her pink hair up in pigtails. She ran her hand through her pink hair. She looked at her pink hair in the mirror. OK!
At the moment her hair is pink, but she has dyed it green or blue or red in the past. This is a phase for her hair to be this pink. lol
Does she use the color of her hair as a sort of timepiece? Like the different colors represent a different stage in her life or something? That's pretty ingenious actually. But, yeah, you don't need to mention it every single time.
I'm reading The Recognitions, by William Gaddis, and it's heavy going but as enjoyable as a kiss from Heidi Klum.

Actually sort of. She uses it like starting fresh. A renewal. Which is pretty clever. But she does say the hair color a little too much.
Someone loaned me
Consider the Lobster
by DFW, so that's next up on my plate.
There is hope, but not for us.
"Lobster." I get it! lol!
Haha I tried to italicize and it quoted instead. Rough morning.

i just can't seem to get into this book. it's meant to be genius, but i don't think i'll even get to the genius. i have read the first ten pages about three times now, trying to jump-start myself into the story, but i just can't. i just don't like it. they guy is wanking his big literary dick, and i can't even tell what over yet.
anyone else here that just can't deal with this book?
i'm meant to have read it by tuesday, so i have tomorrow to read it, which is still doable, but i just don't feel like wasting a whole day reading the drivel.
Yesterday it was Out of Touch by Brandon Tietz, which all Cultists surely have/will/should devour/ed with great aplomb.
Now it's on to The Mysteries of Pittsburgh by Chabon. Too early to say, though the prose is certainly delicious, and the guy's my hero, so its rope will be long.
I'm about 600 pages into this and have loved it so far.
Ive gone back to High Life by Mathew Stokoe. I was right to save this for an easier week. Its great.
i don't think i can physically finish Everything is Illuminated. it's probably not that bad. it's probably more the fact that i have to read it, and i'm not enjoying it at all, so it's very off-putting.
i bought a new book today called The Byron Journals. it's by an aussie author and only came out a few days ago. it's set in australia too. the guy goes from adelaide to byron bay for schoolies and gets enveloped by the freedom and sex and drugs of the byron lifestyle. kind of coming-of-age. looking forward to it.
I finished Leaving Las Vegas last night. Way too late into the night. And thanks to that book I now am running on about 4 hours sleep. But yeah, beautifully written. Depressing and sad, but definitely worth the read.
Today I am going to start Transubstantiate. Somebody recommended I give it a shot. I don't know though. Anybody hear of this book before?
I've met the author. He puts away more BBQ than I humanly thought possible.
Currently 50 pages through Super Sad True Love Story. It's pretty much brilliant so far.
Mirka's reading that one right now too. I believe that's the one she's leading the discussion for.
I'm exited to read that one too.

This video pretty much sold the book. Gary's a crazy motherfucker.
That video was pretty sweet. I can't believe they got McInerney to be in it. Along with your hero.

Anna Karenina. It's about time.
