April Fools and I am reading
I have just started The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.
I have just finished "boquitas pintadas" by Manuel Puig. Great book
And I continue reading "House of Leaves"
finishing up Revolutionary Road... meh, it's ok but not great and you can totally see the movie to get the full effect... then on to 3 Musketeers after that for book club
"I thought I had mono once for an entire year. Turns out I was just really bored."

I just finished Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and now I am into Northanger Abbey. My other reads so far this month were Confederacy of Dunces and White Teeth.
"I'm glad I live in the GPS era. In a different century, I would've set off to visit the other side of the village and wandered off into the mountains and been eaten by a carnivorous plant. Or discovered the Americas."

Finished 2666 recently (which was great), now I'm reading Lolita by Nabokov and finishing off The Castle by Kafka. Got a few others to get started on after those two (can't wait to get started on Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid On Earth).
Next up is another book for the Galway Literature Festival, Neherland by Joseph O'Neill.
The Hawking's one crazy read.
Let me know how On the Origin is, I kinda wanna read it, cause, it's effing on the origin of species, but at the same time, I imagine it's quite 'outdated', as far as facts go. I'm hoping there's an updated version that says, 'this is inaccurate, blah blah, but yeah'.
Red The Metamorphasis by Kafka. Someone please tell me I missed something, and it's not really about a guy turning into a bug.
Now reading 1984...I think it's kinda dull, but important. Also Tractatus Logico Philosophicus by Ludwig Wittgenstein.
"They sold you hippies grunge, hip hop, now liberty activism."
i just started 'wasteland' by francesca lia block and it's pretty much amazing. she's great at describing love and weird infatuations, it's a really sad and poetic read. short too, like 100 pages. it's way better than anything else i've read by her.

I just got a bug up my ass to learn more about particle physics recently, however, that is conflicted by it's complete lack of use to me.
More on lack of use, I think I'm going to take more of a break on Darwin, old english gets to me - however, for an updated read check out "The Making of the Fittest" by Sean Carroll, "The Selfish Gene" by Dawkins (quite dull), or I also have some of Carl Zimmer's book on my shelf waiting to be read.
Metamorphosis sucked - that's all you need to know.
Think for yourself. Question Authority.
Ive temporarily given up on Netherland by Joseph O'Neill. He is in Galway Tuesday night doing a reading but I couldnt be arsed going to see after struggling halfway through his book.
Next for me is The Lie by Chad Kultgen.
I just finished Watchmen and I was quite blown away. I've never read a graphic novel before, and I didn't think I would be into but I could hardly put the book down. I loved it.
I'm about to read through The Dart League King, because my friend won't shut up about it...I've been meaning to read The Average American Male, since everyone I've spoken to about it has (generally) good things to say.
I'll also pick up Franny and Zooey, because of all the to-do about it around these parts.
Step back. Evaluate. Recognize.
Yeah it's pretty damn good, had you seen the film first? If you want more then The Dark Knight Returns is awesome, probably the closest to watchmen that I can think of.
I'm rereading Vurt, by Jeff Noon.
!
No, I haven't seen the movie yet. I wanted to read it before I saw the movie, but spent so much time procrastinating the book that now the movie isn't in theaters anymore.
Now I have to wait like 3 months until its on dvd..
Step back. Evaluate. Recognize.
Yeah, I think it's better to watch after reading the book. Maybe it'll get to some smaller cinemas later than the big ones, there's an arthouse cinema here that also shows mainstream films a few months after their released and it's showing Watchmen next month.
Also, if you're going to wait for the DVD it might be better to wait for a directors cut version. I reckon the first DVD release will be a straight-up theatrical cut, but then a little while later they'll release another version with the Black Freighter stuff included. Lord knows they need to squeeze as much money as possible out of the fans.
!

Both of these are book club books. You should definitely go here and discuss:

I tried to join the Book Club but it said "Access Denied"

Miks right about The Dark Knight Returns being good, but if you're interested in more comics, theres also some more ideas here and here. Pretty much anything by Alan Moore as a rule of thumb.
Just finished Franny and Zooey, started Q&A (Slumdog). Very different to the film, in a good way, so far.
edit: http://www.217babel.com/ is going to keep me entertained at lunchtime!
"What cha readin' fer??"
finished Revolutionary Road and on to 3 Musketeers... I have mid-level hopes for it so it should be smooth sailing.

Red The Metamorphasis by Kafka. Someone please tell me I missed something, and it's not really about a guy turning into a bug.
It is most definitely not about him turning into a bug. That would be like saying THE STRANGER is about murder.
Then what is it about? The alienation of being different? The expectations of others shaping you?

I am reading Fight Club

I reread Fight Club earlier in the month and really enjoyed it. Personally I had my head up my ass when I first read it so I enjoyed rereading it. I should do the same with Invisible Monsters, Choke and Survivor too.
I'm still reading Hitlerboken, it's very interesting. I'll also definitely be rereading Choke and Invisible Monsters in the near future.
It's about a lot of things. But an important point is that no one, not even Gregor, ever acknowledges his metamorphosis. He changes and not a single person ever asks why. Another important aspect is the outcome of all of this.
Why Men Love Bitches by someone whose name I can't remember.
This book makes me want to vomit in my mouth. But I'm going to finish it JUST so I can scorn it more thoroughly.
The Piano Teacher by Elfriede Jelinek. Almost finished it.

I don't know... Try again.
I just finished 'The Dart League King' by Keith Lee Morris.
I was really disappointed for the first 200 pages, then loved it for the next 69 pages, then hated it after the last page.
Step back. Evaluate. Recognize.
I'm mostly alternating between Life: A User's Manual by Georges Perec which is thoroughly enjoyable and quite intriguing and The Language Instinct by Steven Pinker which is fairly informative and a nice, entertaining read.
Reading Uranium: War, Energy and the Rock That Shaped the World by Tom Zoellner
Think for yourself. Question Authority.
I just bought Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, oh yeeaah!
the only thing that would make that better is if Christopher Walken did the audiobook.
The Curse of Jezebel by DeLeon Demicoli, a book of short stories by a fellow Cultie.
It is most definitely not about him turning into a bug. That would be like saying THE STRANGER is about murder.
lmao.
Picked up the Old Man and the Sea for the first time. Hopefully I dig it.
"My hopes lay shattered like a mirror on the floor
I see myself and I look really scattered
But I lived my broken dreams"

Never Let Me Go-by Kazuo Ishiguro
Now I'm getting into 'Lunar Park' by Bret Easton Ellis..
Good so far.
Step back. Evaluate. Recognize.
Good so far.
I read that book in a day. I just could not put it down.
Currently rereading Lullaby. It's been years since I read it and I've been meaning to reread it for a while now.
Also got a digital copy of The Idiot and put it on my phone. Been reading that one at work. I'm about halfway through it right now.
Good so far.
I read that book in a day. I just could not put it down.
I'm starting to feel like I read glacially slow. I've read for a good portion of today and am only like 150 pages in.

Agreed.

I picked up Carson McCullers' The Heart is a Lonely Hunter to read so I won't murder myself while reading Why Men Love Bitches.
Good so far.

I was reading like 2 books a week at that time. (Now I don't have the time to read that much.) But it was on a day off from work and I seriously only took breaks to go to the bathroom and eat.
My parents bought me books 'cause I passed my driving exam! Such a perfect gift, I'm very pleased with it.
They got me Twilight and Men Who Hate Women.
I know most of you have a distaste for Twilight, but I'm excited to find out what all the fuss is about.

I have a love/hate relationship with Twilight. It's not all that well-written, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't like crack while reading it.... and I hate myself for it.

Exactly.
I just finished Girl in Landscape by Jonathan Lethem, which means I am done with Lethem for the time being (I've read all his books in a row, except for You Don't Love Me Yet). I enjoyed Girl in Landscape, not my favorite of his but not my least favorite either.
As for what I'm reading next. It's a toss-up. Either The Mysteries of Pittsburgh by Michael Chabon, Lush Life by Richard Price, or Infected by Scott Sigler. I can't decide which, any suggestions?
I haven't read the Price, but I just read Mysteries not to long ago. It was good. It's a good book for summer.
Im starting The Sea Came In At Midnight by Steve Erickson. This is my second book by him after I got a recomendation for Zeroville here at the Cult.
I loved that book. I've read three of her books and that's the only one I liked at all, and I loved it. It's similar to The Mosquito Coast by Paul Theroux which is also amazing.

I'm thinking I might read some 217 Babel Street, it's a collection of stories by four different writers (I've only read the work of one - Jeff Noon). It's all online-
http://www.217babel.com/
This concept is really interesting. I checked out the site and the writing is good. I kept wanting to read and click. But I also kept feeling like I was missing something. I always feel like I'm missing something in the maze. But maybe that's the intrigue. And I still keep clicking and reading...
This probably deserves it's own thread.
