Hey there!  I'm lookin' for some good pieces of literature to entertain me for a six hour car ride.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I'm partial to Nabokov myself, but I'm willing to read anything that is reccommended to me.  Thanks a ton!

nabokov.. it's been a long while, such beautiful prose

steve erickson has remarkable prose and it's beautiful too, but his writing style is very different: his novels Rubicon Beach and Days Between Stations are favorites here

Dermaphoria by craig clevenger is beautiful written, especially for noir

I read ask the dust by John Fonte a few months back--not a very decent movie adapt, but the book possesses some flawless pages

if you want to be busy with a read for most of a week and enjoy your share of thrillers, pick up House of Leaves

welcome to the cult. look around, also check out the recommended author's page: maybe read hempel's anthology, or the phineas poe trilogy

Well, I was going to say Kazuo Ishiguro's Artist of the Floating World, but to get the most out of it, I needed more seclusion and silence than a car ride would offer.

So, I have to say Fury, by Salman Rushdie.
I can't help but giggle at his description of EVERYTHING.

Kiss Me Judas by Will Christopher Baer is great, its the first in a superb trilogy.

I second Kiss Me, Judas. Great book; great trilogy.

Also, you might try American Gods by Neil Gaiman. People seem to love him or hate him, but in either event, the action arcs across the country in the form of a bizarre road trip, and roadside attractions take on special meaning. Seems fitting, no?
