American Psycho
I just finished reading this for the second time and I am curious if anyone else enjoyed this book and what your thoughts on it are. I personally really enjoyed the book after the kind of slow opening. What I am most curious about is the focus on clothing when describing people in the story. What do you think this is supposed to mean? Is it how he personally views others or is it basically social commentary pointing out that we as Americans are obsessed with material objects and status symbols? Do you think Pat Bateman represents something bigger, or is this just the story of a creepy murderous sexual deviant psychopath? Do you think he was caught after the story ends? What are your thoughts on this excellent book?
I don't think he actually committed the murders/rapes. I think he just thought it all up, quite graphically. And Pete's right, it's satire about the materialistic 1980s.
Why are they doing a remake of a perfectly good movie, that only came out less than 15 years ago? And they're updating it to current times, which is stupid because they whole damn book was about the 80s. I should make a thread where I just rant about Hollywood.
I may have to read it again. It took me forever to get into the book in the first place because it was like 200 pages of describing designer 80's outfits. Another thing, what was up with the uzi at the gym and the estranged gay hispanic lover? There were some random unexplained things that kept popping up in the story. Do you like Easton's other books? I recently read Less Than Zero but it was kind of boring, it was mostly about some rich hollywood kid doing coke, nailing everyone, and complaining.
I've only read Glamorama. I liked it. It was the same with in depth descriptions of accessories and material crap, and then not knowing what was really had happened etc. It's just a social commentary on the (in this book, modelling) world.
It's just Ellis's schtick.
This is why we can't have nice things.
huh
I think the books is a lot better if you read it as an all-out comedy, with, like, Will Farrell as Bateman.
And it pains me to say that because I hate Will Farrell.
Christian Bale: First Bateman, then Batman! I feel like such a waterhead for just now making that connection! oofta
It really is a hilarious book. The part where he and his business associates (I hesitate to call them his friends) spend an entire chapter on the phone with each other trying to arrange dinner meeting is one of the funniest things I've ever read.
And I look forward to the remake, especially if they get Miles Fisher to play Bateman.

I like that music video way more than the movie it blatantly rips off.

The book is a social satire. Ellis is making fun of us basically.
The only thing important is social status and material positions. With enough money and friends, you can get away with anything.
