100 novels, all-time
Time magazine published their list of the greatest English language novels. Check it out.
I was surprised to see a couple of these books made the list, such as The Corrections, and Never Let Me Go, only because it came out this year. A majority of the others I recognized weren't surprising to see on the list.
I'm happy to see The Watchmen made the list. The story is truly amazing for a comic book and is better than some novels I've read.
What do you guys think? Is this a pretty safe list or do you think Time let some trash into the spotlight?
Some good books on that list. But they aren't all American. It's English-speaking novels. I'm glad to see that CS Lewis made it with The Lion, the Witch, amd the Wardrobe. Awesome books - the whole series.
I never heard of a lot of them so I wouldn't know if they were trash.
Dashiell Hammett !! Woo-hoo !!

Saw some good reads on there. Lots of golden classics such as Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange" and George Orwell's "1984" or "Animal Farm". Good stuff.
i've only read 4 of them. does this mean i'm uncultured?
No, it means we've got plenty of cool books to look forward to.
I've read about 14 of those (I lost count!), they're mostly books that I don't much care to bother with.
Some books I didn't like that were on there were Wide Sargasso Sea, Herzog and Neuromancer. Joan Didion's Play it As it Lays was on there, but I was surprised to see it there. I enjoyed that book. It is cool that the Watchmen was on there. I don't dig William Gibson but I appreciate that they included genre novels. Same goes with Raymond Chandler. But nice list. A lot more to read.
I really liked Herzog. These lists are always bullshit anyway, this particular one was compiled by just two people and it seems heavily biased towards American works.
Additionally these are the hundred 'best' books from 1923 onwards, not of all time like the thread title says, the All-Time on the webpage refers to the magazine. Time.
White Noise is on there?
That book is still sitting on my shelf.
i bought i with about five other books all at once and so i never got past the first ten pages because it was not interesting enough to keep me from starting another new one.
maybe i'll give it another try, but as Vendetta pointed out, it's not like this list should be completed trusted as the best list there is.
how about a 'best 100 list's of the 100 best books' ever article? then you could cross-reference and... i don't know where i'm going with this.
Woah! I loved White Noise, it was just so well written and comforting somehow. I bought it for my boyfriend, I was going to give it to him the next day so I managed to finish it in an evening. I meant to just look at the first chapter or so, to get a feel of it, but it hooked me and reeled me in. You must give it a fair trial!
I was surprised to see Their Eyes Were Watching God on there. It's not such a remarkable work in my opinion.
i read 7 and watched 3.
i'm glad to see clockwork orange on the list. that book is what got me to start reading recreationally.
White Noise, Catch 22, Watchmen, Ubik, The Lord of The Flies, Slaughterhouse-Five, Neuromancer, On The Road. These I own and have read and enjoyed. A Clockwork Orange sits waiting to be looked over though on my shelf. I was surprised to see Alan Moore's Watchmen up there, it being a graphic novel. It truly is a amazing graphic novel that hits subjects in the comic field and has tested the age of time and is truly amazing still after 20 years.
Phlip K. Dick was the one that got me into reading heavily again and starting a path towards writing.

Agreed. As for the thread title: oops.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. What... Lolita? The only non-American book on the list?

Oh there's a fair few English novels in there, Graham Greene and Virginia Woolf, couple of others. But still....BIASED.
Yeah it is, stop the presses!
Iv'e read exactly thirty of those books and all of them except one are the only decent books on that list, i am way more read than any of you.
you're also ahead of most of us by just a few years.
Bastard! yes but i read them all before i was in my early twenties, i barely read anymore and when i do it ain't old stuff.
hehaha. Well, you definitely have me beat in the literary department.
Time magazine is like People magazine but with 'news".
Snob!
Actually, no. Look at it sometime. It's lurid!
I know and thats a dumb list anyway.
I figured without looking at it. A better list is the 100 banned library booklist.

Time magazine has a list for that?

No, but another source does! Hint 1:Google. Hint 2: Library
No, but another source does! Hint 1:Google. Hint 2: Library
Thats too much like detective work.
hehaha. Well, you definitely have me beat in the literary department.
Maybe but i barely remember any on those books and i have no doubt some of them had an adverse effect on my youth, for example On the Road turned me into a teenage hitchiker, and after reading Naked Lunch i wasted many saturday nights in search of anal mucus, (what is it man, anyone know?), you know so it ain't know thing really.
Anal Mucus...I've never heard of that. Is that some sort of nasty shit where the wipe is all gooey or something. I'm just running with this....heheh..running.
!
Hmmm not bad I've read 18 of them but there is only about 10 more I have any interest in.

i've only read 4 of them. does this mean i'm uncultured?
