burning down barnes and noble
so i went to get fugitives and refugees yesterday (belated because im an idiot) and it took me about 20 minutes to find it. maybe its just me, but when there is a table that says "new books" i would imagine that chuck's new book would be right there, but it wasn't. i frantically searched the store with no luck and the more time passed my worries grew; had they not gotten it yet? why don't they have a huge display dedicated to him? what the fuck is going on here??? i was ready to burn down the place after a woman pointed me toward the travel section still with no luck. i found another employee who brought me over to the travel section again where i did indeed find the book finally.
I'm not sure if I am pissed at the store for not putting it with the rest of his books or at Chuck for not just writing "fiction" on the side to make it easier to find (im not actually pissed at chuck). i am mad that they didnt have it upfront; they did have a huge display for Harry Potter which is bullshit if you ask me. i was in a borders later and they had the book with the rest of Chuck's books but they also didn't have it up front either so they suck too.
did anyone else have this problem?
Face it, Harry sells more books than Chuck. Totally wrong for them to have it in with the rest of his books (unless this was a special section devoted to him...), being non fiction and all. My B&N had a table for it, plus extra copies in the "Literary Travel Section" - never heard of such a thing before, but then, I don't normally buy travel books...
I had the exact same experience, complete with extreme anger and stuff.
There is hope, but not for us.
Extreme anger and stuff? Whats up with you people? How can it be that hard to find a book when you know how to spell the authors name?
Heh. I walked right in and asked for it by name!
Mirkah, although I know how to spell the author's name
, it was frustrating because I had to go to 4 different bookstores before I found one with F&R on its shelves. It wasn't a matter of finding the right section; it was a matter of finding the right store.
There is hope, but not for us.
Than you did not have the "same exact experience" as Jesserogers and your original post was misleading
I agree with Mirkah on this one. I've seen so many Cult Members type the same post, acting like they were shocked that a non-ficton Travel book wasn't on the Fiction shelf with Chuck's other books. Why would it be!?
Wanna have the pants scared off you in 90 seconds?

also you have to realize, these bookstores get in a lot of new releases. if they were all just sitting there on a table, the store would just be disorganized. and tuffy's right, chuck's not a high volume seller, unlike j.k. rowling or sue grafton.
Mine should get here today, but I went to barnes and noble last night just to read a little of it. I read the first chapter, maybe introduction, I dunno. But I am a little surprised they didn't have it on the new release table because Lullaby was on it when it came out. But it's so tiny! Not nearly enough to satisfy me until Diary comes out, which will be read in a matter of hours too.
This isn't fair. I want these books to last
That's my only real gripe with Chuck's work. They're such fast reads I never feel satisifed. I must always, always have more.

See? We need more Cultists working in bookstore making sure Chuck's books get prime positioning.
I had a hard time finding it too, I had to call all over town. Mostly people said they had "seen" it but now couldn't "find" it. I mentioned Crown Travel Series, etc., but to no avail. I did finally find a copy--

Hey Jordie,
just curious where in the SF/Bay Area do you live? I lived in SF for a couple of years and in Oakland for several. The thing I miss the most besides pretty much everything are the great bookstores.
Did you go to any of the readings there for Choke or Lullaby. I went to few.
Hi Mirkah, I live in Marin.
Only recently having gotten into Chuck's works, I didn't go to any of his earlier readings.

Whereabouts in California are you now?

it's standard author categorization.

Los Angeles but I'm in negotiating a move back up North.
Too bad about missing the last readings but I'm sure there will be a whole slew of readings in the Bay Area for Diary. I'll be in town for those with my SF/Oaktown Posse of Chuck chicks. Maybe we can all meet up. There are always tons of hot guys at those things if you're looking
Wow, a whole posse, just for you? How'd that happen? Nevermind, I don't want to know.
I noticed a reading at Cody's, and somewhere in the city. Probably somewhere else, I didn't look that closely. Nowhere in Marin though...
The one big independent bookstore in Marin is very into not-Chuck-type authors, I have notices. Like very political third world authors with a million agendas, literary fiction of 10,000 pages, etc etc.

I'm female. Now my previous post probably makes more sense
Ohhhh... yes it does make more sense now.... {smacks forehead}
I hear his readings are always packed though. How early do you have to get there, to have a prayer of getting in? Like two hours early or something?? I would love to see him but...

hahaha, you thought I was hitting on you
An hour early is what I found works if you want a seat. Its no big deal if you like to read. You just sit there and read while you wait. Its really worth it. He's just hilarious in person. He tells a lot of stories. Its not just an excerpt and Q&A.
That is pretty funny... you must have wondered what the hell I was getting at...
Yeah, I should go to a reading. I bet he's hysterical.

just in case anybody took my "burning down Barnes and Noble" as literal i just wanted to say that i'm completely kidding. didnt want people to think i was some ill-tempered shut-in who spent his free time carvig chuck's name into my arm.
i was kinda disappointed, actually, i thought you were guaging interest for a field trip.

I paid for it at work. 40% off (mediaplay) and I bought it the day it came out, no problem whatsoever.

Thank you. Thank you! It really is that easy.
My Barnes and Nobles didn't have a table for F&R last time I went there(a week ago), but it did have one for Lullaby...

i know this is a bit overdue, but just came across this thread again. what zaki posted is so incrediblly true, especially what's in bold. no matter where you are, just suck up your pride and ask someone. that's what their job there is. if you can see the person, their main job is customer service, in other words, to help you when you need/want it.
just ask.
I always ask someone, as soon as I enter the store if I want a book and I know which one I go to those little information tables and ask "do you have the new BLA BLA book?". Usually they tell me.
I actually found a signed copy of the Portland book in Barnes and Nobles in new york, I found it were I expected to find it, in the travel guide section.

You have been folowing me. It just seems so appropriate. Whenever I think of peopel whining over stupid trivial or blown out of proportion bullshit (BOOPB... like Boob with a p) I hear that song in my head.

Hey - I had my local bookstore St John's Bookseller custom order me two copies five minutes after I heard about this book in a dive bar in the St John's neighborhood of Portland...and I love it! Support your independant local bookstores!!!

Why would fiction be listed on the side of a non fiction book? Why couldn't you find it in the Travel section the first time you looked?
