Subcommittee OKs college playoff bill
WASHINGTON -- A House subcommittee approved legislation Wednesday aimed at forcing college football to switch to a playoff system to determine a national champion, over the objections of some lawmakers who said Congress had more pressing matters on its plate.
The bill, which faces long odds of becoming law, would ban the promotion of a postseason NCAA Division I football game as a national championship unless that title contest is the result of a playoff. The measure passed by voice vote in a House Energy and Commerce Committee subcommittee, with one audible "no," from Rep. John Barrow, D-Ga.
"With all due respect, I really think we have more important things to spend our time on," Barrow said before the vote, although he stressed he didn't like the current Bowl Championship Series, either.
There's a democrat from Georgia?!
I'm so glad I chose to open this thread. I was expecting something aimed at me about how government just saved babies from gangs of AIDS-ridden pedophiles junkies. I was delighted to find Monkey embraced sarcasticism, demonstrating how there is more statistically wrong with gov't than normal people interacting in a flip of a coin scenario.
And gov't hasn't saved babies from AIDS-ridden pedophile junkies in a while now. I think we're getting ripped off...

This post makes no sense to me.
YES! This is important b/c small schools like Boise State, Cincinnati, and TCU have been getting screwed over by the BCS. Even though they statistically deserve national title shots, big name schools like Texas and Florida get the nod instead because they generate more revenue. Treating college athletics like a business first and a competition second is complete bullshit. Boise State has had several undefeated seasons but never a chance to prove themselves as national champions because it's not a big-money market. It may seem like a waste of congressional time, but it really isn't. If Cincinnati would have gone to a national championship this year, for example, a lot of the money generated from the game would go toward improving the school's athletic program, which would in turn help the local economy. Texas is such a big name football school that the money they haul in is unlikely to do anything but pad the university's already fat pockets. Not to mention Cincinnati may lose their amazing coach b/c Notre Dame can afford to throw ridiculous amounts of money at him, which definitely wouldn't be the case if they were in a championship game this year.
I understand why those who don't follow college football may see this as a waste of time, but the BCS is run like a business, not the colligate organization it's supposed to be. Federal intervention is the only way to remedy the situation. And I thought Obama was joking when he mentioned this last year. This is almost as awesome as seeing Tim Tebow cry like a baby after losing to Alabama.

No, seriously, this is a big fucking waste of time. Let's see, we have two wars/conflicts, a ginormous deficit, 10% unemployment, and a healthcare debate that is affecting a massive amount of people, and college football is important? GTFO!
Fucking waaaaaste of time, and I'm from Nebraska. I despise the university system for the money it's poured into our football team while cutting our veterinary program. That's fucking right. In a state where there are more cattle than human beings, we have to send our vet postgrads to Kansas.
We are in a two front war, facing a healthcare crisis, and they're dicking around about football? Are they serious? This pisses me off.
The last line of that article made me laugh.
There is hope, but not for us.
It has nothing to do with the necessity of a college football playoff (something I've wanted to see since forever, and really, it could be done with ONE extra bowl game. Just take the top four BCS teams, play two bowl games, the winner of those play each other for the title).
CONGRESS has no business getting involved in this. This has little to no effect on the day-to-day running of national government, nor do the majority of aamericans give two shits about who the champs are. All it does is stop the four weeks of whining that come in January (boo-hoo we were undefeated and weren't properly ranked strength of schedule my ass blahblahblah).
This is why I hate college sports.
You really think congress spends the majority of their time debating these issues? Even if they did, it matters less what they spend their time debating about and more what legislation they actually enact. The BCS bowl system negatively affects college tuition rates by screwing small schools out of money their athletic programs deserve. It's a system of have and have-nots as far as universities are concerned. This affects far more than just college athletes and college football fans, it affects communities and the financial stability of universities.

This is what I hate about America. We think that higher education should be a private business and the government should keep its nose out of things. I'd like to see the federal government MORE involved in higher education.

College Football is not 'higher education'. You're right, they do need to get more involved, to enhance the system. But not by fucking around with the football system.

I was expecting to find a post about gov't doing good in general (oxymoron, I know) and so it would be like something I would post, but the opposite, and when it was like something I would post (something showing how bad govt is) I was happy.
Make sense?

Didn't this whole mess start LAST YEAR because the guy has a hard on for UT and was pissed they lost out in the whole 3 way tie in the Big 12 South business?
It's good to see it took an entire freaking year to write legislation that wasn't even aimed at helping small schools in the first place. TCU, Boise, Cincinnati--prepare to continue to be screwed in every possible way.
Pay no attention to me, I went to Texas A&M.
You'll need to see a healthcare provider to find out if christipants is right for you. If you're a man who uses nitrate drugs, like nitroglycerine (drugs commonly used for the treatment of chest pains), never take christipants. Your blood pressure could suddenly drop to an unsafe or life-threatening level. christipants must never be used by men taking nitrates of any kind, any time. Other medications may interact with christipants and change the way christipants works. Like many medications, your healthcare provider may have to adjust your initial christipants dosage if it doesn't produce the desired results or you're bothered by side effects. -monkeywright

What is it that government runs that it makes work better than it does by itself in the marketplace? The only thing I can think of is mass murder/war.

Yeah, sorta, but I trust you know what you're talking about.
Now if only congress could determine how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop we'd be aces.
