Well, I don't really know, but what I'd like to happen is reincarnation. There's just too much stuff to do here, too many things to experience to get it all in one trip. As crappy as this place is, I hope I get to come back over and over again.

if i were to be reincarnated (though just the thought makes me kinda angry) i'd like to be a housecat. that would rock.

i hope it's like it was before i came into existence, i think we at least deserve that. I'm with insomnomaniac, i find living another life unbearable... dunno why.

if you believe in heaven, you'll go to heaven.
if you think you're going to hell, you'll go to hell.
if you think you should be reincarnated, then you probably will be.
if you believe that you will be tossed in a hole in the ground and slowly decay until nothing is left, and thats it...
if you think a spaceship will come and take you (your soul?) back to your home planet where you will resume your joy filled and carefree existance...

in my opinion, whatever you believe in, thats what will happen.
either that or you will be taken into a large lecture hall and spend all of eternity listening to people talk about how religion was originally just peoples explanation for things they dont understand, a major one being death, but then eventually organized religion became a very effective method of controlling the masses, because the people in charge could just say "if you dont do as we say, you will spend eternity living out your worst case scenarios" and also, "even if your life sucks now, you should try to change it for the better, because eventually you'll die and go to a happy place anyway, so just give up and accept your fate"

And it's kind of comforting. The thought of eternity is scary. Seriously, it's about the most absolutely frightening concept I've ever encountered. Just think about it for a moment, sends chills down my spine. Or maybe it's just me.

Just watched [i]Waking Life[/i] last night, and the eternal dream state sounds remotely feasible. Typically, though, I've gone with the return to nothingness/everything idea, maybe a reincarnation in the sense of skipping a groove to the closest track.

I'll keep an open mind until I find out (agnostic in that sense, I guess).

What would be great, is when you die, you're still the same person you were on earth (i like my life) but you never have to die. Like you could spend all kinds of time doing whatever you wanted, w/out the deadline crap of this world. Spending time w/ people who've already died would be great for me. And since I'm sure nobody really would want to be, in a sense, 'immortal', you could "sleep" for however long you wanted to and just be nothing

This isn't what I think will happen, just what would be nice for me.

There is a Japanese movie called "Afterlife" which is about the departed getting to choose one memory from their life to relive for all eternity. I don't believe this, but its an interesting idea for a movie.

nope. it's to pay the toll across the river Styx or whatever the name of the river was. Started back in the days of the greeks I believe and eventually found it's way into Ireland.

but also to keep the eyes closed. i mean there's a difference between the mythology behind something over time and its actual original purpose.

Nope, I don't believe it has anything to do with keeping the eyes closed. It might have more to do with the "eyes are the window to the soul" therefore that's the way in? I don't know, I'm making that logic up.
I think the boatkeeper is named "Charon," and the river is either Styx or Acheron.

[B]Ferryman of the Dead[/B]

Charon was the old ferryman who brought the dead across the river Acheron to Hades. He was the son of Erebus and Nyx usually depicted as an old (sometimes skeletal) man. The way his whole deal worked goes like this. Hermes would bring the souls of the dead to Charon. Charon would then open his hand to the dead requiring the obol (a coin) that is given to all those who received a proper burial or burning. Normally this coin was placed in the mouth of the dead. Those souls who do not have the coin are made to roam around the river Cocytus for most of their afterlife and are not granted passage to Hades. The living were also allowed visiting passage to Hades if they brought to Charon golden bough.

Hades is also the name of the world of which he rules made up of two regions: Erebus and Tartarus. Erebus is the region where the dead go after passing and Tartarus is the lowest region where the Titans were vanquished and imprisoned forever. As you can imagine, Hades was a dark, gloomy, nightmarish place. The gate to hades was guarded by the three headed demonic dog, Cerberus. The underworld was said to be seperated from the world of the living by five rivers: Acheron, Cocytus, Phlegethon, Lethe, and Styx.

[B]Acheron[/B] - The word Acheron itself means the "river of woe". A fitting name indeed for this river. This is the river that the old ferryman Charon ferried the dead across from the land of the living to the realm of Hades.

[B]Cocytus[/B] - The word Cocytus means "river of lamentation". Those who died and were not properly buried were stuck walking about the banks of this river for most of their afterlife.

[B]Phlegethon[/B] - This was the river of fire in Hades. It's said that while the fire burned, it did not consume anything within it's flames.

[B]Lethe[/B] - The word Lethe means "forgetfulness". This is the river where the dead had to drink from to completely forget about their lives on Earth.

[B]Styx[/B] - Probably the most famous of the five lakes. The word Styx means "hate". This is the actual river that seperates the land of the living from the realm of the dead. Many accounts say that it wraps around Hades nine times. The river was also a sacred place to both gods and men. Those who broke any oath made upon the river Styx, were made to drink from it by Zeus. By doing this, it made the drinker lose their voice for long period of time.

I don't think anybody's really disputing whether or not there was an actual legend like this. Thanks for the lowdown though, Paggy. I think all Kitty is saying is that there was an actual purpose for copper on the eyes and then the legend followed. Kinda like various stories you're told for thunder and lightning when you're a little kid. I dunno. I've seen people's eyes stay closed without the help of pennies, but I haven't seen too many dead bodies.

I know nobody was disputing whether or not it existed. Perhaps my ending line was a little vague. I wanted to find out the rivers name, and I enjoyed looking for it. I didn't intend to imply that there was a doubt about which nobody researched, and I'm sorry if I did.
