What's Your Poison?
I'm not sure why we don't already have a cocktail thread, but it occured to me yesterday, once the pile of shot glasses and tumblers had been cleared away, that I love trying new drinks, and could definitely use some suggestions.
Current favorite,
Blueberry press: Blueberry Stoli, Tonic, Lime Juice.
Vegas Bomb: Crown Royal, Peach Schnapps, Red Bull (drop shot)
I also tried Kraken rum yesterday. Delicious.

When it comes to drinks, I'm pretty simple. A glass of bourbon with a shot of coke in it. Preferably Old Charter, despite the fact that I get made fun of for drinking an "old man drink," but whatev. It's just enough bitter and just enough sweet.
I quit drinking for a little bit but I recently started back up. I have been keeping away from beer only because I consume way too many, way to fast and that lead to too many problems. I have replaced beer with vodka. I have either been drinking Absolut Vanilla with Coke or Absolut Citron and tonic. Both relatively unmanly drinks, but I like them. I can nurse these drinks a little better and not get drunk.

I've recently been more fond of more refreshing drinks, like the Press, or just drinks with tonic in general.
The way I look at it, Frank, is that drinks are a-sexual. If I enjoy drinking something, who cares what sort of stereotype it has? Anyway, anyone who says they like the taste of straight liquor has either been drinking it FOREVER and they aquired the taste, or they're lying. Mixed drinks aren't for girls, they're for people who aren't fucking Irish. Or a pirate.

I usually order Manhattans up, made with Sazerack rye whiskey if it's available, lemon peel, not a cherry. If that rye isn't available, I'll get Jack Daniels instead for the Manhattan. That or vodka tonic. Usually, I just have a glass of wine though, rarely cocktails.
Goodanya for the banning of cherries!
I really hate mariscino cherries. Or however you spell that. I remember reading somewhere that there's enough dye in small jar of those things to kill a rabbit or a rat or something. Ever since then I was like, HOLD THE MURDEROUS CHERRY!

Those are horrible. Not to be too fancy, but most of the nicer places don't use those, but house pickled(?) cherries. I still prefer the lemon peel taste. I think it's living in the Bay Area, such a foodie place that even the cherries are prepared in-house.

They're bottled in Formaldehyde, which is what dead bodies are soaked in.

i can't drink for medical reasons, but i do collect bottles with awesome artwork. that run looks AWESOME. love to have that on my shelf.

Cherry Tomatoes too.
The best heirloom cherry tomatoes I have EVER smelt, tasted, fondled, were at a restaurant in Oakland. No...wait..it was Berkeley, I think.

Glad I'm not the only one that collects cool bottles! This is my newest one.

It's Crystal Head Vodka. Not bad tasting, but the bottle was totally worth it!

i honestly can't drink manhattans, i've tried. maybe i haven't been drinking long enough or something. but i do love a good martini, my brother makes the best ones. he makes them with a great flavor but they're still pretty stout. i feel like a man when i'm drinking them.
but when i go out drinking, i like tequila drinks the best, especially margaritas if they're made well. there's this one drink i used to get at this one bar but they stopped making it. it was monster, sauza tequila, and gran marnier. now that was a potent drink. but most places don't carry monsters, only red bull. another staple is 3 Olives Cherry Vodka and red bull. those are great, the flavors really compliment each other.
If you like the cherry/vodka combination, try:
2 pts 3 Olives Grape vodka, 1 part 7 up or plain soda, and a dash of grenadine. So delicious.
I definitely like martinis, but I'm a stickler for the classic gin/vermouth recipe. Fuck vodka. Extra olives. I went to one place that served them with onion-stuffed olives, which was actually pretty good, although I suggest a mint after...
Speaking of martinis, I've been wanting to try the drink Daniel Craig's Bond has in Casino royal, instead of his classic "shaken, not stirred", but I never think of it when I'm out.
Margarita, rocks, no salt, hint of orange/pineapple juice...perfection.

Some people find Manhattans too sweet. I like the pretty amber color of the drink, the shape of the glass and the taste. I like martini's made with a splash of olive juice. Is that a 'dirty martini'?
Oops, I spelled Sazerac rye wrong up there^^.
i think the more olive juice, the "dirtier" it is. but yeah, i think it was the sweetness of the manhattan that put me off. it made it taste much stronger than it actually was i think. my sister in law loves manhattans though. gin is my enemy though, i'm more of a vodka man. i only have bad experiences when it comes to gin.
My current favorite, which I brought back from the DR by the ton, is Mamma Juana (had a hard time explaining that one to the customs agents), a potent combination of different wood barks stepped in 2 parts honey, 3 parts red wine, 3 parts Brugal.
Es muy cheapy, cheapy.
I am not a drinker, but I did enjoy Mama Juana when I visited Punta Cana. They kept shoving them at me (the benefits of an all-inclusive resort) "Ees Dominican Viagra! Ees good!"
That stuff sounds delicious. I really want some.

I once had a coffee mojito and it was perfect. Perfect. I've never been able to replicate it.

I think hot alcoholic beverages are underrated. I love White Monks, and my favorite snowboarding beverage is heated rum shaken with apple cider mix.
"...you want to be truly unselfish? Love someone or die for someone. Those are the only good deeds you can perform without any hope of personal gain."
When I'm sick, I like to drink hot water with whiskey, honey and lemon. It makes me feel old fashioned. I think I read about it as a kid in some book about pioneers that I was so crazy about.
My sister did that for halloween. 'twas good.

I remember someone telling me that alcohol kill viruses or whatever and you should take shots when you're coming down with a cold. End result: Puking everywhere, coughing, the worst headache ever, and busted immune system. I lived on my bathroom floor for a twenty four hour period. of. Hell.

Pretty sure we have a couple.

Yeah, no. I think the small amount of whiskey helps me sleep, and the heat is very soothing.
I'm seeing all of these sweet-ass drinks and it's making me sick to my stomach. I can't stand fruity or ultra sweet stuff. Just gimme mah bourbon.
Pretty sure we have a couple.
That was my first thought.
Anyway...
White Russians. All the way.
The other night though I ended up drinking a few Mojitos and Pina Coladas at some cocktail bar happy hour. I say ended up, I actually mean started off the night with.
Pretty sure we have a couple.
That was my first thought.
I sincerely apologize for making you both suffer through an extraneous thread. The nerve of me!!!
P.S. I love pina coladas.

You live in the Bay Area?! I was just there a couple of months ago, I should have visited you! I had no idea!

oh shit, yes, I do! I would have loved to meet you. Ross lives here too and somehow we've yet to meet.
I drove out there last October! It's okay, though, I didn't get to meet Monkeyman in L.A., either, so it was a general FAIL on meeting Culties. THOUGH I DID SEE JANE YAYAYAYAYAYYYYY!
Which part do you live in?
Anyway, anymore I can only drink dark liquor. Beer gets me bloated before drunk (hence, I don't really get drunk off of beer) and clear liquor, well... I've had some bad experiences. So it's whiskey and rum for me, all the way. Whiskeys, I haven't found a favorite, yet, but as for rum: Bermuda Black Seal with some lime, plz.
If you're a rum man, I strongly suggest the rum from my first post. It's smooth, very vanilla-y without being too sweet. It's strong, too. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I live in Oakland. I wish I'd known you were in town. Dammit. I'd like to meet Jane..was it on this past trip? Or before. Jane gets to meet everyone.
Beer feels me up almost like a food, so I don't drink it often.
It was last October, we stayed in Berkeley, but had to drive through a lot of Oakland to find alternate routes into S.F. when that support wire on the Bay Bridge snapped and began attacking cars.
And yeah, I've definitely seen the Kraken rum once and was very interested, but went for Sailor Jerry's for some reason (which is also very great, tastes like cherries).
Pretty sure we have a couple.

Now make a thread about how you've legally changed your name to Tyler Durden.

Sailor Jerry is decent. I'm not a huge cherry fan, but it wasn't overpowering. I'll have to try the Black Seal.

Oh whoa, what a shitty time to visit. That was crazy, I haven't been on the bridge, since. I know I'm going to have to get over that, but it freaks me out too much. Thank god for BART (subway).
I don't drink rum at all. I had my own unfortunate experience with it, and the smell makes me ill.
SF/Oakland/Berkeley is probably my fav. metropolitan area to be in. Even more than NY. Unfortunately I only get to see it twice a year.
douche
We should make a new meetup thread. I know it's early, but I actually want to get to go this year. New Orleans, plz.
We were on the bridge when it happened! Thankfully, we were heading back into Berkeley, so we were on the lower level. And then, when we found out, we couldn't stop conversing about how crazy it'd be if the wire hit a car with someone in it who had their hand out the window... instant severed limb! The BART is kinda silly, though, because what if you don't have any money on your card as you're trying to exit? Do they keep you in the station forevar??
P.S. Don't hate me, you guys, but I actually liked L.A. MUCH better than the Bay Area.
Jesus, you are lucky! People were trapped and rerouted for HOURS. It was a nightmare.
If you don't have money, you have to add it before exiting at one of those machines. If you don't I don't know, they probably give you a ticket and let you go. But I really have no idea.
P.S. Don't hate me, you guys, but I actually liked L.A. MUCH better than the Bay Area.
You're right. I do hate you. I'm originally from LA. I hate it so much. As Rollins would say "The Los Angeles, the city of stucco and whores"
Parts of Venice, Santa Monica, and Marina Del Rey are nice. But other than that...

That grateful dead drink. I don't go out much to drink, but three of those and I'm gone. I usually love my vodka and coke.

I concur. I was planning on going to New Orleans this summer, anyway.

Yes!! There was talk of going to NO last year, but Portland had the upper hand. People bitched about it being too hot down here for a meetup and said "maybe next year." But I don't know what the difference in temp would be from summer 2009 and summer 2010... Meh.
I go to Nola every year, too. I could make it.

Pansies. I've actually never been to one. I was supposed to go to the first one, in NYC, (huh, kinda like the first "Real World") but I couldn't make it.
