In Canada, there was a movement to change the name of the Christmas Tree, to the 'Holliday Tree'. Apparently the word Christmas is offensive to people of the non Christian faith. What ever, I don't think the movement lasted long anyway.

I am a huge supporter of freedom of speech. Anyone who impedes anyone else's freedom of speech and ultimately freedom of thought is an enemy of mine. Actually, i think that they censor out the god and jesus when used as expletives as to prevent offending christians and jews (they have the ten commandments too i think), because one of the ten commandments is not to take the lord's name in vain... political correctness solves nothing, merely covers it up.

I must admit, people seem to be a little oversensitive these days. There are more important things (war, economy, education, the health care crisis in America, etc..) to be worrying abour than silly name-calling schemes. However, the reason why there is sort of a double-standard is that African American were enslaved by white Americans and not vice versa. African Americans had to fight for civil rights, so because they have been treated like second-class citizens throughout the majority of America's history it is seen as less acceptable when you use a slur against them. I also wouldn't say that no one cares when someone says "fuck you jew." The Anti-defamation league makes sure of that. In my mind people have to fucking grow up and stop using slurs and whatnot to refer to people. It is cliche and unoriginal. Let's all use the brains that evolution was kind enough to let us have.

Hey, leonard, in the recommendations section on this website, you should check out "The Redneck Manifesto" (if you haven't already read it -- the way you're talking you might have) by Jim Goad. Mr. Goad is one man that certainly "knows what you mean." Chuck actually likes Jim's writing and I recognizes a Chuck-esque style in Mr. Goad's work. He makes so many great points, I can't simply sum them up here in a messageboard post, but it is a great book. As well as, Shit Magnet, also by Goad. The man uses words like goddamn bullets.

My point was this: When I was in grade school I was forced to pledge my allegiance to the flag. The flag represents our government (I don't see the need in the people pledging allegiance to the government, it is supposed to be the other way around, but that is a whole other topic) and not any religious deity that the particular government aligns itself with at the moment. We have all seen what governments who are gung-ho about religion are capable of. Now my point: If you are going to FORCE someone to say something and it conflicts with any religious beliefs you may have, then that contradicts the freedom of speech as well. If you want to pray to God or associate the goverment with some super-being in the privacy of your own home, thats all up to you. However, do not force school kids to associate government with God. It is an insult to God.

I understand your point. But the majority of people in the U.S. believe in God. The pledge of allegiance, I think, is supposed to represent the majority. And really, if people don't want to say "One nation under God", they can always pause or stop. I guess. But I agree that we shouldn't try to force a belief structure on people.

i'm confused by the malcom x thing. as interesting as it may be, i just don't get it. it isn't a fact, it's just islam or something. i guess it's okay to be intrigued by that and research it. i find it interesting, though, how people would beleive the red-yellow-blue, whatever ( in all respect, i just didn't feel like scrolling up to read it again) than believing little stories in the bible. i think as a metaphor or a tale of some sort, they make good "examples", but it sounds alittle too far fetched for me.
