Id snap in the military. I cannot stand people yelling at me. I become angered incredibly fast and would probably take a swing at the drill sergeant the first day. And ususally I am very mellow.

What kind of sense does it make for me to waste two precious years of my life serving 'the man' so to speak. How bout this, I take those two years, join the Peace Corps., and actually do something worthwhile. Instead of becoming a trained killing machine to wreak havoc on countries that piss our president off. Yeah, Peace Corps. sounds like a plan.

Killing people would be cool, but I'm not so sure about the whole
"dying" part of it.

Boot camp doesn't mean shit if there's a draft though. They don't
care if draftees survive or not.

Now THAT is bullshit. Everybody goes through boot camp, whether you're a draftee or not. I know a coupla guys who got drafted for Nam and they definitely went through camp.
Part of me thinks, yeah, that wouldn't be TOO bad of an idea, making military service mandatory. But then I think about how many people just won't want to do it. Already in this thread there have been far more negative responses to this proposition than positive. And if there are that many here, there have got to be plenty more out in the real world. How many times have you been forced to do something you didn't want to do? Everybody's done it, and I'm guessing nobody really put their heart and soul into it. Is that the kind of morale we want in our military? A bunch of people who don't want to be there so they're doing everything half-assed? I don't think so. Especially if I actually want to be there out on the front line, the last thing I want to worry about is whether the guy next to me is going to cover my ass. Chances are he isn't going to if he doesn't want to be there.

Yeah, and I think we should all have to do two years in prison as well. That will keep society in order. People will REALLY think twice about doing the crime if they already know what its like to do the time. And oh yeah, forced prayer in school.

midnightrider, you've got the right idea, but how about americorps? yeah other countries have problems, but we've got more than our fair share at home, in your own back yard, even.

The day the reinstitute the draft is the day I move to Canada. The government is MY employee. The government is supposed to work for me, not the other way around. A government OF the people FOR the people and BY the people.

Thanks moe and Fucko. As far as the avatar goes, gotta give credit over to twosmokingbarre, who made the thing for me. It's from a movie called Wendigo, if you care to check it out.

For the record, mandatory military service for all (as is done in many, many countries today) isn't a draft. A draft is a lottery where only a lucky percentage get chosen.

Just clarifying...

you know what's REALLY fucked up about the draft here in the states?

males of the appropriate ages living in this country are required to register even if they're not united states citizens.

I found this out from a former boyfriend who was a canadian citizen, but still had to register.

Or you could just not go down to the post office and fill out the card.

Not that I'm suggesting you do that... That would be illegal.

Ronald Regan's _first_ broken campaign promise: "If elected, i will act to reverse the legislation that will require young men to register for a potential draft." (Please note that this is not meant to be a direct quote...) Once elected, he never mentioned it again.

He also went 6 years without mentioning AIDS in public, and only did so after more than 25,000 people had died from it in America alone.

Uninteresting fact: AIDS was originally called GRID (Gay-Related Immune Deficiency).

Compulsory military service does wonders for destroying domestic "us versus them" attitudes. Everybody goes through the same shit, and everybody feels like they're on the same team. I'll bet Isrealis identify with and trust other Israelies much more than Americans trust each other. (Also, Israel's been under attack more or less since they were formed in the 1950s, which I would think would have a similar effect.)

Required service in the general military is a shitty idea, though. With an all-volutneer military, politicians have to convince a lot of people their cause is worth dying for before they have troops to send.

Maybe 2 years in the National Guard for everyone? I could possibly support that.

or ireland or france, or somewhere. there is no way i'm gonna be in the military. i'm not fighting these politicians stupid wars for them. no way. whatever twisted plot gets me out of it, i'd go, and probably end up taking quite a few people with me, because they agree.

Yeah, I'd be off to Ireland in a heartbeat.

First - I'm not dying for Imperialism. Sorry.
Second - I'm not a military type. I can't deal with authority well at all. If I don't feel like the person telling me what to do deserves their authority, I just can't listen to them. However, if they are good people and I feel like they deserve their position, I will completely respect them, but if they start telling me to do stupid shit that I don't see the point to... Well, I'm not going to do it. My ass they'll "make me do it". That's when I kill some fucker in his sleep. Not that I'm trying to act tough or anything, but it's not that difficult to kill someone, and I seriously would snap if inundated with too much bullshit.

However, I would enjoy being in the military for the fact that it's pretty much the ultimate test. That is, armed combat against other soldiers. And I think that would be awesome, just to see what I could do. (Not that I think I'd be really good at it, but just to see...)

Of course, that's rendered completely irrelevant thanks to reaons 1 & 2.

*Laughing Hysterically * I already live in Canada fuckers! Hahaha....

Seriously though. Mandatory service; bad idea. Think of all the time and money wasted tracking down and arresting those people who will inevitably skip their time. Think of all the men who are are not suited for war and would only become cannon fodder. Think of how it would increase the animostity a large portion of people already feel for the American government, furthering the cause of anarchy.

Really? Can't say I've noticed. Though of course you'd know more about life in my country than I would, what with you being a...no, I'm not even going to bother coming up with a decent insult. Just...shut up, ok? Trust me, the world will love you for it.
