Teaching myself to play
an instrument proved to be a completely futile endeavor...but that's alright, i'd rather be a lazy ass and stick to the internet anyways.
What's an instrument worth taking the time to master?

That's funny because the internet has made lessons obsolete. And any handheld instrument should be no problem learning with an open tab along side your usual routine set of browsing tabs.
Judging by your avatar being the cover for a Brand New album, you must've wanted to learn guitar. It gets pussy, right? It does, don't worry. It's not that hard if you don't want to learn chords, notes, or which strings go where. Just remember that the fifth fret is always the start of the next string down (except for the fourth string which successor starts on its fourth fret, then the pattern continues on the fifth fret like normal). Music is a funny thing. Girls like funny.

I used to play clarinet in grade school. Turns out, clarinet players don't get a lot of pussy.
Me too ! And, huh,... me neither.

You should join an amateur dart league.
piano. It's beautiful, so versatile
Years ago I got a guitar because my best friend was like a virtuoso on guitar.
I think I tinkered with it for a couple months and then gave up.
I'd like to play various drums but I have no rhythm.
I played the violin for a while as a kid, but I never got very good. Probably because I didn't practice very much. I know enough that I could probably pick it up and learn to play it well if I gave it a real shot, i can see myself doing it in my head, playing a violin, so I would probably remember and figure it out with minimal pain. Except I have forgotten how to read music. I'd have to re-teach myself that.
I'd like to play the cello too. Instead of the violin actually. That was the main reason I never put so much effort into the violin, as soon as I had it and had my lessons I realised it was the cello I was actually drawn to.
We were taught to play the recorders quite intricately at the school I went to in sixth and seventh grade. None of that hot cross buns and twinkle twinkle stuff, real performance worthy symphony type music, with bass alto and soprano instruments and others on strings and and flutes and drums and whatnot. So I can play the hell out of the recorder. That's right. Again, I'd have to relearn to read music, though.
When I get around to getting my piano out of storage in california and bringing it up here I might give a go at tinkering with it.
What I am saying is that if you were to put me in a symphony I'd probably be best on the Triangle.
I learned trumpet as a kid because it's one of the only instruments you can play with one hand.
If I didn't have CP I would have loved to learn piano, but now, I find myself drawn to drumming. Can't do that either though.
That's not a bad idea. You can look good while doing it, all of the notes are laid out in order. The only problem is it's hard to find the opportunity to play it for people just by chance. Also, for how douchey you'd look bringing a guitar to a party, wheeling a piano into one is a different matter.

The piano and the cello are my two favorite instruments. They're beautiful and everyone's always impressed by someone who can play them.
I used to play the French horn and also never got pussy.
Fuck you, french horn is awesome.

I used to feel sorry for the bassoon. It had the goofiest name and no one ever seemed to care about it.
also, my dad used to play the sousaphone when he was in high school marching band.
also also, my mom has a banjo. I could give that a whirl.

The open tuning of a banjo makes it seem like it'd be easier to play. Nope.

I love the piano and miss it. I know if I ever get a house I want a grand piano or an old ragtime piano. I'm not very good since I only took a few years of lessons and I'm not that musically inclined but I can make love to a piano when inspired.
I play guitar but I wish I'd learnt how to play the piano. It's too late to become Chopin2 so I will simply have to LIVE THROUGH MY CHILDREN.
I just gave one of my pianos away.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I guess it was silly to want to keep both of them.

Favorite post.
Yeah, i've had this acoustic laying around for a few months now just collecting dust so I thought I'd put it to good use.
That's what I had originally thought. I assumed that i'd just be able to open up a Youtube tutorial and then improvise from there. Just wing it after learning the basics, you know? After realizing that I couldn't even properly tune the guitar, it just sort of went downhill from there, ha. I guess it just takes some practice and a hell of a lot of patience. If anything, I could just resort to getting lessons from a professional.

I was forced into Percussion class last term...I don't think drums are my forte. Come to think of it, I should probably stay away from musical instruments altogether.
I was also taught recorder in grade school, but I never bothered to put any effort into learning it because I detested it so much. Music class was the existential equivalent of bad kerning to me. Then again, my school focused on teaching us how to play A Whole New World instead of anything worthwhile.
Relearning to read music was probably one of the most difficult obstacles I had to overcome in my music classes this year, but i'm definitely glad I did, very much worth the effort.

fortify?
You have to learn whatever instrument is right for you. Also, I hate to break it to you, but music isn't for everyone and you may not have that passion to master an instrument burning inside of you. I started with guitar and slaved away for like 4 hours a day, 7 days a week for years before I was even kind of happy with my ability. Since then, I've learned to play a bit of piano, bass, and violin. Piano will always be my favorite instrument, it is just perfectly eloquent. Sorry for the rambling- the point is that if you want to play an instrument, you will know which and you'll do it. If you aren't driven, either because you think you want to learn or your friends play or whatever, you might not want to waste your time or money. Sorry if this comes off negatively, I don't mean to sound like a dick.
Step back. Evaluate. Recognize.
In the end it's all patterns. With anything. If you just make noise patterns, you'll learn it in a fairly clumsy way. Anybody that wants to self learn has the whole internet at their disposal. Then again tablature is more of a hindrance than a helper. Unless it's tab for finger placement for chords.

I don't think my interest is intrinsic. Maybe that is the problem, it's more of a hobby I wanted to pick up because I thought it might be fun to learn. I don't ever intend on becoming a musician because I know that a lot of it is also passion and dedication, which I don't really have when it comes to that. I've just always wanted to learn various instruments because it seems like something enjoyable to do in my spare time.

That's fucking disgusting.
Romanians call it double chin flute.
There's also drool flute, skin flute or cream clarinet.

you are such a classy broad.
Throat Horn
Cockenspiel
Irish Bag Pipes
Pea Whistle
The Dizzy Gillespie Impression

One of these days I'm going to build my own violin. I'm not to worried about learning to play it though.
