When everyone was talking about suicide and falling from buildings, I mentioned a picture in my death and dying book of a girl who had committed suicide. I finally dug the book out of my car and scanned it again.

I don't know how clear it will come out because it's already black and white in the book. The girl jumped off the observation deck of the Empire State Building (86 floors up) and landed on the roof of a car. You can see the reflection of the building on the lower left side, if the picture comes out clear enough.

The picture is so strange how it's chaotic and calm at the same time.

here are some suicide notes they have in the chapter too:

Written by married man, 45 years old.

My darling,
May her guts rot in hell - I loved her so much,
Henry

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Written by married man, 74yrs old.

What is a few short years to live in hell. That is all I get around here.
No more I will pay the bills.
No more I will drive the car.
No more I will wash, iron & mend my clothes,
No more I will have to eat the leftover articles that was cooked the day before.
This is no way to live.
Either is it any way to die.
Her grub I can not eat.
At night I can not sleep.
I married the wrong nag-nag-nag and I lost my life.
W.S.

To the undertaker,

We have got plenty of money to give me a decent burial. Don't let my wife kid you by saying she has not got any money.

Give this note to the cops.

Give me liberty or give me death.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

this one gave me chills because of "Cathy"

Written by married man, 45 years old

Dear Claudia,

You win, I can't take it any longer. I know you have been waiting for this to happen. I hope it makes you very happy, this is not an easy thing to do, but I've got to the point where there is nothing to live for, a little bit of kindess from you would of made everything so different, but all that ever interested you was the
dollar.

It is pretty hard for me to do anything when you are so greedy even with this house you couldn't even be fair with that, well it's all yours now andyou won't have to see the Lawyer anymore.

I wish you would give my personal things to Danny, you couldn't get much from selling them anyway, you still have my insurance, it isn't much but it will be enough to take care of my debts and still have a few bucks left.

You always told me that I was the one that made Sharon take her life, in fact you said I killed her, but you know down deep in your heart it was you that made her do what she did, and now you have two deaths to your credit, it should make you feel very proud.
Good bye kid.

P.S. Disregard all the mean things I've said in this letter, I have said a lot of things to you I didn't really mean and I hope you get well and wish you the best of everything.

Cathy - don't come in.

Call your mother, she will know what to do.
Love,
Daddy

Cathy don't go in the bedroom.

That Cathy one gave me the chills, too. And you just know she went in after she read it.

If that happened to me, I don't think I would've gone in after reading the note. While writing the warning to his daughter, it didn't occur to him to not do it at all for her sake. Not just to protect her from seeing his body, but feeling the pain of her dad dying is worse.

If he really cared about her, he wouldn't have killed himself in the first place. Then again, who the fuck am I to judge anyone? =\

That reminds me of this, by Bjork... ( esp. bit in bold )

Hyper-ballad

We live on a mountain
Right at the top
There's a beautiful view
From the top of the mountain
Every morning I walk towards the edge
And throw little things off
Like car-parts, bottles and cutlery
Or whatever I find lying around
It's become a habit
A way to start the day

I go through all this
Before you wake up
So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you

I go through all this
Before you wake up
So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you

It's real early morning
No-one is awake
I'm back at my cliff
Still throwing things off
I listen to the sounds they make
On their way down
I follow with my eyes 'til they crash
Imagine what my body would sound like
Slamming against those rocks
When it lands
Will my eyes
Be closed or open?

_I go through all this
Before you wake up
So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you

_I go through all this
Before you wake up
So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you

_I go through all this
Before you wake up
So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you

Safe up ( here with you ) ...

there's a machines of loving grace album cover ("gilt") that looks very similar. i wonder if there's any connection.

that picture of the suicide is so damn beautiful. when i look at it, not to sound too American Beauty-ish, but it's like i can see her last breath. it looks like she maybe imagined falling into a giant pile of feathers and when she landed, she just breathed. she looks so releived and comfortable. almost like she just woke up.
okay, kids, don't try that at home. Smile Big

Yeah, even though the metal is crushed around her because she just smashed into it, she looks so comfortable, sorta nestled right in. The reflection is amazing as well. The building, where she jumped from reflected in the car she landed on. From her landing place, we see the building looming over head. We can see what a long drop it was. Where she just was standing, the air she fell through. Its like, even though the picture was taken after the fact, all the elements involved are shown in this one picture and in such a way that we can almost see it all happen.

Is this book for a class? I took a death and dying class in college. It was one of the best classes I ever took.

I'm not certain, but pretty sure the picture's real. It looks like it was taken a long time ago too, like the 40's or 50's from the way she's dressed, unless she's wearing gloves for cold weather. I'm guessing the real nastiness is inside her body, and underneath where she hit the car, where you can't really see.

Yes it's for the Death and Dying class I took last semester at school. It was a pretty good class, a little redundant with grief themes, but the funeral/burial/dying things were interesting.

disx...I think the fact that he didn't realize it would hurt his daughter shows the irrationality that people are going through to commit suicide. Sometimes they even think their children will be better off without them.

i give the picture a stamp of authenticity. if not, they sure were particular on placement of things, like her foot, that sort of looks broken at the ankle.. it looks that way at first, but i don't think it is that way...
