Sense of Place <part1>
Id like to pose a question.

Q. What do you see as the thing that most threatens the good things about where you are? ( and please dont be token and say 'terrorism' ). I mean, try to be more specific. Perhaps an issue thats only relevant to where you are.
In my case.
I wanted to make a minor vent re: the people that run the joint over here.
[start whine]
Ok, Australia ( Syd. within that too ) is a pretty cool place.
Its loaded with all kinds of people- from all over the world- and its generally clean and happy. People try to get on with their lives, and i dont know- do stuff. Actually try.
And here-- we have a slightly different way in approaching things on some levels. Maybe its the sunshine, or the deadly animals that lurk and try to kill our asses every other day, but were like a rare breed of mutants. Our mentality, is kind of kooky.
So what a wanted to whine about-- my issue- is im concerned about the Conservative assholes that seem to get elected year after year. --now the point will come-- 'Well smartarse, why dont you vote and try and change that'--= but if you know about where i lived- youll see my 1 donkey vote was a drop in the rather large puddle of sydney ( shore ) bollocks voting.
Im not into nationalism-- i just kind of *like* it here-- and can see this place as being the 'other alternative' from everywhere else. -- just cos we do things kinda differently. our mentality being the driving cause. -- eg. i can see, in my industry-- in design mentality how are a refreshing different to Europe and America-- if thats what someone wants-- and i just get pissed at those 1950s mentality idiots 'we' put into government. Who are totally out of touch with where we should be trying to go.
I know, with age comes experience-- but i dont think its right that we put people over 60- as our leader and head of state. the likelihood is that they are trapped in the timeframe where they suited, where they were comfortable- ie. the 50s. i dont know, why cant we have younger leaders- who are wise and with expereince-- and most importantly 'with it' ?
if any other Syd/Aussie ppl want to shoot me down. your time starts now.
[/whine over]
Oh yeah- so thats my bollocks story.
Please feel free to add your own.

Whitley + Shinfield. They're both like the "ghetto" of Reading. and it's spreading to my area! great! *cough*
wes, if you want to be a part of an organization that encourages growth from within, promotes from within and, moreover, has many young people leading the way, please go to your nearest recruiter and sign on the dotted line. congratulations, you've just joined one of the armed services.
my former partner at the securities firm i worked at two years ago was a navy man. if, he had stayed in the navy, he would be a full captain. he's 39 and would have been one step away from rear admiral.
come on, admit it. who wouldn't want to be called admiral and have it mean something. *wink* yes, admiral framstedt, sir. *ahem*
why would i want to become a clone? fuck that, very much.
life's pretty straight without vidalia :You_Rock_
Yeah, we're already products of one system, why make it two?
yes, we're shore bitches. so conceited. how exciting!
life's pretty straight without vidalia :You_Rock_
wes, it could always be worse. you could be represented as a country, as a culture, as a people, to the world, by george w. bush.

well you guys have the Idiot, and we have the Senile.
both pretty bad.
do you dig my 'Ill Rich' style?

At least your head of state can see out from under his eyebrows.
dude, i'm sorry, but there is NO comparison. i'd rather we bring jimmy carter back as president than have this sociopathic chimp. i mean, there's senile and useless...and then there's EVIL.

why not write your congressman, senator and state assemblymen and share your thoughts. i'm sure brother jimmy could spare a few moments from writing his novel on the american revolution, directing habitats for america and from doing other charitable works to step right up and run again for the highest office of the land. might actually make the 2004 election a cake walk from dubya. is that what you want!?! choose someone else, why don't you, for crying out loud.
of course i mean all of this in a tongue in cheek kind of way.
why is it that just because i express an opinion i have the responsibility to take action and fix everything? that's bullshit. i dislike dubya, period, end of story, that's all i'm saying.

HAHA. Write a letter. LOL.
When Congress went to vote on whether or not to give Bush the power to declare war whenever he damn well pleases against Iraq, there were TONS of sites organizing people up to call into their congressmen and such and the calls were ONE HUNDRED TO ONE against giving that power to Bush.
And they gave it to him any fucking way.
Our government does not represent us and they have not for a long fucking time. Bush has just made it blatantly clear. Corporations run this country and nothing short of total economic collapse, world war 3 or a revolution will change things.
dude, read jennifer government.

I like him.
a million bucks
I already did.
You like who? Bush? Die.
Read it in two sittings at Barnes & Noble (didn't someone else talk about doing that? haha, cheap bastards we are)
Great book, shitty thing is I can sooooooo see that happening. I mean really, it's not even a fucking stretch. That is our future. God dammit.
i think the difference is, it wouldn't really be named the way it is--the us kind of owns australia even as we speak, and i think that will become more and more the case, but i don't think you'll ever see australia CALLED a usa territory. same with the last name thing. what's the first thing you ask a new person you meet after their name and maybe where they're from? what they do. surnames actually started out as job descriptions--miller, tailor, etc. so i don't really think you'll ever see someone called "john nike", but there are plenty of people you'd already know as "john-who-works-at-nike", and that's close enough.

Yeah, definitely would agree with that. It's all part of the illusion. Everything can be as much bullshit as they want it to be, we just can't come out in the open and CALL it this or that. We own all these little 3rd world countries, but they aren't called our colonies, cos to acknowledge it makes it more 'real' and well, we just can't have that, then people might start calling us an empire or something. Gasp, shock, horror, etc.
shock and awe? lol

We won't remain a US patsy forever - there's a shockingly strong anti-US sentiment over here... well, not that shocking, really... so the politicians can't get away with their behaviour for too much longer.

Those kind of options do come about - in our local election the other month there were two candidates under 27, which is interesting.
Neither got in - no shock there. People prefer a trusting, older face, I think.
I happily voted in the 'Conservative assholes' in our area - had it been a federal election I'd have considered different options, but in this case, they had the best idea.
Part of what keeps our area of Sydney safe is the excessive police everywhere - some may be a bit crooked, but they're still quite vigilant. The other guys figured (dumb logic) that BECAUSE we were a safe area, we didn't need as many police on the streets.
That's like stopping watering plants because "they're ok now", or something...
So, yeah, the policies presented on a local level I prefer the conservatives. On a federal level... I have no idea why we're following the yankees to hell. It makes no sense. They're not even our biggest trading partner, and last I checked, we're in a capitalist society here.
If anyone, we should be backing China. But wait! They commit gross violations of human rights. But wait, what's with that crap out in the desert recently? The detention centers? We aren't exactly squeaky clean ourselves.
Oh, and get this - the guy in charge of that, our Immigration Minister, Ruddock - he's my local federal member. There's more, too, but none of it furthers the argument I just didn't actually make because I ramble too much
