Hello, I'm new here and just starting to get really interested in graphic novels. Sorry my first post is starting on a strange note but I'm doing some odd research and I wondering if someone here can help me. Years ago I came across a graphic novel in a local book store with cover art that grabbed my attention and kind of weirded me out at the same time. It showed a woman's bare chest but instead of nipples, each breast had the head of some sort of monster (I think they were green). I remember looking in the book and there was a story about a man who wakes up one morning as a woman. There may have been other stories in the book too. I was pretty young, it was sometime in the mid-90's. I considered buying it then but I was with my mom and it would have been awkward. I don't remember the name of the book but I know I would recognize that strange cover if I came across it again. I've done all kinds of searches on google and ask.com but I've come up with nothing. Does my description sound familiar to anyone out there?

Thanks for the suggestion, it looks like an interesting comic. I tried to do some searches with Transmetropolitan but came up with nothing. It looks like all the covers have that main character with the bald head and glasses. The one I remember just showed a woman's chest with green monsters.

Thanks for the warm welcome! What kinds of suggestions do you have for a graphic novel novice?

I second Watchmen. For good reason it's pretty much the only graphic novel that's taken seriously in the U.S.

Some other graphic novels: The Sandman, Preacher, Transmetropolitan

I'm going with Port on the Preacher rec. To me it defines all a good series of graphic novels should be. Any of the Hellblazer collections in Graphic novel form pretty much make the grade as well, I don't know which to recommend but going for any where Garth Ennis is the writer should work, ironically he wrote the Preacher series as well, maybe I have a Ennis fetish.

I actually use to have the whole collection of the Preacher series in well kept comic form. For one reason and another I was without an abode for a while and trusted this guy to watch over my treasure chest of 66, 67? editions of Preacher. The cunt left town leaving a load of debts behind him and took my Preacher comics with him. When I move for reasons that require that I sorta disappear* I always abandon possessions but I wanted those comics god dammit. If that guy ever shows his face or I bump into him he will pay most dearly. Fuckin cock suckin piece a shit.

* Towards the end of my junk habit I owed a lot of money to banks, loan agencies etc and the only way I could see out was fleeing and going off the radar for a while. The downside is that I'm blacklisted for any future credit but hey, it could be worse.

Maybe this was cosmic payback for running out on my debts, never thought of that before, the guy was doing what I had done.

Actually all my victims were banks n loan agencies who make their living from others suffering where as this comic thievin piece a shite owed individuals/friends money, on that note I'm refusing to believe it was Karma, if it is then Karma can suck my dick n lick my ass.

Coyote, if you ever want the entire Preacher series in electronic format, let me know and I'll hook you up.

Thanks for the suggestions. I enjoyed the first half of the Watchmen (I once looked at my friend's copy but had to return it to him before I finished.) I bought the paperback for my brother for Christmas, he's not stopping home til next week so I've been thinking of giving it a peek then re-wrapping it. I read Joker by Brian Azzarello last week and really enjoyed it.

Coyote-I totally feel you on the debt issue. Lately I've seriously considered dropping off the radar too but I keep hearing (from financial advisors who cringe at the mere mention of credit default) that some employers do credit checks. I'm just starting a new career and am afraid to have any blemishes on my record. Of course they could just be saying that to scare me. It's like we either build wealth and security or honor our financial commitments regardless of the stress and excessive finance charges. Good for you for having the testicular fortitude to defy the system. I've got to find a way to grow a pair for myself.

ladybuggin, lots of employers do credit checks. So do landlords.

I don't believe honoring financial obligations and growing wealthy and secure are so bifurcated. In fact, the two are related. You can't grow wealthy without honoring your financial obligations. The system turns you into a pariah if you default on your debts. It means you'll have to pay lots more in higher interest rates to do simple things like buying a car or renting an apartment. You'll pay implicit costs in the form of lower-paying jobs, not being able to qualify for special deals, etc.

Port, where do you live, employers doing credit checks, fuckin hell, and you agree to that. Also landlords ask to know your private financial affairs, not fuckin likely, do people actually have to give permission for that shit or is it a given that anyone can stick their nose in your private affairs. On saying all that I wouldn't advise anyone to do what I did. I have the advantage of having skills in the building field and work for myself, also I have no kiddies to support and like to live free of commitment. I didn't need a film pointing out the faults of modern living and consumerism to realise that most peoples lives are a sham, I worked out all of that for myself long ago. The old saying about one mans meat being another mans poison springs to mind though and what makes me happy may be someone elses idea of hell.

I don't see myself as a pariah though, I see it as doing things on my own terms.

Ladybuggin, I too have tried various searches for the mystery graphic novel, sadly I too have pulled a blank. If you do trace it please let me know as even though I'm a drifter that often leaves things unfinished a mystery is one thing that I like to bring a conclusion to.
