Science & Sagan For All!
Well now the urge to lick them seems almost normal.
did you know that lignin, the stuff that prevents all trees from adopting the weeping habit, is a polymer made up of units that are closely related to vanillin. when trees are made into paper and stored for years, it breaks down and smells good.
this is how divine providence has arranged for secondhand bookstores to smell like good quality vanilla, subliminally stoking a hunger for knowledge in all of us.

I'm quoting it because it was the last post on the page and it deserves to be seen on this page, damnit!
“if you want to be a bird,” you said once, “with colorful plumage and buoyant trills, you must also be ready for hollow bones."
I used to date a very attractive woman who wore a dab of vanilla extract behind each ear and just under her navel as perfume.
My inexplicable arousal in old bookstores is now explicked. But still awkwarrrrrd.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Also.

Secksy.

This doesn't explain why I like it, because I fucking hate everything vanilla.
That is beautiful.
That's so freakin' cool!
I'm glad I found a perfect unison of science and literature for everyone to enjoy c:

Happy Darwinmas!
The day that Darwin comes around in his sleigh pulled by eight distinct species of Galapagos finch and gives all the good little biologists and paleoanthropologists gifts of transition fossils and barbed responses to creation science.
His elves include Huxley, Wallace, Mendel, and Louis Leakey.
okay okay, seriously though. it's charles darwin's birthday! the old man woulda been 203 today.

he's not alive to talk to us about evolution, so I'll let our friend carl give us a beautiful little talk on evolution:
(seriously I love this part of cosmos so much.)

You don't say.
This is why we can't have nice things.
DANG IT! How did that happen. Oh well. Thanks, Tuffy.
It was 50 years ago today that John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. GO SCIENCE!

Why does his head look so big?
Oh, wow. It really does. He looks like he has a little kid's body.

Johnny Appleseed can't do it all by himself. Get out there and plant some of your own damn trees!
yay space exploration!

GUYS THEY REACHED THAT 20 MILLION YEAR OLD LAKE IN ANTARCTICA! they've been working on it for 40 years. this is awesome.
Ever seen that Werner Herzog movie Encounters at the End of the World? They're already finding some crazy stuff just under the regular ice. God only knows what the heck they'll find under 20 million years.

I've been dealing with real life too much.
Have some Bill Nye!

"The universe is not required to be in perfect harmony with human ambition." - Carl Sagan
I met Bill Nye last year when he came to my school. I was 18, and you guys... I'm not a science major or even an amateur science stalker like the people who post a lot in this thread, but it was better than meeting Mickey Mouse at age 7.
OhmySagan. That's so amazing. Did he have an awesome bow-tie on?

"The universe is not required to be in perfect harmony with human ambition." - Carl Sagan
I actually don't remember but I'm not gonna lie... I noticed he smelled pretty good.
It was also weird though because in my head, he hadn't aged... but alas science.
He smelled good. tehehehe. He never ages it seems.. my hero.

perfect allison gif.

not totally related but I've been learning nail art and I'm going to try to do universe nails soon. probably when I'm unsick.

“if you want to be a bird,” you said once, “with colorful plumage and buoyant trills, you must also be ready for hollow bones."
Yes! I love her so much. Also, my friend posted this nail art with glow in the dark nebula-parts and polish photo on my wall & i want to try it as well. ..oh the possibilities. You should definitely do it and tell me how it goes.

Wow, those nails look amazing. Want!

Yes! That body of water is amazing.

So is the an even older body of water, just smaller?
Or is there a younger body of water, just larger?
shit if I know

that's awesome! I want me one of those!
“if you want to be a bird,” you said once, “with colorful plumage and buoyant trills, you must also be ready for hollow bones."
Why do it misspell "Occam"?
This is why we can't have nice things.
it doesn't. it's just an alternate spelling.
“if you want to be a bird,” you said once, “with colorful plumage and buoyant trills, you must also be ready for hollow bones."
I did not know that!

So have you guys tried the broom standing on its own thing yet? It is suppose to have something to do with the equinox and the gravitational pull? Excuse the messy kitchen and floor. Also I couldnt turn the pic.

And after some research I found this.
http://tammyswallow.hubpages.com/hub/Can-Planetary-Alignments-Make-Broom...
Whatever Whore!
sigh. this happens every year. but I guess this is a good place to explain this:
you can balance a broom any day, any time of the year.
http://www.snopes.com/science/equinox.asp
an explanation on balancing (concerning eggs, but the concept is the same for brooms) by phil plait, one of my favorite internet astronomers.
http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/egg_spin.html#badegg
so basically, it's just an urban myth with no basis in fact. people just don't understand gravity.
“if you want to be a bird,” you said once, “with colorful plumage and buoyant trills, you must also be ready for hollow bones."
Yeah, I kept seeing these pics everywhere and tried it. Not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be.
Whatever Whore!
I did the broom-broom-standing-up-by-itself thing the other day.

I love phil plait. here's a talk he did on how we can protect ourselves from terrifying asteroids.

Try standing it on the handle end.
Try standing it on the handle end.
Yeah right?
Whatever Whore!
I really hope you all heard about this...if not I do hope you enjoy!
It made my scientific nerd senses tingle.

It made my scientific nerd senses tingle.
"Robot Submarine on Jupiter Moon Europa is 'Holy Grail' Mission for Planetary Science."
Things I didn't like about that link:
- Referring to Jupiter as the Red Planet. That's Mars, you jackanapes!
- It was not about them discovering a mysterious submarine already there!
- There's no plans for them to even launch such a mission.
If you're going to just pull "Dream Mission" out of thin air, why not go all out and say visiting another Earth-like planet in a far-away solar system? That would seem to be a bigger "Holy Grail" than some Das Boot im Raum!
bahh Yeah, I understand their choice of phrasing and wording was not exactly what I would have used, but I thought it was interesting none the less.

That's got to be the best thing I've heard/seen/read today.
