Science & Sagan For All!
Come marvel at the wonder and elegance of the universe with us.
Talk about the three S's: Science, Skepticism, and Sagan.
Also, this.

"A celibate clergy is an especially good idea, because it tends to suppress any hereditary propensity toward fanaticism." -Carl Sagan
"Am I cruel? Probably. Is she an idiot? Yes." -jane s.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is also awesome.

"A celibate clergy is an especially good idea, because it tends to suppress any hereditary propensity toward fanaticism." -Carl Sagan
"Am I cruel? Probably. Is she an idiot? Yes." -jane s.

This is my favorite. I remember when I first heard that quote and I thought, "Wait.... wait, no. Wait. He's right. Holy shit, he's right."

and let's not forget

“if you want to be a bird,” you said once, “with colorful plumage and buoyant trills, you must also be ready for hollow bones."
Sexy Sagan!

Tyson gets you pumped up about science.

I remember reading about that when it happened! I also remember having nobody to get excited about it with me.

btw, the mariana trench is the scariest thing I can think of.
some great TED talks:

that comic is hilarious.

these two images always blew my mind

Yep. Me too, pretty much my exact thought process.

My grandpa created the high pressure resilient batteries that power the some of the vehicles that have enabled us to explore into these sorts of depths.
THANK YOU. I saw a picture of Sam Harris the other day and I could not for the life of me figure out where I had seen him talk before. Now I remember.

that is AMAZING

that talk is great. I send it to people when they don't comprehend being good without religion.

I love this thread more than I can say. I hate to admit that while I've always loved space and had a fascination for it, my enthusiasm has been lacking, to say that least. I once wanted to be an Astrophysicist, but didn't want to do the math. I am sad to say that life has distracted me from one of my great joys, but I'm so very glad that there are people around, like Steve and Cammie, and now Owl (sorry, didn't catch your name) who are reminding me how amazing the universe and science and reason are.
You guys are da best.

New background by the way.

This is the best. I try everyday(okay maybe not everyday, but at least twice a week for sure) to get people interested in this real life magic. I'm glad we could help remind you a little.

*Edit - Someone recently posted this article, and when I saw Sagan mentioned in this thread, I was reminded of the article.
"We're developing a new citizenry. One that will be very selective about cereals and automobiles, but won't be able to think."
— Rod Serling
"Chuck calls Noah fortnightly on his bakelite rotary phone and gives him publisher's insider information and stock tips."- Tuffy
Holy shit. Just browsing page nine of a GIS when suddenly!

How did this happen? And what are the chances that Cam(or the picture that melody drew of her) and I would be right next to each other in this search that has nothing to do with either picture. This is a sign from Sagan himself. We are on the right path, people.
Seriously, though, how the fuck does google work this witchcraft?

I've never felt so special. thank you google.
also to what you said steve, "I try everyday(okay maybe not everyday, but at least twice a week for sure) to get people interested in this real life magic", is the message dawkin's drives in his book. 4.6 billion years of evolution (and 13.7 billion years of the universe) is way more magical than anything in a fairy tale.
“if you want to be a bird,” you said once, “with colorful plumage and buoyant trills, you must also be ready for hollow bones."
I know! I never understand it when people can't see that. It truly baffles me.

So much win.

Google is so creepily knowing like that. I read an article not too long ago that said that based off of previous searches and sites you go to it can send you more things that 'you like' on the interwebs. So two people searching the exact same thing could get two completely different answers on google based off of previous information.
Bytheby I'm so giddy there's a science thread now. It was the first thing I thought of when I made my hello thread. Dream come true!!

"The universe is not required to be in perfect harmony with human ambition." - Carl Sagan

LOVE THIS. Love that part. "Writing out a googolplex is a spectacularly futile exercise. A piece of paper large enough to contain all the zeroes in a googolplex couldn't be stuffed into the known universe."
When I first heard that I nearly fell out of my chair.

I'm glad I have somewhere for insane Sagan gifs.

I saw the talk at UCSD and couldn't help grinning like an idiot when he signed my copy of The Moral Landscape. But the talk was awesome. There was a picture of Muhammad and nobody died.

I made this a while back, I just remembered. it's a nice screensaver. (open in a new tab to see in full size)

“if you want to be a bird,” you said once, “with colorful plumage and buoyant trills, you must also be ready for hollow bones."

That is so beautiful.

Wow! That's beyond lovely. What a perfect quote.

Haha ohhh Pluto. I was sitting in my first astronomy class when I heard the news.
Heartbreak.

You guys are way too smart.

I'm so in love with learning things. Yay nerdy!

I want this in my passport. I need to get on about getting one of those.
I almost like that enough to make it my new signature.herm.

This thread is the best!

I like how when I am scrolling down the page it appears to pause scrolling for a moment when it passes the Mariana trench scale. THAT'S HOW DEEP IT IS.

Repeat Sagan. YES. Best thread ever hands down.
