i shoot a lot of black and white, and i was curious to know where i could find some image software that acknowledged that my photos were in black and white. i use camera raw settings to avoid compression artifacts, and most raw programs dont seem to show additional information (such as black and white) and i dont feel like the converted images look the same as they did when i took them, since on the camera, they do show up in black and white.

ive been very happy with lightroom.
handles raw files much nicer than photoshop - was designed for them.

Ha! I've always wanted to use that on someone but just felt like, fuck it, I'll do it. People are lazy.

i have elements, and no, no it doesnt. and thanks to whomever said light room, but i would rather spend 300 dollars on... hmm.. i dunno.. a new camera or lenses.

photoshop does a *better* job of making them black and white, i suppose, but given im a purist and i only have elements as a leftover from a digital photo class where the teacher was convinced it would help us somehow.. anyway.. i was just looking for something that took them off my camera 'as they were shot'

i mean, if you just want to get them off the camera as they were shot, it's simple.

on a mac, image capture, built right into the OS. in windows, if your camera shows up as an external storage unit, open it up in file manager and drag and drop. raw images, copied off the camera, as shot.

gimp might have support for bw raw, or at least a plugin for it. i dont know. if you or anyone you know is enrolled in college, you can get lightroom for $90 at the student price. i can't recommend it enough - it's my image processing software of choice. rarely to i open up photoshop anymore.

also, most cameras will not store your image in black and white in the raw file, as it defeats the purpose. raw eliminates in camera processing as much as possible, including light/shadow/gradient processing for black and white. often times what you see is just the preview so you can make sure highlights aren't blowing your image out, but i can't remember ever exporting a raw file and having it be black and white before i 'digitally develop' it.

i agree, with everything you said, i do. but here's where im confused. in my camera they're black and white, and BEFORE i hit import they're black and white. i hit import, and ugh.

also: 90 bucks you say? best editor you say? does it catalog your images in the manner iphoto does? or in folders by date the way fstop used to? i liked those formats for finding things.

Maybe I'm an idealist, but I would think that if you work in RAW photos, shelling out the cash for some professional level applications wouldn't be a bad idea.

These days, instead of getting all the stuff you need for a proper dark room, you buy some software. In the long run, you're probably spending a lot less cash and you don't have to deal with noxious fumes.

you can download a 30 day trial for free chuck. see if it does what you need.

https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_lightroom...

i use a mac, but i've never used iphoto so i wouldn't know exactly how iphoto catalogues photographs. lightroom lets you browse by directory, but also by any thousand bits of metadata, tags, camera settings used, etc.

for me, it's been the absolute best digital darkroom for my RAW images. i do sometimes hop into photoshop afterwards, but it's been much less frequent.

Chuck! You may also want to download a trial of Apple Aperture 3. I've used previous versions, but the new version Apple just released looks like it just shot leaps and bounds beyond Lightroom. I'm actually considering jumping ship for Aperture 3, the more I investigate it.

i've made further research!

it seems lightroom 3 is just around the corner, so it should be neat to see where they sit feature for feature when that happens. my best guess is that aperture 3 will come out on top, because it's storming photoshops gate's with some of the features new to this version.

i also found out that ap3 imports your iphoto data and seems to store the same data - geotagging, face recognition, etc. but like i said, i've never used iphoto, so you may do well to check that aspect out yourself.
