Post Office
I've just finished reading Post Office by Charles Bukowski. I liked it alot and was wondering can anyone here please recommend which of his other books i should read next please...
Will do, thanks
I have yet to read his poetry. But i'm at a stage in my life where i 'get' very little poetry. I guess i just can't appreciate most of it, with a few exceptions.
But yes, his novels, and shorts collections were all amazing. even his letters collections were fucking great. I can't say enough good about Bukowski. He's a huge favourite of mine, and probably one of the writers i think i emulate the most in my own work. He simply has his finger on the pulse of the male psyche. he gets us, and we get him.
My two favourite novels of his were Factotum and Women. Post Office was brilliant, as was Ham on Rye. so suit yourself.
But if you're a fan of Californication then you may be interested to know that Hank Moody was looselt based on women-era Chinaski. At least at first.
Women was my favorite. I kinda think it was because it was my first. But still, I can see myself rereading that one in the future.

Something i've fancied watching since it first came on, Californication, but i missed the first episode so i didn't bother. Post Office is my first Bukowski experience, haven't read anything else or seen the movies that have been based on his work. Don't really fancy the poems anyway, not a poetry fan really but i was gonna ask about the letters
Yeah the letter were great. I've only read Vol. 1 and 2, though, so i can't back 3 and 4, but i'd assume they'd be great.
I'd say just read them in order, which is what i did. Factotum next. then Women.
Californication would definitely in my desert island top 5. probably top 3. check it out. you'll dig it. it's smart, funny, dramatic, sleazy--definitely sleazy. I'm hoping one of my favourite cultie buddies will somehow copy season four from tele and send the files to me when it starts on your screens next month.
I'll have to see if i can get em on dvd.
I was thinking bout readingg them in order myself, just thought i'd ask see if there was one that stood out but if they're all good i might as well just carry on.
I liked Ham on Rye a lot, and Factotum is pretty good too. And no, don't read the poetry, if you liked his prose, you'll hate his poems.
Good call. It shows Bukowski's life at the other end of the spectrum, when he has made it as an author. What's cool is, he's still the same guy.
Has he got a different pseudonem for each book?
I spelt pseudonem wrong didn't i?
Yes, you did. It's pseudonym. And know, he just has the one: Henry Chinaski. He has one other novel, Pulp that doesn't star Henry Chinaski, but the rest, yeah, they're all Chinaski. Women is when he is much older and has found a bit of fame through his writing. Where as Post Office and Factotum were from when he was slumming it and trying to write and get published. And, of course, Ham on Rye is set with Chinaski as a child.

factotum was alright, same with Notes of a dirty old man.
I'd only recommend his novels though. stay away from the poetry.
