My initial reaction was an "aww" a bit less enthusiastic than for the new baby pics.
About half a second later I had an urge to swat the rat away from the stuff it was chewing.
The fact that I had an initial aww makes me feel like I am becoming a better person.
(note* I don't really swat puppies, just firmly nudge them)
So...the tornado that was on top of my house when I looked out the window and freaked out and shoved my family into the bathroom was an F2.
I'm not sure if anyone else is interested, but I found this site that explains the Fujita Scale (tornado rating) last week. I found it pretty facinating, especially the part down on the second half that explains how they are often misrated.

We're pretty lucky that all we lost was a fence and some shingles.
The tornado that went through Tuscaloosa and killed all those people was finalized as an F4 yesterday. Have you seen any of the footage of the damage? It's unbelievable. We watched it online as it was happening, and it looked like something out of a movie. The meteorologist kept saying he expected there to be significant loss of life, even saying that "being in your safe place" may not matter with something like that coming your way. It was like he didn't even know what to say.

Maybe it's cyclical. I think what you said is a big part of it (we have the means to hear about it in a way we didn't 100 years ago). We had a freakishly hot summer here last year, and then this winter, it snowed earlier and more than it ever has in my twenty years of living in the South (first Georgia, now Alabama). Harshest winter I've ever experienced, and I lived in GA during the 1993 Storm of the Century (which was described as a "generational event", like these recent tornadoes). I just hope things get stabilized and normal again, because if this is a trend for the future, we're screwed and I'm moving out West.
