Actually the number you are referring to is about 9.82, and it changes as you move away from the surface of the earth, but for all intents and purposes it is constant. Another point about it, is it is not measured in meters per second. Meters/sec is velocity. 9.82 is the acceleration of an object in freefall near the surface of the earth and it is measured in meters/sec^2 (that is meters/sec per second). But what do I know, I am just the scum of the earth.
