It's been a while since we had one of these (if you're a fan, there's a sports GROUP on the Cult as well)...

Anyhoo.

This is Urijah Faber:

How much of a badass is he? He fought a five round decision this past weekend. After round one, the inside of his hand looked like this:

It was gutsy as hell. And he lost on split-decision!

And, on the same card, Jose Aldo performed this fantastic holy-shit-this-Tony-Jaa-stuff-actually-happens-double-flying-knee and ended Cub Swanson's night in THREE seconds.

I know there's a few of you lurking around here...who else is a fan of MMA?

I'm a huge fan unfortunately we don't get a regular broadcast of the regular shows WEC or TUF so I have to watch the fights online. At least the a couple of the Gringo bars down her will show the pay-per-views on a hacked Dish Network system.

Faber is fantastic, I doubt he would have beat Brown even with a good hand. Brown was too strong.

The lower weight classes don't get the respect they deserve from the casual fan.

See, I think he would have gotten brown in the fifth. Brown couldn't get a solid ground game against him and his hands were broken. If he was healthy, he would have gotten an armbar or choke at some point in the fifth when Brown was gassed.

Wow congrats on the new found love. I've been watching for long time. I had the early ones on VHS tapes(hard little boxes with magnetic film inside). Go back and make sure you check out the earlier PPV's there are definitely some fantastic fights.

Check out Kevin Iole from Yahoo.com, as part of the countdown to UFC 100 he's giving a synopsis of every UFC since number 1.

My favorite back in the day was Don Frye, best mustache in the business.

Its real funny how I got into it.

I bought and extra sports package last year to get more soccer. One night I was flicking channels and I spotted Brock I Used To Be in The WWE Lesnar and I thought I might aswell watch it. He beat up Randy Couture in the main event and I was think OK it was good but this is the main event I bet its not as good other times.
About a month later I tuned into the next PPV, I forget which number it was but Cheik Kongo fought Mustapha Al Turk and both guys ended up kneeing eachother in the nuts. After that I havent missed a PPV. By the time UFC 100 comes around I will stay up all night to watch it. Damn Timezones!

Don Frye! I used to love listening to Ken Shamrock give him shit about the 'stache.

He's still got it, even at 40+

You're actually good this Saturday because the PPV is in Germany, It's a 1pm start time for Me so it's likely a 7PM start for you in Ireland.

I did an interview with one of the Top Women fighters Rosi Sexton, UK girl, for my site. You can likely get the UK Show, I forget the name but it's like ultimate fighter except it only features the women.

That Don Fry fight is the stuff of legends.

I've been an MMA fan for over 3 years now. I am fucking addicted. I even read the blog sites everyday, and have been known to purchase the Pay-Per-View events... even if I can't convince any of my non-fighting-fan friends to come over. Lol.

I haven't seen WEC 41 yet, but I have it on my laptop and will be watching it during my plane trip to NY tomorrow morning.

Anyway stoked for UFC 99? Some great fights on that card. Predictions?

I love Rich Franklin, but I think his time is slowly passing. And Silva is such a nice guy. I'd love to see him return to form, like his earlier PRIDE days. So yeah, I'm hoping 'The Axe Murderer' knocks out 'Ace'.

I watch a lot of MMA.

Faber with two good hands would have definitely been in a lot stronger contention. If everything went the same and he locked up Brown in the fifth with the same moves I think he could have pulled them off.

When the first fight happened I didn't know anything about Brown and figured he was a mandatory and an easy target; but since then, I've seen a lot of his prior work and dude can bang.

Excited about next month when my favorite mma fighter -- Cro Cop -- gets another shot at the UFC. He's been hurt a lot and he's aging, but I'd love to see him take down a fight or two and then maybe get a shot at Brock (if he doesn't lose the belt first)..

UFC 99 is a hard one for me. I like the whole Rich Franklin story and I know he's a dedicated guy, but Wanderlei is such a beast and I love watching him muay thai the shit out of people.

and just like everyone else,
I wish FEDOR could get in the big action again and destroy every. single. person.

oh, and UFC should get some new announcing talent for christ's sake.

This will be my first time seeing Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva fight but Im not going to argue with somebody call The Axe Murderer so I will go for him.

I really want Cheick Kongo to win, hes probably my second favourite fighter in UFC.

I saw Dan hardy fight a few months back on that PPV from London. I liked him but after the fight he started jumping around with the butchers apron and I got sick of him.

Cro Cop to win would be nice too.

Lets see on Sunday How wrong I am.

Ugh, I hate Kongo. Such a pompous ass. Not to mention, a boring fighter to watch. I'm really not sure how he keeps winning. But I just want to see someone crush him, once and for all. I also can't stand that tapping-the-chest-and-then-raising-his-finger-in-victory-thing he does during his walk out.

But yeah, I forgot momentarily that Crop Cop was fighting. I'd love to see that guy get back onto his game again. But Cane is a monster. So we'll see how it goes. Not an easy fight for him at all.

A lot of people saw that fight, it's a shame they chose to promote a guy with poor skills but a big persona over other fighters. That's one of the reason the Japanese market isn't as successful, they promote too many gimmicky fights.

Fedor could kill all humans with a blindfold on, if he wanted to.

And Dennis, it's relieving to hear the same Kongo complaints I've yelled at the TV. His chest tapping thing, I hated him from the beginning because of that. A decent kickboxer, filled out lately with some wrestling (remember him in the beginning, when he couldn't defend a takedown against anyone?), but he remains one of those guys who is only there because he's a HUGE NIGGA. I have to admit I'm entertained, I want to see him brought down.

Favorites: Anderson Silva, Machida, Gouveia, and Mike 'Quick' Swick. Swick fu! Punches in bunches! The swick-a-tine! I think he could take GSP. Remember I said that. Swick will be champ.

I like Kongo, he beat Cro-Cop. The problem with him is that until now he hasn't been able to string wins together.

His fight versus Cain V. on Saturday will push one of them into a title fight by the end of the year.

Favorites - GSP, Rashad Evans, Rampage, Nick Thompson and Rosi Sexton. Still have love for Gary Goodridge but he' well past his prime. And Remy Bonjasky from K-1

Fedor is solid for sure but his Russian Mafia Management team are crooks, I don't see him ever fighting in the UFC because of them. Dana White won't put up with the shit they cause behind the scenes.

Anderson Silva used to be a favorite, but his showboating performances in his last two lackluster fights have currently turned me off of him.

Current favorites: Randy Couture, Forrest Griffin, Kenny Florian, GSP, Fedor (fuck yeah!!), Rampage, Wanderlei Silva, Mirko Crop Cop, Clay Guida, Liddell, BJ Penn...

And I used to not like him so much, but Machida's fights are becoming so much fun to watch. And he won me over with his speech after taking the belt from Evans.

I like that Kimbo is making a solid 'go' at becoming a real MMA fighter, especially by humbling himself and going on the Ultimate Fighter...

...but that fight with Thompson was the dumbest fight I've ever seen in MMA.

also I know UFC 99 is already a decent card,
but UFC 100 looks like it'll have some major fireworks.

FRANK MIR > BROCK LESNAR
GSP > THIAGO ALVES
DAN HENDERSON > BISPING

hopefully BONNAR > MARK ROID RAGE COLEMAN

damn, looking it at it now that card is a monster line-up.
It'd be nice to get the belt in the hands of a true heavyweight champion. Someone that earned it.

If only UFC could make Carano/Cyborg happen...

Also, I think if Lesnar pulls this one off and gets a solid next few opponents, you'll have to take him seriously. They need a face/circus sideshow like Lesnar/Kimbo/etc to keep the money rolling in, but the lower weight classes are where it's all at...

the lower weight classes,
also known as the WEC lol.

I do hate to admit, but I will cave in and give Brock props if he can convincingly mow down a solid lineup.

And as for Carano,
I'd like to see it.

By the way, is Mir's leg still fucked up? he re-injured it a few months ago and I'm ready to blame that if he loses to Lesnar. His title run so far is a fluke and that won't be enough to turn me (yet).

@federov - no need to hate on Lesnar just because he was given an opportunity and he took it. Fighters have such a short Window to make big cake. If you want to hate on someone hate on Joe Silva, Dana White and Capitalism. Lesnar just took what was given to him.

I'll be at the UFC expo and UFC 100. I think Lesnar is too big of a guy to beat. If Mir can withstand those monster fists and grapple with him, he'll submit him.

What I'm really excited for is GSP v alves. I think it should be a good fight, a lot of action. Tough call.

I'll be posting photos through twitter and facebook if anyone is interested.

Also, I've been very impressed with the strikeforce line up. Every fight has been fun to watch.

say a man (myself) wanted to take some martial arts lessons for fun and self discipline and he (i) can't really decide between krav maga (expensive and far away but very effective) or muay thai (cheaper and closer and it looks way cooler). what are the pros and cons of each?

Krav maga isn't really a martial art but more a defensive tactic that embraces fighting dirty (Eye gouging, ball kicking, biting, weapons). Lots of police officers learn it, and Israeli soldiers specialize in it. It's all about being aware of all your surroundings and options, doing anything necessary by all means and disarming gunmen and shit. It's pretty nifty.

Muay Thai is like a "looser" form of kickboxing that lets you strike with your knees and elbows along with your fists and feet, dubbing it "the art of the eight limbs". It's also nifty but probably wouldn't help you in a life or death situation as much krav maga would. I don't really know much else.

i could do both but i'm lucky i can even afford one class right now. and i've seen both demonstrated, muay thai looks badass and krav maga annihilates the opponent in seconds. well i guess both of them do that but krav maga looks a lot more devastating.

I'd suggest Muay Thai, but I don't know much about Krav Maga. Muay Thai, because it has the skeleton of boxing in it, which I think is essential. I feel a guy with one month boxing experience will destroy a fighter of Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, or most anything else, if that opponent has less than three times the experience in his art. The first time you spar, boxing, you realize it's ten times harder to hit a moving target than you could ever have imagined, and you feel worthless and stupid trying if your opponent knows what he's doing, even if he's an amateur. The techniques in boxing are hard to misinterpret, they're incredibly simple, tried tested and true, and effective. When somebody in a bar is in a rage, running at you with his hands down, just knowing to keep your chin covered and knowing how and when to throw a jab, how to wait for a hook, when to uppercut--those incredibly simple things that have had over one hundred years of close observation, puts you a high step above.

And if you ever do get into a fight, it's unlikely it'll be necessary that you take the man's eyes or balls away from him. A clean knock out will suffice.

Have you considered Judo? It's the way to go if you want practical benefits outside of hurting people. You achieve a sense of balance that makes it impossible for you to ever slip and fall, and if you do, your body is resilient enough to afford the impact, and after years of practicing falls and being thrown to the ground by 250lb black belts only to spring to your feet again, time slows when you're upside down, you have a sort of feel for your balance and your relation to the ground. I swear if they made Judo mandatory in school, no child would ever break an arm falling off of a bicycle or anything, it's inconceivable. And seeing as fighting is almost always stupid, and anyone you fight will most likely be stupid, you'll find it easy to simply get away. Judo black belts fight judo blue belts and can not topple them unless the blue belt attacks to give his opponent an opening, and the black belts in the Olympics throw and whip each other around for sometimes ten or fifteen minutes without anyone's feet coming off the ground. If you want to get away, it'll be simple, whoever is holding onto you. When a Judokan goes all defensive, it's like a boxer backpedalling with his block up, nothing is going to touch him. It's like physical chess, and if you wanna be a prick about it, the openings an amateur or bar room brawler offer you when they grab you by the throat or shirt, it's as easy as sliding a rook to the corner of the board and the guy's arm is snapped.

I'd also add that muay thai will give you much MUCH better conditioning than krav maga, specifically because of what Nightrious mentioned. Any instructor worth his salt is gonna have you doing all sorts of cardio, kick reps, sit ups, push ups, etc in addition to sparring. I'm desperately seeking a place (and budget) to get back into kickboxing.

Also, I just returned from a day trip to Vegas, and I'm really amped because of all the UFC 100 stuff I saw. The Official Frank Mir afterparty is at New York, New York. Which, I hope, is a loser party.

I also discovered that at Planet Hollywood, there are scantily clad ladies who poledance on the gaming tables. To make that fact relevant to this thread, I saw a guy at said tables wearing an Affliction T-Shirt.

i don't want to compete or anything, i just want to learn some self defense and self discipline. also i don't want cauliflower ears. i'm leaning towards krav maga and maybe later i can do muay thai. i'm in your boat, i can't really afford a lot right now.

Then Julian's got this attitude and fires a bullet at my brand new car! Real nice! So I fired a shot at his new car. Spy for a spy, that's the way it works around here."

Im happy now. The channel that shows UFC over here went bankrupt last month and until tonight it didnt look like UFC 100 would be on TV. Thankfully an Irish channel picked it up and now its only the Brits that wont see it!!!!!!!
