10 to 1 they think Orlando Bloom is cute. Cause he is! Look at him! How could you deny it!

Stupid girls. Happy 300th post, Rohan!

Oh, cool. That's a lot of posts.

I reckon he's a crackup. His comments in the Fellowship of the Ring commentary and in interviews have me laughing, or pondering them at least if they weren't intentionally funny.

I love his complete honesty, too. "So, why'd you get into acting?" "For the chicks."

That's sweet-ass! He has smarm. Another reason to love him. You should be proud of the comparisons to a pretty-looking, immortal, and smarmy elf-man. You should write them all down and bandy them about with honor.

*shrug* It's not bad, but it has the unfortunate side-effect of desperately making me wish that I -had- played Legolas in LOTR Smile

LOL! Cause then you'd be this total chick magnet, and you could say ,"Hey baby....I'm not an immortal elf, but I play one in the movies. I also have pretty hair. Would you like to braid it?"

No, I'd leave the last bit out, and I wouldn't call her baby.

Besides, the last bit is already implied, according to most girls Smile Any guy with long hair is just -asking- to have it played with, for some reason.

Why wouldn't you call her baby? I can't think of a good reason to do it, but it seems appropriate, somehow. And some girls would be bashful like I would on the subject of braiding a celebrity's hair unless granted permission. Then they'd be like, "Okay!!" and happily braid for hours. But you have to give them an opportunity to get their shy little feet in the door.

I don't think hollywood celebs braid each other's hair at parties, anyway, so it's a moot point.

Oh, and I wouldn't call her 'baby' because that sounds sleazy. And one thing I can't stand is sleazy people, or myself coming across that way. It implies you don't think of a woman as your equal.
I don't know--girls are taught to forgive and be as nice as possible. They are the nuturers and the peacemakers. But I have this niceness syndrome to a degree that would very much astonish you. Case in point: josh. The really sad thing is that I am totally aware I do this, yet continue to do it. I don't know, YOU tell me why girls do this.
jane, read Reviving Ophelia. do it. now.

as for the "guys and girls can't be friends" thing, i don't know what people you guys hang out with, but most of my close friends are guys (except my absolute best friend, who's a girl, and two or three others), and the relationships are totally platonic. period. and trust me, i know them, they don't any of them want to fuck me, and trust me, i'm *not* very attractive. and no, i don't consider myself delusional. and no, none of my closest male friends that i hang out with on a regular basis is remotely gay (although i do have a whole gaggle of gayboys that i hang out with as well)...in fact, one of them, who i consider my best male friend, who is seriously like my brother even though that's a total cliche, has done quite well for himself in the heterosexual arena.

you can even ask him. his screen name is launderkarma. he's not on much, but you can catch him every so often.

who are the people i talk with most on this board? rents, wes and zaki. who have i fought with most? mirkah. this seems to be the way it is in my life--i get along with most guys, straight or gay, and not with most girls, and when i *really* don't get along with someone, it's usually another girl.

and no, i'm not really a guy IRL, and i'm not a dyke.

my theory about that whole "guys and girls can't be friends" thing is that the theory in and of itself is a *male* delusion. either, "our relationship didn't fuck up cause i'm a total dweeb, it's because she wanted to fuck me too much. yeah. that's the ticket." or because most of them are shallow, and so they assume everyone else is shallow too? or maybe that's how they explain why their female friend who thought she could trust them freaked out when they got drunk and he decided "she'll do"? i mean, really. how can you say that a thing can *never* happen. as they say in the trades, never say never. it *can* happen...i'm living proof...lol.

beefcake! beefcaaaaake!!!

"...it's because she wanted to fuck me too much."

No, no, the reverse Smile

Of course what I said was a broad, sweeping generalisation, but can't you just play alone for a while? I'm desperately trying to shatter Jane's delusions about life and make her suspicious of every single male friend of hers.

But seriously, while there have been friendships that I've either seen or been a part of that were not affected (much) by our genders, more often than not, it still plays a part.

To see a -really- cynical view on this, read about 'ladder theory'.

And as for Reviving Ophilia, I'm tempted to read that, but only if you promise me it doesn't demonise men. A personal hate of mine is hearing women carry on about the problems facing their gender as if men have no social pressures or problems at all.

"plays a part" is one thing. "can never work" is quite another. so how do you fit what i just told you about me into "ladder theory"?

and no, i'm not going to play along. Tongue

just because women have the crazy idea that men--the only other possible type of person genderwise--are at fault for many of the gender-related difficulties they experience in their life doesn't mean they "demonize" men. and i have to admit i'm a little frustrated with that statement on your part--i generally get rankled when a man or a white person says about a woman or a black person, "well, *we* have problems too." no kidding. no one's saying men don't have any social pressures. but there are far more placed on women, and if you don't agree with that, well, we shouldn't argue about it cause we're never gonna agree.

anyway. i don't remember reviving ophelia demonizing men in particular. it's more about the changes women go through when entering adolescence, as they start being exposed to stereotypes especially about beauty and their looks. the way girls who are in many ways indistinguishable from boys, playing outside and being "tomboys" as children become shrinking violets worried about their hair when they reach high school age, not suddenly, but through a process. but then again, i haven't read it for a while, so i can't make you any promises.

I used to have this group of good friends back just out of high school - they were a year younger than me, so doing their HSC at the time. Very smart and witty, I saw them almost every weekend.

Then, as they went to Uni, they were exposed to all this leftist propaganda, and became activist feminazi bulldyke types. Most of them, anyway.

They started treating me like crap because I was -one of them-. I went to a party with them, and one had written this song talking about something involving being heartbroken by a guy, and sung it while strumming on her guitar. Two of these girls errupted into tears, and I'm sitting there feeling very, very uncomfortable and suddenly I find one of them giving me a deathstare. I'm not dumb enough to believe it was because I was male (they're not THAT insane) but probably because I didn't seem to care abut the song - that it hadn't "affected me" or something.

One even had the gall to have a go at me once... saying that I wouldn't have any idea about problems - that I couldn't possibly comprehend.

that sucks that they treated you with that much disrespect, and i went to college with a great number of stupid gits like that. but i think that's a very black and white way of looking at the issue--not everyone who expresses opinions similar to those girls' has their issues with men. for an example, notice i'm not pointing out to you in response to your story that, "hey, women have problems too!! are you trying to say they don't??"

in some cases, that's apples and oranges. what i'm trying to say is there's no monopoly on social pressures, and not all well-meaning but highly political people are very sensible. i like to think i'm more so, but still, there are gender-related pressures in my life, just like yours, that i have to acknowledge.

No, there isn't a monopoly. But hearing "feminist" propaganda that points the finger irritates me, and that's what quite a bit that I've read lately has been.

Actually, a few weeks ago my gf decided to declare that she was "no longer a feminist" because the word provoked too many negative associations in people's minds. That she believed in equality, not the crap she kept reading at Uni from fellow "feminists".

Actually, I first read Fight Club when I was deep into depression over losing these 'friends', and if it hadn't been for the way I was treated, I wouldn't have quite 'clicked' with Fight Club in the same way, I think.

i don't call myself a feminist either, and your friend is right.

but, the only reason i have the job and opportunities i have now is because of the original feminist movement of the 60's and 70's. i think that making men the enemy is wrong, just like i don't agree with black nationalism. but hey, it's a free country.

i clicked with fight club too...for much different reasons.

Comments like, 'I wonder if another woman is really the answer we need...' is what got me, I think.

Primarily, I think, because out of my friends NONE of them had a father for their teen years. Out of about ten of us, every single one had his father leave, and his mother got custody.

And now I'm just opening a second can of worms Smile

yep.

of course about that all i have to say is it's the father who left, and having their mother stick around was pretty much what saved their lives. so, in fact, given that they're crazy psycho boys who beat each other up for fun, maybe another woman is exactly what they need.

then again, i looked at the whole book as a delusion on the narrator's part.

Perhaps I should have worded that differently... "leave" isn't the best way to describe some of the circumstances.

The simple fact is that double standards work in all sorts of weird ways. Over here, at least. I've no idea what your court system is like, but there is almost no way for a male to keep the house and/or custody of the children around here short of one helluva a prenup.

insomnomaniac

that's the case here also. but there are also a hell of a lot of men who kick around their wife and kids for years, beating them, molesting them, generally abusing them, whatever, and when the wife leaves, if he decides to go through the court and doesn't just kill her, he still gets partial custody because "a child needs a father."

so like i said, apples and oranges.
