To me, Barn owls were never owls. They're birds like owls that are like them but not really, like Palatypi are to mammals/birds/whatever they are. This is a f**king owl, man:

Wow. Owls are great, but I had never really considered them as a contender for most adorable animal ever. Until now, of course. It's like a mogwai with no arms and a beak.

That wasn't an owl, it was a fucking gremlin. Though, I have always wanted an owl. Or some other kind of hunting bird, just as a pet, you know? But I don't have a big enough property, nor do I know how to acquire such a bird.
