Zines are great stuff. It's a cheap and easy way to get your work, opinion, or any other random shit out there for cheap without any real hassle. Portland is full of them and a good chunk of the work is fantastic.

I don't read those either. Thankfully, the creators of those millions of blogs, forums, and social network sites don't feel the need to spam their wares here or I'd be very busy telling them all what complete douchebags they are.

Also, standard capitalization, punctuation, and spelling are useful if you want to be read and understood. Otherwise, don't bother trying to create something that is tangible and "yours". I cannot recommend The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition by Strunk and White enough. It is small, inexpensive, and indispensable.

No offense to this guy, but I think there's a huge difference. The reason he didn't get the reaction he wanted is because the initial pitch had this sort of cavalier tone to it, and he also didn't tell us much about his work or himself.

I believe you both are appropriate regarding posting about your work. I appreciate brevity just as much as someone who fleshes things out like you do.

I mean, I don't want to read a synopsis of a work every time I turn around, you know, so I don't think this guy did any harm by briefly saying "Hey, I'm here, check me out."

And it was so brief! A couple posts is hardly spamming and I get way more from you yet I don't get pissed because you are a writer who's trying.

I'm interested in what this guy has to say just as much as in what you have to say. He's taken less of my time so it's okay that he gave minimal info. You've taken more of my time so your posting more is completely justified.

You're right, there's no harm in posting, but I think some members are reacting negatively to the fact that he's been a member for over a year and only popped in to sell us his wares. You know how this place is. That approach has never worked.

And like I said before, the initial pitch had a real "whatever" vibe to it, so I think he got the "whatever" vibe right back, i.e. - he didn't give the readers a reason to read.

See, I think this guy is a jerk and a spammer. He hasn't bothered to check out this community at all except to pimp his site and his zine. And this is not his first thread, it's his third.

What you consider brevity, I consider rude. It wastes my time to click on the thread and read "check out my shit". Really, why should I bother? Maybe if he took the time to tell us about his writing or zine, but just demanding that we click is bullshit.

I'm sorry it soured you on the site, Nikki, but I completely understand why he's getting shit. It's like being accosted is the way I see it. I don't even think people should be able to start a thread like this unless they're part of the community; it's just an invitation to spam and abuse.

Really, why? There was nothing - nothing - in his introductory post to recommend his writing. He gave us "i write and shit heres a link oh an heres a pictcure of me with mussy hair an i havent shaved in a couple weeks as you can see i have a tattoo also there are cartoon cigarettes floating over my head" So um, yeah, if he was going for simultaneously boring and repellent, he nailed it. Not an easy combination, so we should give him that.

Now, Brandon, he came in here and plugged his book. And he caught some hell for it. But he wasn't a dick, he stuck it out, didn't cry, and became a fully-participating member of this community. But this dillweed up here, he doesn't give a rat's ass about this forum or the people on it, or even what he can get out of it by taking part; he just wants you to click his link and validate his existence.

I don't come here to read page after page of plugs for a multitude of "indie" writers' portfolios, and I don't think that most of the others here do either.

I'll also add that no one with that thin of a skin is likely to succeed at anything, let alone as a writer.
