interesting book for all you avid readers
i'm likely posting this in the wrong section. if i am my apologies. but anyhow there's a book i bought from amazon that turned out to be much better than i thought it might be. it has its weaknesses for sure but i think this writer shows some great potential.
the book is called 'stealing ganymede' and the author is a dude named j warren, though i'm under the impression that's not his actual name.
peace
yeah, this is book discussion so it belongs in the book club forum. i've never heard of dude but will look into him.
what is it about the book you personally liked. was it the writing, or the humor? was it the characters?
and what's it about-

You called that one right. It is a 200 page 'novel' published by a vanity press.
It is also a gay imprint. In the words of Jerry Seinfeld, "Not that there is anything wrong with that."
Kind of silly. There is a whole forum dedicated to pimping up your shit, why not register under your real name and pimp the book the regular way?

Maybe it's his boyfriend's book.
wow. that's a lot of harshness for a simple book recommendation. and no it's not my book or anyone i know...just thought i'd recommend a book.
i now remember why i quit coming to this site.
recommending a book is never a bad thing. but in the midst of paranoia and free lips, it is understandable that it is easier to quit than to get along with people. but you dont really participate here. it is easy for members to not know you and treat you like a stranger. youve had this account for a year and four months, and have posted nine times. the book club can be fantastic for booktalk and finding recommendations. but dont leave the site because you think members here are dicks and mean. leave because you dont like the place, what it has to offer, and you dont know how to get along well with others. the world is full of nice people who arent always nice. but most people you get to know tend to be good people and this place is no different, brother-
stay and offer a new dynamic to the cult forums for a while
or dont because you dont want to
either way, good luck to you and yours

yeah, some sort of why it is so good would be much more likely to draw me into reading a book.
And, heck, given enough time, I'll give a shot to any book or short written (or recommended) by a Cultist; I mean why not? But, you know, throw me a bone.
This is why we can't have nice things.

I agree
You know Brandon Tietz joined a few weeks ago and seemed like a cool guy so I ordered his book, same with DeLeon DiMicoli, so sticking around and getting to know folks sells books.
Absolutely. I too-quickly jumped on Brandon for the insta-plug, as we have more than a few who only pop in once a month to point out that, "Oh, hey, by the way, my brilliant masterpiece is still available from We-Print-Anything Books. Only $29.95, $64.38 Canadian; here's the link!" but he has proven to my satisfaction to be an actual and for-real Cultie, so I'm likely to pick his book up as soon as my queue dips down into the single digits again.
(Sorry about that, Brandon!)

hahaha
yeah. stephen blackburn has a petite collection of short stories self published, titled The Extinction of Rhinos in Mexico
http://www.amazon.com/Extinction-Rhinos-Mexico-Stephen-Blackburn/dp/0738...
and though i'm not a fan of self pub'd books, his title story is just heartbreaking. he even had an old review i'd written here at the cult linked on his website (before drupal devoured it, that is..)
most of my reads came from the cult. a high most. chuck got me into hempel and denis johnson. you, tuff, really pushed me into vonnie without even trying. even my first hemingway was a recommendation from this site.

Just to clarify Tuffy I wasnt having a dig at you. You're cool man, I would read your shopping list of you published it.

Oh, I didn't take it that way. Just been sort of owing him a note of apology since. Might as well make it public.

You are always respectful and genuinely interested in literature. But the kid has a point, there are some heavyweight posters around here, that are consistently ignorant, smug, dicks etc...
That Nathaniel is one of them. Just plain fucking annoying.
I don't post much, but that shouldn't hold a value to my membership.
Hell, i thought i was particularly nice. I wished him luck!

Hey, now... Nate's not ignorant!
This is why we can't have nice things.
A lot of times i'll talk shit just to see if anyone will call me out on it.
Like that Iranian protest thing. I haven't read anything on that topic! Ha!
people are so sensitive these days. the world is like a giant oprah episode. or worse, a giant tyra banks episode.
(Sorry about that, Brandon!)

Tuffy and Derek...thanks for the kind words.
But there's definitely a good point being made here...participate and get to know the regulars before you start recommending things. I think for some people that are new to The Cult it's just plain overwhelming and they don't know where to start. For some who aren't on it everyday like we are...well...it can be damn hard to know where to jump in.
Nate is definitely a ball breaker...some people can take it and some can't. It can draw a lot of haters. I really couldn't imagine the forum without him, though.

I don't think you have to have any kind of tenure or whatever before recommending something. There's nothing at all wrong with putting out a recommendation for your first post.
Thing is, this wasn't much of a recommendation. it's just a "this book was pretty good, you should buy it."
There's nothing there. Mentos commercials have more impact than that.
If you're gonna recommend something, you gotta have some recommend behind it, ya know?
alright.
so, i did a little research and found out that the publisher is in fact NOT a vanity press. and as a friendly fyi, just because a person reads a gay lit book and goes so far as to recommend it doesn't mean they're gay.
anyhow, i know i don't post much but i figured most cultists are avid readers and would like a lead on a book even if the author is completely unknown. i guess i could have expounded on the book but i didn't, so sorry if that put anyone off.
what book ?

usually, these stories end with you being j warren. But good luck anyways.
