horrifying things you have heard said by people about english/reading/writing in an academic setting

probably the most horrifying thing i heard was:
Chuck, i hated this story because i actually had to read it.
now, i heard this in response to a submission in a 200 level class where only two other submissions merited being above the 100 level (if that)
