Haircut Thread:
you're kinda making me want to cut my hair off too, but I dunno. maybe in summer
woah holy shit, awesome!
I can't participate in this thread because I am dead set on having the longest hair I can. I do ombre it though, but that's not a hair cut.
“if you want to be a bird,” you said once, “with colorful plumage and buoyant trills, you must also be ready for hollow bones."

Looks great on you!
I have a question that I think only you gals can answer. What is up with the... I don't even know what to call it...the almost changing of religion/life altering decision that comes with cutting off your hair when it gets into that superlong range?
Even with the few people I've known that did it in my offline activities, there's like this whole soul-searching build-up to whether to do it or not, and then afterwards, there's this trepidation like they're walking around in the nude as each person sees them for the first time with short hair.
I mean, if people were like Barbie dolls and when they cut it, that was going to have to be the look they went with for the rest of their lives, I could understand. But it does grow back.
I don't mean to make light of it; I really would like to understand it though.
Also, what do you do with all that hair once you cut it? Do you give it to one of those Locks of Love places? I know they need 12-13" or they won't be able to use it.
Hair contributes immensely to your appearance and often it reflects (a part of) who you are. Going from really long to short hair is a major change, and yes it grows back, but it can take years. What if you get your hair cut short and you hate it? You can't stick it back on. In that sense there's no going back.

There's also that preconceived idea that women with longer hair are seen as 'luscious', 'sexy' etc while medium- and short-haired girls seem classier and more polished. When I cut my hair from waist-long to just below the ears back in 2007, one of my classmates said "Great, now you look like an escort, not a common street whore."
It's a major change, and also a way of coping with a break-up or depression. Not implying anything, Chenoa, just speaking from my experience and that of all the girls in my immediate circle of friends.
That's interesting. I've just gone through this "rebirth" sort of thing, and got my haircut... pretty short. Feel like a new man. Not the same person staring at me from the mirror, you know? But I hope it grows out enough for spring break.

Definitely. Plus, long hair is easier to hide behind than short hair. It takes a certain amount of confidence for a girl to cut her hair short when she's used to having that security barrier - short hair draws a lot more attention to your face and features, and that can be an intimidating concept for some. It can be hard to visualise yourself with short hair if you're used to having long hair, so it's hard to know what it's going to come out like, hence the agonising over whether to cut it at all. As Irina said, there's also the societal concept that seems to associate long hair with beauty and desirability - which I think is partly due to the fact that short hair is more often associated with older women, long hair with younger women. Personally I think that part of it is a load of bull.
I totally agree. There are lots of short-haired girls who look beyond hot, and some who look plain and boring with the longest hair.

All of this.
When I did the mohawk my brother and my cousin (male) both asked me why I cut all my hair off and said they preferred the long hair. It's just considered more "feminine" to have that long hair. I tend to think I look very boyish with short hair, so it's not completely out there to think that way. I actually looked in the mirror after cutting if and thought, "I feel like I need to wear more make-up now."
I can't explain exactly why I felt the need to change. But yes, it was centered around my break-up, but that's because I was only keeping my hair long because I knew he liked it. To be able to let that go finally felt like I could let him go. And oddly enough, I feel more energetic and invigorated (part of that though, is probably because I finally got a car and am able to get out more).
I've always wondered about it myself, because my friend who killed himself had long beautiful hair and shaved it all off the day before he shot himself. I kept wondering if that was his way of taking control of anything he could, because his relationship was completely screwed and there was nothing he could do to take control of the situation (his wife (my best friend of 7 years) had cheated on him and was leaving him). I think I understand now.
It's become a part of who we are. How could it not be a very dramatic thing?
I'm donating my hair to Locks of Love. Minimum length required is 10 inches. This is my second time donating.

Exactly what I felt. Boring. And I definitely feel more outgoing when I have short hair. It's so strange.

I have regular nightmares of having my hair cut, but that's because it's taken half my life to get to the length I want it. I can't imagine going short again. I just couldn't do it.
Sounds like you made exactly the right choice then, Chenoa
This talk all reminds me of a line from a show called The Mrs. Bradley Mysteries with Diana Rigg:
"Same old coiffure - husband secure; new style of hair - husband beware."
This is the story of my past few years. My hair was growing when I first met him (a few months after the below-the-ears haircut) and he always told me not to cut it ever again. Since then I have only trimmed it a few times, but insisted that I'd have long mermaidy hair, hopefully waist-long again. Last autumn I took off 6 or 7 inches and it was the most drastic I'd go. I still can't go for a shorter haircut because I'm still not over him. I'm not sure which suits me best though.

QFT again!
I'm really set on mermaid hair because my mom always cut my hair short when I was a kid. my sister got to have the long hair. so when I finally could have my hair the way I wanted, I wanted it to be loooong.
my hair grows pretty slow and it's taken so long for it to grow this long. I only get my ends trimmed. I want it to be like 4 longer.
also, I don't think my face works with short hair. power to women who can do pixie cuts, though.

Hahaha same here. She never let me have long hair and always gave me a really lame fringe, which looked bad on me because I was always parting it in the middle. I was a silly-looking kid.
Also, Z, for instance, looks so much better with short hair.

Thanks to all for the replies.
So it would seem it is a sort of sense of being nude/exposed. That one's hair is such a part of their personality, that when it's gone through such a tramatic change, they may feel, for a while, that they don't know who they are as a person even?
The whole long/short=sexy/sophisticated thing I can see why people think that in a big vaguely general sense. But, like most everything, when you're using it for just one or a couple people it's insane! It completely depends on the person head-shape or deportment.
For guys it gets even stranger to me. You'd think a guy with long hair would be seen more as being feminine, but instead it's supposed to lean towards rebelliousness. Which is strange, because in my experience, that myth is totally justified. I completely agree with that "new man" mentality, but it's like whenever I've had long hair and gotten it cut short, I just "feel" like I behave less like an asshole.

I think that's one of my problems on this, is that I always picture peoples hair growing at the same rate that mine does. But, yeah, thinking about it, it could take someone a couple Summer Olympics before they'd be able to get back that length!

Also, Z. Great example! Although she always struck me as one of genetically gifted folks that could have any length of hair and it'd work. Even bald!
yes, z could shave her head and wear a burlap sack and look hot.

James had really long hair, a mohawk actually, but that he never spiked just let it fall, for the first five six years I knew him. If he did cut it shorter it was sill longish, past the ears. It wasn't until we were married that he chopped it all off. Shaved his head even. No, I guess he did cut it off once before we were married, but then grew it right back out. I've talked him into growing it out long twice since we have been married, and a couple times he grew it somewhat longish, but he always gets in a mood out of nowhere and hacks it all off.
I think it is a wanting to look and feel like a professional grownup, and not look like a woman at all. I had something else to say about this but I forgot because the kids interrupted me. Maybe I will remember later.

Well I'm not a chick but I do know your hair is part of your identity, your personality. A long time ago I had really long hair. Really long. It was basically shaved on the sides and back and super long up top. You know a typical stoner/metal head cut. I had girls always tell me I would look better with shorter hair but it just made me not like them. Then one day I was walking home late at night, a car pulls up on me out of the blue and the window rolls down. Inside was an almost skeletal like figure of what looked like the remnants of a woman. As the window slowly and manually was rolled down a boney claw like appendage crept towards me and then a pale moon like face seemed out of the opening. As I looked the appendage was now a hand holding a few $20's. Then this creaky voice called out... Can you get me some crack? I glared and said no go away crack heads, then the car quickly pulled off. When I got home I immediately took out the clippers. But I did keep my hair... for years. Even now it may be packed away in some corner of some box... waiting.

I've always wished I had the guts to have a mohawk. My sister did when she was younger. Mohawk and Bihawk and Trihawk. she went through all of them and more. Never me though.
