goodreads.com new years challenge
wherein you select a number of books you aim to read this year, and shamelessly promote them on good reads... as i said on my facebook, the average member of the american "reading public" reads four books (or less) annually. those are primarily found on impulse racks at supermarkets emblazoned with names like JD Robb, and everyone's favorite, Dan Brown.
i would like to see anyone who does this double that number and get all their books to do so from independent booksellers, if not also by authors local to you.
lets see how many books the cult can read this year

“...There are so many ways of being despicable it quite makes one's head spin. But the way to be really despicable is to be contemptuous of other people's pain. You ought to have some apprehension that the man you see before you was once even younger than you are now and arrived at his present wretchedness by imperceptible degrees.”
-James Baldwin
seriously.
there's a huge amount of similarly scary stats somewhere, cited by clevenger. i dont know where i saw this, though. it goes something like this
- the bestseller lists are determined by less than 10% of our population
- most of them read four books a year
- something like 70% of the american public want to write a book
- 1 in 4 americans didn't read a single book last year
NOTE these are not entirely accurate. i cant find the post where craig posted the stats im talking about. but i know these are in the ballpark
